It was a funny thing on Friday night. We had planned for dinner before going to Wolf Trap for the play, but when my manager at work was telling me that you could take a picnic and eat there, I said to her, that maybe we would eat dinner in the restaurant and just order dessert to go and eat there, on the lawn. But even as the words were coming out of my mouth, this little voice was running around in my head, "No sweets, no snacks, no seconds...it's only Friday." No-S is definitely habit-forming!
Monday
Got to work some extra hours today which was nice. Nothing of note on the food scene. Steps for the day will total about 7000. Good day today!

Tuesday
Breakfast: oatmeal with raisins and walnuts; an orange
Lunch: leftover rice/ham/corn/peas dish; apricots
Dinner: lamb chop with Italian-seasoned tomatoes; veggie and potato mix
Exercise: Shovelglove; 12,000 steps
I had this weird dream last night where I was teaching a Shovelglove class to a large group of people. Guess I shouldn't be reading this board just before bedtime. However, it did inspire me to SG this morning before work!

No funny business today. I was especially hungry this morning, so I just had a larger breakfast than usual, which will keep me from starving before lunchtime.

Back today.
Breakfast: 2 eggs; 1 piece of toast with Earth Balance; glass of orange juice
Lunch at work: 1 frankfurter; container of green beans; an orange; some baked whole wheat crackers (Not enough food and I was starved by 3 pm., but I resisted the box of Christmas cookies sitting on the counter behind my register.)
Dinner: pork chop; peas; potatoes with green chiles; 3-bean salad; left a hole in the center of my plate to fit the orange and craisins that were on a separate little plate.

I never got to congratulate you on the birth of your first grandson! We had two new grandchildren born this summer too! My daughter's first (girl) was born in August, and my son's third (boy) was born three weeks later! What joy they all are! The holidays will be very special for your family this year! Best wishes on your return to NoS!

Friday, Day 2 Recommitment
Breakfast: bowl of Cheerios in soymilk
Lunch: burrito and rice at a restaurant. Skipped the chips and salsa.
Dinner: all the fridge leftovers I can fit on one plate.
Back in the beginning of my no-S career, Reinhard liked my smiley rating system, so I think I will do that again, as I work toward rejoining the 21 Club.

Jan, as I recall you are very small. You are using this system to lose 2-10 pounds at most. And, I can't fathom that your weight gain has been more than a few pounds. Anyway, I wanted to say that you are an inspiration to us all. And I admire your discipline and drive.

time and time again I have tried to adopt Dr. Fuhrman's plan (I know you are familiar with him). I know this plan is really healthy. But time and time again I have failed because it is just too strict. And when I get too strict, I binge on junk. Anyway, I have to promise myself that moderation is the way to go for me.

No Sweets: (finally caved and had two chocolates at work)
No Snacks: (I ate the chocolates between lunch and dinner!)
No Seconds: (well, at least I got something right)
Exercise: too many hours on my feet yesterday.
Actually yesterday was a wonderful day, in spite of my slip-ups. After work, my husband and I went to the Kennedy Center for the National Symphony performance of "Messiah." It was magnificent! Two hours of heaven on earth. So, here's a just for that!

Tuesday: Happy New Year everyone!
S Day
Wednesday, Day 20
No Sweets
No Snacks
No Seconds
Ate lunch at Chevy's Fresh Mex. I ordered some side dishes (rice, beans, guacamole, corn cake) and asked for it all on one plate. Came out on four plates! Well, I think it was just about one plate's worth of food. Limited myself to just a few chips.
Exercise chi kung, 10 min. Walked around the mall after lunch.

Well, just as I was really hungry last night, so I woke up hungry this morning. Had a couple of eggs and some leftover fruit salad at 7:00 am. By 8:30, I was really hungry again, so had a bowl of Optimized Oatmeal. Finally! Felt better! The rest of the day went just fine. Don't know why I just couldn't seem to be satisfied, but now I'm okay.

I'm reading an interesting book right now..."The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan. I'm enjoying this one better than the last one I read, which was "The Pleasure Trap."
We have so many choices when it comes to food in the Western World, that I wonder if it's possible to go through life both healthy and without food issues? Food should be satisfying, maintain natural weight, be health-supporting, and foster social interaction. What do we have instead? Unhealthy processed junk foods, and bookstore shelves filled with diet books. Disease, yo-yo weight, and social isolation are the result.
No-S is the sanest program out there, and I hope the book sells a million copies.
(I'm waking up in an interesting mood today!)

