ironchef mostly weekly check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). Morning tea and afternoon tea are definitely just euphemisms - I'm pretty sure no one had an actual cup of tea :) Morning tea really means we discovered another meal between brunch and lunch!

It was really sweet of my workmates actually, to hold me a little going away party. They all brought things they made themselves and they were all careful to make things that were "pregnancy friendly". They are a really nice bunch of guys and I'm going to miss being a part of this office over the next year.

eschano - great to see you back. Yes, it was a huge relief to get a diagnosis and proper treatment for my skin. Apart from the discomfort, it's not much fun when your appearance is inclined to scare the public :)

oolala - morning tea normally would be some kind of light snacky meal, like a coffee with a biscuit, or a small muffin or some fruit. However, the men in my office like to go all out sometimes, so "morning tea" has been known to include cakes, sausage rolls, party pies, sushi. They're all pretty fit guys who do a lot of sports (mainly cycling and running crazy distances), so I guess they can afford it!

Linda - I know, they are such nice guys. I often reflect on what a privilege (and a rarity) it is to have a job I love, with people I like and respect, which pays decently. It's such a gift, and one few people I know enjoy, so I try not to take it for granted.

Had a really good day yesterday. Took my son to the Jungle Gym near us and he went wild - just loved it :) Then had some dear friends drop in unexpectedly in the late afternoon and had a really great catch up after not seeing them since New Year (they work away).

Green for No S, green for walking, green for mindfulness.

Yes, skin conditions can really get to you. My husband has psoriasis that flared up pre-wedding as it got a bit stressful (we're like last minute kind of people) but thankfully it went right down again in Greece.

Just thought I'd pop in your thread and say hello! You have such a calm relationship with food and seems like you do not struggle at all. It seems like there is so much room for "life" when you're not obsessing about your diet. What a great place to be, especially with the new baby coming. I'm hoping for a second child, and how lovely it would be to get this eating thing under control. I was reading back to your earlier posts and saw you had mocha's between meals. Do you still do that? Did the sugar affect you at all (assuming your mocha's are like mine - chocolate syrup, milk and coffee)?

Aww, Sinnie, that is a huge compliment. I don't know if calm is always true, but it is true that I have much less emotional turmoil around food than I did 2 years ago, and even on my more crazy S days there isn't really that horrible sense of chaos / guilt.

I still have the odd mocha between meals (these days it is decaf), especially now when I am at home and my ability to sit down for a meal is sometimes dictated by a toddler :) I make mine by brewing decaf coffee in a plunger, adding a teaspoon of Milo (this is an Australian brand of chocolate-based drink) and then some milk. I've never used the syrup, but it sounds delicious. I also make a lot of roiboos tea (South African naturally decaf tea - my Dad is from SA) and at the moment because I'm 38 weeks I'm drinking a bit of red raspberry leaf tea too. Tasty (and sometimes milky) drinks between meals has always been a must for me to stick with No S.

The only thing I notice about eating sugar (on its own) or eating a very carb heavy meal, like a plate of pasta with not much else, is that I'll be hungrier sooner than if I had a more balanced meal with some protein, fats and fibre from fruits or veg. This isn't the end of the world, but it does make the wait until the next meal less comfortable. I do get light headed at times between meals, but in my case this is because I have low blood pressure, not low blood sugar. In high school and my early 20's I used to faint pretty regularly if I stood up too quickly or forgot to drink enough on a hot day. Even now, while heavily pregnant, it is very low and makes it difficult for me to do things like give blood for tests. It's another reason why it is important for me to have drinks all day, not just at meals.

I really, really appreciate that response Ironchef! I feel almost like a No S newbie these days, but I guess I am starting over in a sense, and it helps immensely to read what other people do to aid in their success. I just love hearing that you at times rely on drinks too, and this Milo sounds good (I looked it up :)). I see you just use a teaspoon, from a calorie perspective that's very low and perhaps something to consider for myself. I wish I could get more into tea, the South African one sounds delish (and is there a better accent out there, I would love listening to your dad talk hehe).
The other thing that really stood out to me was your mention of low blood pressure. I have always had low-ish blood pressure, but not enough to cause me to faint. But I often have that light headed feeling, and never really knew what was up with it, just thought it was blood sugar related. I forgot that every time I take my blood pressure it's the very low end of normal. Interesting!

