Well, this is my second time around trying the No S Diet, and as of yesterday I completed 21 days of success on the program, and I have lost five pounds. This program works, and I am recommending it to my friends. Best regards, Bob

Welcome to the club, Bob! Glad you decided to give no-s another go and managed to hit some good temporal and corporal numbers.

Looking forward too seeing you here again,

I finally hit 21 days.

One year and 13 days after my first post here...

It really has been relatively painless this time. In my case I know all the troubles were a lack of discipline. Failures were the result of eating, not from hunger, but habit. Concentrating on the development of discipline helped me struggle through. I've lost a few pounds. I never had so many to lose though. I rarely weight myself even. I just use the "look in the mirror" system. So while there is some level of success there I feel greater gains in the area of self control. Where to go from here? Well I do want to make a few tweaks in my personal routine. Psycho-Cybernetics suggests 21 days to build a habit. While I feel this was a good start I can't say I'd never go back to eating carelessly or that the urges do not pop up. So I'd like to extend my period to now go for the Dr. Weil advocated 8 weeks to habit forming. Using the 21 day milestone as proof I can succeed I want to go another 5 weeks.

Past that I'm going to try to stick to 3 meals on S-days. Just include forbidden things as the mood strikes.

Thanks to everyone for feedback and encouragement. Here has a nice feel of being helpful without being a melodramatic cheering section or helping rationalize away lack of effort.

I have lost 5-6 lbs in 5 weeks of No S Diet and 5 1/2 weeks of Shovelglove. I was already Urban Ranging and I have been walking even more the past 5 weeks.

Hi,

As of today, I'm in (well, okay, I did it before but I didn't post it). In three weeks I lost three pounds, which might not seem very impressive. On the other hand, I've been exercising regularly and I tend to put muscle on pretty easily.

17 more pounds to go. Actually, I'm going to measure my progress more according to my measurements and bodyfat percentage. After all, if I weighed the same but all the fat had been replaced with muscle...Well, that wouldn't be bad either. (Ok, maybe I'd be a little scary. Grrrr.)

Welcome, hexagon! A pound a week is just fine. And behavior is the key thing. Get the behavior down, and the results will come -- and stay.

21 days today! It really does seem like I am actually changing the way I eat and live. Pretty amazing.

2 pounds weight loss, 1% body fat loss, and about 1 inch gone.

On to another 21 days and an even stronger, thinner, healthier me!

Great attitude, want2bhealthy. Keep at it. You'll be amazed how easy it becomes once you get these habits in place. Getting them there is hard, though, so don't let your guard down.

The third time was the charm!

I failed a couple of times (the last on day 20, agh!), but the third time was the charm! I am now a member of the 21-Day Club. It feels good up here!

I have to admit that when I started this back in mid-January I was deeply skeptical. Since then:
  • my portion sizes have decreased dramatically
I've learned that I can't actually starve to death in five or even eight hours
I've baked bread and waited overnight before having a slice
I've kept the same block of cheese in my refrigerator for more than a week
...and what is most amazing to me, I've forgotten all about afternoon snacking
Oh, and as of this morning I'm down five pounds. It's not a lot, but it feels more sustainable than other weight-loss processes I've been through. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I feel a lot thinner and fitter. I feel generally better throughout the day, too, not having to carry all that food around and digest it. I'm cooking for myself a lot more, and the fruits and vegetables I'm eating to keep me full from meal to meal are doing great things for my skin.

It will be a relief not to have to write down everything I eat from now on, although I hope that I'll still be able to make nutritious food choices without the daily check-in to keep me honest. I'll try to check in once a week, let's say every Friday, and whenever I fail. But from now on, success will be my default, baby!

Welcome to the club and congratulations! Not just on hitting the goal, but on building a strong habit as you've clearly done.

It's natural to be skeptical at first. I was too and I invented the thing! It's an amazing, almost embarrassing what an outsized effect these simple little rules can have. Such a big, tragic problem... such a little, almost comic solution.

HOOORAAAY!!

As of yesterday, we made it again!

Just wanted to post our second (for me) and third (for Tiffani-shamrockmommy!) set of 21 Days on Habit!!

Wow I can't believe we have come so far!! I feel so good! I am really amazed that it is becoming so much easier, just like you said it would, Reinhard! I have to admit, I didn't believe you on that part  but you were right-it's really feeling like a habit and much less effort is required. I think your advice about being ridiculously strict is perfect-that's what I think helped get me through.