Hi Jan,
I hope you're having fun with your grandbaby.
I just wanted to stop over and say how inspirational your blog is. You must have been one of the original No Sers.
Reinhard's book is terrific. I hope it introduces lots and lots of people to this way of eating. And he gets the notoritity and success he deserves.
He needs to go on Oprah!

No-S didn't go so well on the trip.
Between exhaustion, 3 hours' worth of time zones, meals when we could grab them, a tight flight connection schedule, and a massive allergy attack, I ate off-program several times. Oh well, I'm home now, and on-program today, having had enough s-days to last me a good long while.
I hope my No-S book is waiting for me when I get to work tomorrow!

It was so good to be eating N-style today! The past week was just too disorganized as far as meals were concerned.
Breakfast: Optimized Oatmeal; couple of cups of decaf coffee with lowfat soymilk
Lunch: green beans; pears with cinnamon; baked whole wheat crackers; juice pack
Dinner: potato gnocchi in marinara sauce; green peas; broccoli
My No-S book was indeed waiting for me when I got back to work!!! I gobbled part of it up between lunch and dinner.....does that count as a snack???
Wonderful book, everyone should read it!

have you read Michael Pollan's most recent book? In Defense of Food Pretty interesting read, especially the concept of "nutritionism" which I certainly bought into, it can make you crazy! Reinhard talks about this in his book I believe. Absolutely love the book, in fact that is how I found out about No S ------ browsing at Barnes and Noble! How did everybody find out about No S before the book???

Breakfast: optimized oatmeal, which I eat almost every morning with much gusto and not a shred of guilt
Lunch: one perfect plate of potatoes, seven-grain bread with Earth Balance, and green beans
Dinner: one bowl of the best beef stew I've ever had and one very tiny slice of Irish soda bread.
Today is my husband's birthday, and we went to an Irish pub for dinner to celebrate. I kept the day as an N-day, but just had a little S-day treat for dessert. Husband and I shared a very small piece of incredibly wonderful chocolate cake. It was a small slice to begin with and divided in two was just a few delicious bites. We got to do something special together without going all out, and with keeping the rest of the day on-program.

Day off from work. Husband and I ran some errands, which got us quite a good number of steps.
Breakfast: omelet; two pancakes with Earth Balance; small grapefruit juice
Lunch at Macaroni Grill: "build your own pasta bowl". Mine was bow tie pasta, pine nuts, artichokes, and black olives, with marinara sauce. I asked for a take-home box early in the meal, and transferred half of the bowl to the box. Didn't eat the bread and olive oil. Realized that it wouldn't have fit on a plate with the pasta. Hot tea, black, to drink.
Later, we stopped at Starbucks for a decaf coffee with soymilk.
Dinner: veggie Boulangerie, which is potatoes and pink beans seasoned with thyme and baked. Also had steamed green beans.
The end of a great week for eating!

Today I was playing around with Shovelglove moves using a broom instead of the sledgehammer or body bar. I have an old shoulder injury which acts up whenever I use weights. So today I focussed on the abs and lower body movements using the broom and was very pleased with the workout I got. I would mentally target the muscles involved and then consciously contract. No pauses between reps or sets. I also did some of the upper body moves, and enjoyed the full range of motion they provided. I think I'm going to work some of these into a floor aerobics program I do.

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. They mean a lot. I am going through a divorce and it is really difficult. But I am nosing, praying, and trying to cut out excess drinking. The spaghetti factory was good, but not wonderful. About 15 years ago I ate at the Newport Beach Spaghetti Factory in California and it was wonderful. This last outing was the Spaghetti Factory in Riverside, Ca. It was good, but not like homemade. I know I could make it better at home. I might have attended on an off day. Thank you again for your words.

Good eats today.
Breakfast: optimized oatmeal, my default breakfast.
Lunch at work: container of peas; container of pear slices sprinkled with cinnamon; two slices seven grain bread with earth balance
Dinner: red beans and rice; corn; one slice bread (okay, it was balloon bread, yuck, but at least I only had one slice and not two)
Exercise: walked to work and back, 30 min. total; 10 min. aerobics with body bar.
I was pleased to see "The Omnivore's Dilema" quoted in the No-S book. I'm really enjoying reading it.