It's going straight to my catchphrase glossary, thanks! My current weight gain has been caused exactly by the distorted thinking along the lines of: "I had carby breakfast/too little protein, so no wonder I'm binging now... I have a legitimate biological reason to binge". Excuses, excuses. Gonna remember your quote next time.

So true about the carbs. A well balanced meal is so much more sustaining/satisfying!

Btw, thanks for stopping by my thread and giving me encouragement! I love the idea that the scale just had to catch up with me. That image really helped for some reason. And you were right, my weight is back to where it was last week!😊

Sinnie, I'm glad some of my ramble helped - definitely take a look at low blood pressure, it can mimic a surprising number of things that people typically associate with low blood sugar.

Imogen - It's hard because there is so much information out there about food, nutrition and our bodies, it's so easy to get caught up in fact-overload (oh, I'm bloated because X, hungry because Y, need to eat because Z). This is one of the reasons I came to No S, to switch off the thinking / fact finding side of my brain. I used to be a huge reader of food, nutrition, health and weight loss blogs, now I only read here. And I still skip things like menus and daily food lists if I think I might find it triggering.

eschano - thanks for the encouragement. At 38 weeks pregnant it is easy to just fall into feeling cetacean :) Posting here helps me keep positive and supports my intention to keep eating sensibly (as much as possible).

Linda - glad my silly comment helped :) I knew that scale would get back where it was supposed to be in a couple of days and voila!

We've got a big couple of days ahead - a wedding reception on Sat night and then my son's 3rd birthday Sunday. There is going to be cake. So much cake. My aim is to try to be relaxed and happy for the weekend, and not stress too much about cleaning and party prep. I've delegated a bit of the cooking. Even though only 18 people (all close family) are coming to the party, I'm pretty slow off the mark these days...

Thanks Linda! Yes, I feel like the year from 2 to 3 was really the transition from baby to child. We had a fabulous afternoon and Ironbaby loved it. However, he thinks "Happy Birthday" is a greeting for birthday parties, a bit like "Good Morning", so as each person said "Happy Birthday Ironbaby" he responded with "Happy Birthday!" back to them. Another classic:

mr. chef: I just wanted to say a few quick words before we do the cake.
Ironbaby (interjecting): Birthday Cake!
mr. chef: Firstly, welcome everyone and thank you for coming to our party.
Ironbaby: Thank you for coming to my party. Welcome to my cake!

The wedding was hard, hard work. It was a cocktail style reception, so standing all evening and nothing I could eat - everything was either smoked salmon, soft cheese or had sauces like aioli or mayo that I'm not meant to have. One dish came out that had some mini toasts for dipping, so I could eat the mini toasts (not the dips). I really paid for it on Sunday morning when I was up early doing party prep.

I got so sugared up yesterday I'm really keen for an N day today!

Our daughter born 29th May, 11:09am, 3.1kg and 48cm. A beautiful girl born easily and naturally in less than 2 hrs after we arrived at the hospital. Another fantastic experience for us. Home the next day with Ironbaby :)

I am not following No S or anything else for a few weeks until I am recovered and breastfeeding is well established. I won't really be posting, but will follow along now and again. Hope everyone is doing well.

Thanks for the congrats ladies :)

My daughter will be 3 weeks this Friday, and I'm ready to bring a bit of structure back. For one thing, I have developed a cold sore, and I know these are related to being run down and eating too much sugar. Also, I just feel my digestion is better when I follow mostly meal based eating. Plus I worry about all the night snacking and my teeth!

I'm not ready for complete Vanilla No S yet, as I'm still sleep deprived, recovering from labour and establishing breastfeeding, also I am VERY hungry at times. So, for the coming week I'm going to focus on:
1. Not eating at night wake ups. If I'm very hungry, I'll have some milk.
2. Not eating sweets on N days.
3. Only snacking if hungry, not "because I can".

Today so far I've just had breakfast and lunch and I feel better already. Alright, both kids are asleep, so I'm off for a nap!

I've been walking pretty much every day, I'm going to restart recording mileage for my walk to Rivendell next week. Sometime after my 6 week check I'm going to start some body weight strength exercises (just stuff I can do at home).

Well, let's say there was some bribery involved... :) Mostly with a newborn it's just timing, if you manage it while they're sleeping you're fine.