Well, that, and my No-S buddy, Tiffani! I know I wouldn't have made it this far without you!! Thanks sweetie!

Thanks again Reinhard, for such a great system-and all the time and effort you put in making it available to all of us!! You're the best 8)

I am really amazed that it is becoming so much easier, just like you said it would, Reinhard! I have to admit, I didn't believe you on that part
I wouldn't have believed it myself either, starting out :-). Yes, it makes sense, but appetite seems so beyond making sense that it's hard to imagine while you're still its thrall.

I'm in as of Monday 4/9/07.
Bodyweight @ start-190 (kinda dehydrated-usually heavier)
24 days in-183.5 (a tad bloated from having the flu earlier this week, too).
I've noticed that my bodyweight can fluctuate usually about 4 pounds in a couple of days, even during the week. I've head this attributed to carrying more muscle than average, which I suppose I do. Who knows, maybe it's just bloating from eating something that doesn't agree? Gross.

Nice! Congratulations, Storm.

I can easily vary 4 pounds in a single day, according to my scale.

In fact, I've jumped as much as 10.

That's why I stick with days on habit as my primary metric (though scale weight is a good rough sanity check now and then).

I completed my first 21 days successfully yesterday. I lost 8.5 lbs during that time. Mostly I appreciate the boundaries of not being able to snack during the week. It has kept me from turning to food during the day because I feel stressed or get bored or am trying to procrastinate doing something. It is starting to help with my obsession with food. Thanks for this site and this board, its great! :D

Congratulations Jan and Charis! It is funny how comforting firm but generous boundaries can be. When people hear the word "boundaries" they get claustrophobic, but boundaries can be quite cozy if you give yourself enough room to move around a bit.

I finished my 2nd consecutive 21 days. I only lost 1 to 1 1/2 pounds this time so the next time through I am going to try to work on tightening a few areas, but overall I am pleased with the way the habits are forming and most days it is getting to be a little easier. I am going to continue counting the days as well as my my habitcal as I think I still need the accountability to keep going. I know I am not on automatic yet.

Posted: Mon Jul 02, 2007 6:55 pm
by reinhard
Congratulations (again), Charis! I find the habitcal helpful (or at least satisfying) even though I'm pretty much on full automatic for no-s and nearly so for my other habits.

Me, me! I did it! (Only just, though, I nearly cracked and had biscuits (cookies) last night!!) :D

The numbers on the scale have been really up and down, with no obvious reasons, and today I'm only 0.5kg down on my start weight! But never mind, such is life, and I'm sure that if I stick with it, I will eventually manage to get the numbers going down and staying down. If nothing else, it's very empowering to say no to snacks, etc!

I like the habitcal, as it helps me to see that I'm doing well. At least by weighing myself every morning I am aware of what's happening, even if I don't feel that I can do much about it!

Thanks again for all your ideas and your support, Reinhard!

Congratulations!

Glad you're able to take the bouncing scale numbers in stride. No-s can be slow going, but it's good going, so just hang in there, enjoy, and in time I'm sure the scale will fall in line. In the meantime, as you said, there is something satisfying in the consciousness that we're not overeating, that our appetite isn't out of control. We tend to forget that overeating (aka gluttony), even apart from its inevitable results, is a bad, unsatisfying thing. On this front No-s gives you results starting on day one.

Hi! I'm posting here because I've completed just over 21 days on no S (that's assuming that weekends are included!)

I'm actually on day 24 now, but I did have 2 failure days (damn cookies!) plus my first couple of days were "half essed" because I snacked on apples and bananas.

However, I think I've got to that point where the habit is sticking - I didn't even want to have snacks or seconds on my last S days (and those were my biggest issues).

I don't generally crave sweet things so that hasn't been much of an issue, if I ever have sweets it's usually because I find it hard to resist any new food that I haven't tried before (hence my cookie failures!).

I've also found that my appetite is lower and I'm hungry less often. It's been an interesting lesson in how appetite and hunger is very much psychological.

I think I've lost about 0.5 kgs but I'm trying not to obsess about weight - it's more about correcting years of bad habits at the moment.

So far so good :)

Congratulations, Bonnie! And welcome to the club.

I'm very happy to hear that you feel you're really building habit. Keep up the strictness and I think you'll soon find it gets very easy. Of all the everyday systems I practice, No-s gets the easiest and most automatic once you get that habit down. In the almost 6 months I've been keeping track on the habitcal, I've had a handful of failures on other systems, but none on no-s:

Made it - after sixty-something days of trying, I finally hit my 21 days without a fail on Friday!