My husband and I celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary today! I will observe a regular no-s day, but will have a little treat when we go to dinner: there is a piece of "death-by-chocolate" cake with my name on it for dessert. Hubby and I will share it.
Since I know what I'm eating today, I may as well post now as later.
Breakfast: optimized oatmeal; cranberry juice
Lunch: 7-grain bread with earth balance; green beans; mandarin oranges
Dinner: corned beef and cabbage (which, I think, also has potatoes and carrots with it); Irish soda bread; yummy slice of cake.
Exercise: walking to and from work, 30 min. total.

Posting for Wednesday:
My work shedule was different than usual, which messed up my meal schedule, there was a family problem, then I was asked to work late to cover someone who didn't show up (more hours for me, but dinner was delayed by two hours), then there was a crisis after work to deal with, then a lady from the Census Bureau showed up at nine o'clock...what a day.
Breakfast: I tried to eat a little later than usual because I knew lunch was going to be later. So that was okay.
Lunch: the usual stuff I bring to work.
Dinner: much later. Small victory: I was getting really hungry, but I didn't hit the vending machine.
Later, around 10 pm, I really was hungry and didn't want to go to bed like that, so I ate a bagel. Small failure.
I sure hope today is a better day.

Thursday: another late dinner!
Breakfast: default optimized oatmeal; cranberry juice
Lunch: default vegetable, fruit, bread
Dinner: got a chance to work late today, but I was really hungry (because my lunch is at 11 am), so my husband brought me something to eat, which was bread, green beans, and juice. Nearly a meal. Then when I got home, he had dinner laid out on the table: black-eye peas and tomatoes; corn; potatoes. Had a small serving of beans and potatoes. Al together it was probably more than one plate, but it wasn't too awfully bad when I think of all the vending machines in the building that I didn't visit.

Friday: no problems with no-s
Sat. and Sun. Happy S-Days!
I will be here this week, but then will be travelling and computerless more or less for a couple of months. I will try to check in from time to time if I can get a computer at the public library.
My goals while I'm gone:
+ Absolutely strict with vanilla no-s
+ Lots of Urban Rangering, since I'll be in a nice place for walking and won't have a car anyway
+ Will hit the treadmill several times a week

Didn't do very well this week on No-S. No junk food, but some snacks here and there (more here than there!). I think the stress of arranging the move was really getting to me. But now everything is set and all I have to do is get on the plane, so I am relaxing a little.
Repeating to myself my resolution for while I am away:
Vanilla No-S. Urban Rangering, and lots of it. Read a couple of pages of the No-S book every day for continued inspiration.
I'll check in whenever I can get a computer at the library.
Be well. Be happy, everyone!

Here I am back in Minnesota! Everything is going well. I don't have a computer here, but I am able to log on at the public library. Finally...a good use for my tax dollars!
No S has been going really well, with only a couple of slip-ups. I have been sticking to Vanilla No-S, and not worrying about the quantity on my plates. This works well. Stress-free and totally satisfying.
I have really been putting the steps on my step counter the past couple of weeks, averaging between 10,000 and 16,000 a day (no car). Sometimes it's Urban Rangering, exploring my new hometown, and sometimes it's on the treadmill. The nice thing about the treadmill, is that there is a tv in the fitness room that gets cable. I don't have cable in the apartment because I will only be here a couple of months and then will return to Wash DC until August.
Reinhard, you should feel flattered....your No-S book was one of only four books that I brought with me.
Hope everyone is doing well here. This is my first time checking the board since the Women's World article came out, and we have so many new people. How wonderful!!!
Well, I see the clock is ticking away on this computer so I had better stop typing now.
Take care, everybody, and a big happy welcome to all the new folks!

Thanks, Blondie!
I finally found a copy of Women's World! Good article, although I wish they hadn't put that stuff about the diet soda at the bottom. Not forbidden, but not recommended...maybe confusing for beginners? Anyway, I was please with the two-page spread. Between the book and the magazine, there are so many new people on the board!
Vanilla No-S...still some slip-ups occasionally, but not much.
Urban Rangering...very nasty winter storm hit here and grounded me, so I have mostly been doing treadmill for the last couple of days. Too much ice on the sidewalks and a very cold wind blowing, so I don't want to be outside walking. Just getting to the busstop to come downtown to the library was a challenge.
Anyway, hope everyone is happy here. Today's an S day...how cool is that?!!!
See y'all on Monday!