Had a really good Saturday - walked another mile, so my Hobbits have finally made it to Weathertop.

I've decided to go dairy free again for a few weeks to see if this will help Squiggle with her gas. It made such a big improvement to Ironbaby's skin last time, that I think it is worth a shot. If it doesn't help, I'll give it up again after July. It's hard, because as I worked out last time, casein is in EVERYTHING! Anyway, it actually helps me have moderate S days, because most of the stuff I eat too much of has dairy. This Sat I had one slice of nice flourless orange cake with my lunch, and one slice of toast with jam as an afternoon snack. The kind of S day I always enjoy.

Thanks ladies! I'm much better today, got almost 6 hrs last night in 3 stretches, so feeling human.
Yes, dairy free is tricky. Gluten free and lactose free are much more common here.

Thanks eschano. To be honest, the days are so totally jam packed at the moment, that it is kind of a relief only having to worry about making (and cleaning up from) 3 eating events each day.

Hobbit walking - 1.5 miles
strength - green (I actually did this with Ironbaby, he quite enjoys "doing his exercises" and it's pretty cute). Oh wow, my push ups are so pathetic and my chest is so sore after just 2 sessions. Ah well, the only way is up.

Haven't done formal mindfulness yet today, but did go for a semi-solo walk earlier today (just me and the Squiggle asleep in the pram), so I used that time to practice mindful walking. It was sooo nice not to move at the speed of toddler, i.e. incredibly slow or else running. Will try to fit in a little 10 min session once Ironbaby is in bed.

I also managed a little "HomeFree" session today while my husband entertained Ironbaby. I pulled out my non-maternity clothes and sorted them either back into drawers or into a donation bag. I've also picked out a few more maternity pieces to give to my sister. I packed up the first bag of clothes that the Squiggle has grown out of (already!! in 1 month!?). I'll offer them to my sister, otherwise donate. Some of this is gear I've held onto for 3 years since Ironbaby was born, so it is excellent to finally sort it and get it out of our hair. A GREAT feeling.

Yay I'm so impressed how your carving out a little bit of time hear & there to make some headway on your goals but not stressing about it either. I wish I could have your positive attitude.

Picking out my babies outfit was sometimes the highlight of my day during those early stages. Not really but I did enjoy it and was kind of obsessive about sorting & labeling everything by ages. I guess it gave me something to do!

Thanks Linda. Honestly, I feel like I really must focus the bright side lately, otherwise I'd be easily overwhelmed. It also feels like life has reached an incredible pace, where I flit from activity to activity constantly, so not much time to dwell on anything!

Yep, a tiny mango tree that sprouted from the seed of a mango from my cousin's biodynamic fruit plantation up in Canarvon. So hopefully in just 10 short years we'll get our own mangoes :lol:

Mmmmmmm- a passionfruit macaron! I've never had one of those, but I love passionfruit jam. A housemate of mine made some once and it was heavenly... I never can be bothered to make it myself, as there's the little matter of getting all those many seeds out!

Yes, I love passionfruit. I made passionfruit curd last year (what we call passionfruit butter), based on a lemon curd recipe, but I was not diligent enough about getting ALL the seeds out and it was too crunchy.

Thursday - S day (sick)
Friday - green No S.

I'm back to walking at least a mile every day and I'm very pleased. My daughter is 6 weeks now, so from next week I'm starting some more formal exercise to strengthen myself and repair my tummy. All just bodyweight based, and with a view to taking a lot of care not to part my abs (which was an issue last pregnancy). I've also picked up some second hand adjustable dumbbells, so after a few months of strength / recovery work I can start introducing weights. Really looking forward to it - I feel so much better when I feel strong.

Ironbaby is pretty patient about baby stuff, but doesn't really take much interest to be honest.

Thurs ended up red - ate one pumpkin and spice mini muffin from a batch I made for a friend who cancelled at the last minute.walked 2 miles though.

Devastating end to the week. A friend of ours has been under terrible strain all week, as her 24 year old son went missing last Thurs. Yesterday, police found his body in the water at a beach near here. I look at my tiny little kids and I can't even process raising a child for 24 years and then losing them in this horrible way. Just devastated for her and her family.

Thanks eschano. I donated to a charity in his name, but couldn't get to the funeral this morning. I dithered back and forth on going, but it was early morning at the beach, and with a 7 week old and a 3 year old it just wasn't going to work (it is midwinter here).