It feels good, and it's definitely getting much easier. My wife reminded me this evening that when I'd just started I used to complain about how hungry I was at around 11pm each day. That's now passed, thankfully.

S-days are still not as restrained as they probably should be, but they are definitely no worse than EVERY day used to be, so that's got to be an improvement.

I don't know yet if I've lost any weight as I haven't weighed myself since I started. I weighed 200 pounds the day before I started NoS; my very-long-term target is to get below 168 pounds. I weigh in on Friday (first day of Winter) so I'm hoping to see at least some progress. (Unfortunately Thursday evening is my work's Christmas dinner so Friday isn't the best day for a weigh-in, but that's the rule I set myself and I'm sticking to it! :))

Even if I haven't lost much, I know that my new sensible eating habits will get me there, eventually.

Thanks everyone for all your support and advice.

Habit is a powerful thing. In a way, this is sort of obvious. But we're so used to habit working against us that it seems like a miracle when it's actually on our side.

Count me in! This is Day 22. I am really happy with everything about this diet, and how "normal" I feel. I have lost about 3.5 lbs so far, but more importantly, I have eaten so reasonably these past three weeks, and have actually enjoyed being on this diet. I feel that this is the start of a new chapter in my life, in which I make peace with food after many years of battling.

My heartfelt thanks to Reinhard for sharing his innovative and effective systems!

Welcome, franxious! You are very, very welcome. It's funny how striking and important that feeling of normalcy can seem. Before you start no-s, you might think, "yeah right, whatever, I just want to be skinnier." Then after a few weeks "on habit," it's like an epiphany -- eating is pleasurable again, all that disgust, all that anxiety that was inextricably linked with food is gone. You find this great good that you maybe never even knew existed. It's almost like discovering a new sense. And of course, you wind up skinnier, too.

My very first successful 21 days!! I weighed myself this morning for a total of 5lbs lost in 21 days (including s-days)

According to the board records, I made this account 03 Jun 2005. I've fell off the wagon again and again, I've wandered away to those other quick fix diets and came back again, heavier and more unhappy with myself.

This round just clicked and felt right. I didn't feel deprived, I was able to say no to sweets. I was able to deal with hunger in between meals without snacking and able to enjoy my Sdays without binging or guilt.

I started at 248lbs and have about 90-100 more lbs to lose to be considered a normal weight for my height/sex.

I am going to add shovelglove (or at least the 14 min a day workout mentality) into the mix, and continue Urban Rangering on my lunches.

The last time I was a "normal" weight I was 15. I didn't break the +200lb mark till after High School. I've been overweight and unhappy with my body for over 10 years now. Even with this slow weightloss (not to mention a healthy and stress free way of eating!) I'll still be able to reclaim my body from my gluttunous, slothfull self in under a fourth of the time it took to get to this point.

It no longer feels like an insurmountable challenge. It feels like a realistic goal with a finishline that I can cross without making myself and everyone around me miseable in the process.

Thank you so much Reinhard, for putting your success out there for the world to share and learn from. I look forward to being a NoS lifer.

P.S. I've preordered several books to share with friends, family and coworkers.

WELCOME, Murphysraven! This is great news and I'm hugely impressed by your perseverance. It's funny how it can suddenly just click. I wish there was some kind of formula for when that happens -- there seems to be a huge variation, but it's striking when it does.

I'm so sorry it's taken me a full week to process your announcement.

Thanks also for the pre-orders! The few people who've gotten their hands on advance copies genuinely seem to like it, so I hope you won't be disappointed.

Hi Reinhard, my current weight is 168lbs and I would like to get to about 140 -148lbs. I will try not to be discouraged if the loss slows down to half a pound a week, as long as it just goes down. I am trying not to weigh myself all the time, just every 21 days, I will record any losses or gains on this thread.

Kindest regards Daisy

i happened to be browsing at Barnes and Noble and stumbles upon the No S diet. very intriguing. I am psyched to start as I have tried every diet you can think of, but have never been able to keep any weight off. And i just can't psyche myself into going on yet another diet. So I thrilled to find this book, as it seems reasonable and most importantly DOABLE for the long haul. I hope to be able to get 21 days under my belt!

Please can I join the 21 Club, say 'Yes' or I'll burst! I'm soooooooooo proud of myself for making it this far. The first week or so I felt really ill and struggled through severe cravings. The third week I spent 4 days in hospital after falling and damaging my wrist badly. So now I'm one-handed for 6 weeks.

