some frutrations and concerns

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

some frutrations and concerns

Post by Jane80302 » Tue Jan 27, 2009 9:12 pm

OK, this may sound lame to some people, but we only get about two snow days a year around here, and a surprise day off is just too fun not to celebrate. So, snow days are S days as far as I'm concerned, although I will rethink that if we ever get more than a couple of them.

I think I am doing OK at No S, but I am pretty worried about weekends. Claiming an S day like today doesn't seem as much of a problem--I just allow myself a sweet and that's that. But on weekends, it seems I just go a bit crazy. Maybe its the psychology of disciplining myself by saying "not till Saturday" that kind of makes me go crazy on Saturday. Or maybe its the two "no rules" days in a row that causes the problems. I don't know.

I am also concerned about N days because, although I do not break the rules as written, I don't always make the healthiest choices. I know I should be eating more vegetables and less fat with every meal and that I sometimes overload my plate. Any advice? Do I just keep doing what I am doing and see what happens?

I haven't weighed because I am waiting for Feb 1 to weigh, but I am afraid I am not losing. Of course all of this discouragement may stem from the fact that an injury has kept me from my workouts for a couple of weeks now. Sigh. It's hard to stay upbeat when I am sedentary, and my darned achilles throbs so badly it keeps me off my feet.

So that's where I am today.

Not to worry. Reinhard has a podcast (but there is a transcript if you just want to read it) on S Days Gone Wild...

...but it is perfectly natural and typical. Eventually your desire to over compensate will wear itself out and you'll start being more moderate on S days. At least that is the idea.