A mish mash week with some red, some green. Need to tighten up on a few things.

Weight this morning at my MIL's house was 65.7kg (145 lb), which is down 2kg (4 lb) from when I weighed last month (21st June). That's good - just one pound a week is a nice slow pace that shouldn't interfere with milk supply. Plus I've been eating some HEAVY plates, so didn't really expect to lose much at all. My daughter had put on 2kg at her 6 week check, so looks like I am transferring body fat directly from me to her :)

A hard end to the week - small eating slips every day. Did plenty of walking though, and fitted in my strength stuff.

Ironbaby is ill, really ill, with temperature of 40 C (104 F) and a rash. The doctor has reassured us that it isn't measles, chickenpox, rubella, pavo, meningitis (i.e. any of the big hitter "name" diseases), but he is still feeling awful poor kid. This is probably the first time in his life he's been properly sick and we're all finding it hard, especially with a 9 week old baby in the house.

Thanks Cindy and Linda. Poor little Ironbaby, he's been such a trooper, really doesn't complain at all. I knew he was really sick yesterday when he turned down his favourite food (custard). If his temperature isn't down today I'm going to get the after hours doctor to come out and review him.

Luckily Squiggle is being an angel at the moment and sleeping pretty well overnight with minimal wake ups (just feed and back to sleep). I'm just a bit paranoid about her catching whatever Ironbaby has.

2 reds last week, green so far this week. Today will be a challenge as I've made mini muffins for Ironbaby and his cousins who are visiting today, which would be very easy to slip up and snack on. I'm posting here as a challenge to myself to avoid this. I'll come back this evening and record how I did.

I'm on week 4 of my tummy and general strengthening plan. Walking has been hard as our late winter weather has been awful recently.

ETA: Wore a pair of my non-maternity jeans today for the first time. They are a little snug (and they're my loosest pair), but I'm still really pleased.

Thanks Linda. I managed it - gave the last few away last night to the next door neighbours.

Having another horrible week this week, another friend missing at the beach near here, this time a friend I went to University with. She's my age (36) with two small children. I also studied and worked with her husband. There is a beach and ocean search for her, but in this terrible winter weather they don't hold much hope. I just can't imagine those two poor little kids. I don't understand the world sometimes, I really don't.

Thanks Linda. We still don't know how this happened, especially in winter. The police are treating it as a missing person, but say there is no evidence of foul play. To be honest there is a lot of talk about whether this is a suicide, but there is no note. I know she suffered from a lot of anxiety after her kids were born (which I guess is a form of post natal depression), but recently I thought she was fine. We all did. I just can't believe it was a suicide - how could anyone leave their two little children? Her daughter is only two. No matter how bad things were, surely you couldn't leave them.

Anyway, green No S this week. In the midst of these things I have no power over, it's comforting to have one thing that stays routine.

Thanks Kit, I really appreciate being able to vent here, as I'm trying to be as calm and steady as possible in real life for those closest to her who are really suffering.

The police called off the search over the weekend, as it's been a week and the land and sea search are both "complete" unless they get new leads. Speaking to her best friend over the weekend, and seeing the desperate yet hopeful attitude of her family, I dread them finding her body, but I think maybe never knowing would be worse. I feel like stuff like this shouldn't happen in real life, it should only happen in movies where we can turn the lights back on afterwards.

Wed RED - shared a mini-pecan pie with my parents for dessert after dinner together. Definitely a delicious fail though...

Still working through the 12 week strength plan, now on week 5. This is the first week using weights, so I can FINALLY break out the adjustable dumbbells I bought second hand off GumTree. Wow are my legs sore!

Still walking whenever I can. Mindfulness still very patchy. House still, erm, a work in progress.

Red Wed - neighbour brought us her first attempt at home made vanilla slice to try. Very good vanilla pod custard. Otherwise this week has been fine.

Ironbaby yesterday - he climbed into a washing basket full of clean clothes with no pants on. I don't know if this Australian slang will translate for those in other parts of the world, but here goes:
Me: mr chef, please get him out of there.
mr chef: Why?
Me: I really don't want anyone freeballing on my clean washing!
Ironbaby: Like the song, Mummy!
Me: Huh?
Ironbaby: Because I'm freeeee! Free Balling!