I'm just amazed at how many new people we've picked up here! Hope everyone is doing well! You're in my daily prayers, Joanna.
Report since my last check in:
Vanilla No-S: splendid!
Urban Rangering: averaging about 14,000 steps each day. Discovered some new walking paths by the historical museum, which, conveniently enough, is right across from where I live.
Still reading a piece of the No-S book each day for support. It's a big help since I am away from this board so much right now.
Today is an S-Day!!! Gotta find something special!
See you folks next week! Be well!

hello
Hi Jan,
I am impressed that you have been doing this for so long. I do believe it is something I can stick to. May I ask in the amount of time you have done this how much weight have you lost? I am on day 19 and love this way of eating.

Dear Jamie, My goal is to maintain my good weight, and I am doing that on No-S. Losing is one thing, but maintaining is for a whole lifetime. Not sure I could do that on my own or on another program.
Tuesday check-in:
Made a great dinner last night: spaghetti and veggie "meatballs", green beans, with rice pudding for dessert. The pudding had no sugar in it at all (nor any fake sugar substitute), and was really good.
Continuing to walk. The No-S book sits next to my bedside and I have been reading a little piece each day.
See y'all on Thursday.

Thanks Jan,
I am not to my healthy weight but intend to get there free of obssesing as I have done for years. I need to loose about 30 and like some on the site I may have gained. I refuse to step on a scale because that too is one of my crazy obbsessoing that can send me off in tears. So my hubby hid them for me and that is just fine with me. However I have had to pull out my size 14 because my 12's are too tight. Not with all my pants but some so I do feel as if I may be heavier. I am on day 22 today and yesterday decided to make more healthy choices with my meals and continue to exercise. I am not giving up and I encourage my friends out there with the same struggle to keep going. We all want the fast results but what always happens more than not is we fail and can't maintain.
Thanks for the advice Jan. It is nice to hear from a noser with some years under her belt.

Not much to report. Food is pretty much on track, with not much variation even on S-Days. Walking like crazy; yesterday I had 18,000 steps on my counter. That's about 9 miles! I don't have a scale where I am right now, and don't miss it. When I get back to Washington in another month, I think I will get rid of the one we have there. "Don't buy what you don't need; don't keep what you don't use" has long been one of my mottos.
Besides walking, I have been amusing myself by watching all 86 episodes of the old "Danger Man/Secret Agent" series, along with "The Prisoner." I've been a Prisoner fan in a big way since the late '60's. I was 16 years old when I first saw it; about 30 when I saw it next, and 57 now. Like all literature and art, it has grown and deepened as I age. Not that this has anything to do with No-S, but it's where my head is at right now, while I am sitting here in the library typing this post.
Take care, all. Be seeing you!

I am finally back home in Minnesota for good, and it is so good to be here! Washington DC was fun for two years, but this is home.
We are enjoying having our grown children nearby and having a good time babysitting our 1-year old grandson.
I have been on and off with No-S over the past few months. Mostly on, but too many slip-ups. Time to re-commit...again! This is a good time, since we are mostly settled and life has gone back to comfortable routines.
Hope everyone is doing well!

The main thing that sidetracks me when I am trying to do No-S faithfully is a variable work schedule. One day I'm home, eating three meals on time. The next day I'm working through lunch or dinner, after that maybe I'm around for the meals but one or more is an hour or two late. It's hard to form a habit when the schedule changes every day!
I've been No-S-ing for 3.5 years now and every single time I've gone off-program, it's been for this reason. I've never really found a solution to this.

Welcome back, Jan!
The work schedule issue is tricky...
I can't speak from personal experience because I've got a pretty regular 9-5ish schedule, so I'm not sure how useful this will be, but here goes:
How far in advance do you know your schedule? Is it regular from week o week? Even if it varies from day to day, maybe you can map out a weeks worth of meals in advance -- and if it's necessary on some days, add a fourth mini meal. Better to plan exceptions than have them imposed on you.
Best of luck getting this sorted out one way or the other and great to see you here again in any case,
Reinhard

I think what I will try to do is to permit myself a bowl of oatmeal (my "default" food) on those evenings when I work late and come home hungry. I agree with you that it is easier to plan an exception rather than having it imposed on me by someone else.
As always, your level-headed wisdom is much appreciated!

Today is my first day on my new job...bookstore, naturally! I'm really nervous!
I ate a bigger than usual breakfast because I don't know what the lunch schedule is, and packed my usual lunch to take with me. Dinner will be on time, so I think I'm set for the day.
Did I mention that I'm a nervous wreck this morning?????
