The Rone Ranger's Daily Check-In

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

The Rone Ranger's Daily Check-In

Post by The_Rone_Ranger » Thu Jan 16, 2014 11:21 pm

Enough! Paleo, Atkins, Pritikin, McDougall, ad infinitum. Everyone claims to have the best way to lose weight, but none of them seem very intuitive.

I heard a great quote once; "Don't look back. That's not the direction you're going." Rather than hashing on what hasn't worked, I'm simply going to go forward from here.

The Plan:
NO-S Diet
Rangering 3 miles per day
Shovelglove 14 minutes per day

And here we go!

It was cold and windy, but I got out there and ranged the neighborhood. 1.5 miles in the AM and 1.5 miles in the PM, Shugged while watching TV.

OK, Rone Ranger, now you get another hi-five from me for your silly signature. You are quite a character, aren't you? Bring some spice to our boards. :)

1/17 and the weekend

Post by The_Rone_Ranger » Mon Jan 20, 2014 6:59 pm

1/17 - SUCCESS

NO-S - SUCCESS
RANGING - SUCCESS
SHUGGING - SUCCESS

That's two days in a row with successes to count. I'm focused on getting a good routine in place, so it's extra important to me to get several successes in the early stages.

And now, for the weekend report:
Saturday, donuts for breakfast (I love those things), put a good dent in the honey-do list, and even took time to walk with my wife. She made a banana cream pie for dessert and I'll tell you what, it was the best dang pie I've had in a while. Why? 'Cuz it was guilt free!
Nothin' Special about Sunday. It turned into a no-s day by default.

I'm serious about the pie. It was amazing. That's significant, coming from me. I'm a pie and ice cream connoisseur. My favorite pie? The round ones. I didn't worry about how many points it was or if I just ate all my carb grams for the next week. I just ate it!

My favorite lesson of this week: Food tastes better without guilt all over it.

Thanks for the responses! I'm sure you'll gain some nuggets of wisdom - or nuggets of some sort - from following this check-in.
Here's one for you, just because:
I don't really see the fun in watching drag racing. Sure, it's funny to watch grown men run down the street in high heels and a dress, but other than that, it's boring.

1/20 SUCCESS

NO-S - SUCCESS
RANGING - SUCCESS
SHUGGING - SUCCESS

Monday was definitely a successful day. We had pizza delivered for lunch, and I ate one plate of pizza and a small salad. Pizza is an easy food to over-indulge on. How easy it is to eat slice after slice until you realize you've really stuffed yourself. I was inwardly proud of the fact that I limited myself to a reasonable portion.

Why is it that when you blow in a dog's face he gets mad at you, but when you take him in a car he sticks his head out the window?

1/21 - SUCCESS

NO-S - SUCCESS
RANGING - SUCCESS
SHUGGING - SUCCESS

Easy day. No real challenges. My wife made an awesome French Onion, Barley, and Mushroom soup. Very good!
