I am trying to reply to a private message: I wrote my reply and it is sitting in my outbox. How do I send it? Will it appear in my sentbox when it is read? Or do I have to do something?

It will stay in your OUTBOX until the recipient has actually read it. When the recipient reads it, it will appear in your mail as SENT. Actually pretty handy so we can see whether mail has been opened.