It has helped to allow myself just one treat, usually a supper-snack, on N days, that way I still feel successful.

Daisy, looking forward to having you as a "regular customer" here in the 21 day club :-)

Welcome, swimfit! Your reservation has been taken.

Jean, if I understand you correctly, you made it to your thried week and then were hospitalized. You DO know that "sick" starts with "s," right? And when there's an actual hospital involved -- sheesh, if it's good enough for your insurance company, it's certainly good enough for me. Welcome! (And I hope you're feeling better).

Completed 21 days yesterday. Only lost two pounds (9 more to go to first goal), but bingeing is a thing of the past and so are cravings. I am saying no to my enablers for the first time in my life.

REINHARD, YOU ARE THE BEST!

:D

I just realised that on Friday the 18th April I reached my first (for a long time) 21 days - and I feel fantastic for it. I look forward to many many more.

Thanks once again to Reinhard.

Welcome, Jamie, fkawn, and MerryKat!

I don't know what makes me happier -- to see new people getting it, or to see an old timer who's has to tough out some pretty rough spots work themselves into fighting trim again. It's pretty close!

I will be at 21 days on Sunday. I have not slipped up once on N days and have even found that on S days I still follow the 3 meals with a couple treats following meals. My sweet tooth has decreased so much it's almost scary.

I am totally amazed at how easily this happened for me because I was a big snacker--years of being enticed by the "6 meal" mentality. And years of eating sweets, because I "deserved" it. I feel so free right now, it's great. I have not stepped on the scale (and I had a twice per day habit of this for many years). I don't even care what I weigh, I just care that I feel good, I feel in control, and I love eating when I eat. Something I have missed since 1989 (I actually remember when I became a food freak--). I love this lifestyle and Reinhard's book so much (and more so, the fact that it was all free on the internet if you didn't want to buy the book).

Anyway, I hope to be back after my 2nd 21 days are up. Thanks Reinhard for giving me permission to eat one plate of any food I want, 3 times per day, so I can enjoy food and life in general again (okay a little melodramatic, but quite true, I must admit). You are my hero. :!:

TODAY is day 21 for me.
This has been a God send.
I only had one failure...on Friday- I had desert. It was really good too!
My S days have not been a struggle either. But enjoyable.

However, I do like the structure of my N days and am ready to get 'back to it' on Monday.
:D

Yeah! 21 days. My next goal is the month of may - to do it perfectly. My s days weren't too good - I was pretty idiotic - but I guess that's what s days are for, because I lost 3.5 pounds. I'm looking forward to the week end, in order to do better than the last three. Give me some support.

Wohoo!

I made 21 days on Tuesday. Couldn't be more proud. I also can't believe that I've made this drastic a change in my eating without feeling deprived, or that it was any huge effort. Always knew that snacking was my problem, but it never occurred to me to just quit! It solves so many problems so simply. Had three extra s days, but one was a sick day, and the other two were just small s days for my nieces birthdays. April is kinda crazy in our family with my husband and my anniversary, my in-laws anniversary, my husband's, mil's, sil's and two nieces birthdays. And they all live within a stone's throw, so can't really avoid them. :) At least I didn't start this until half of them were over, so I didn't have too many extra s days.

Anyway, can't say thanks enough to Reinhard for this new lifestyle. I hadn't lasted this long on a diet since I've been married. Never could keep up with cooking different meals for me, and hubby has never been willing to eat diet crap.

So thanks again, Reinhard. You are a godsend.

Have a great day!

Yesterday was my 21st day!! YAY for me!! My next goals are to continue developing my No Scale Habit and to start watching portions...being more aware to see if there are excesses there.

I have 21 days too! It flew by! I debated with myself about joining today, because I had a few extra s days thrown in there due to the vacation my daughter and I went on, but even on those s-days I was conscious and reasonable around the food. There has not been one binge (or even thoughts of having one), just amazement at the freedom I am feeling. Guilt, shame, and resentment were my daily companions until I found this plan. I love it here!

Wow, got my 21 days all (all green and yellow) finished on monday and what do I do today on day 22...cave....had a brownie with small amount of vanilla ice cream for dessert tonight...darn just really wanted it. I have enjoyed the freedom of this eating plan and although did not lose any weight (still eating too many calories) my plan this week was to make smarter choices. Started out well at 6:00 oatmeal/flax mix with dash of soy cream. Cup of garlic veggie soup at 10:00 (I allow this every N day at work as it is sooo healthy and homemade every day. Then blew it at lunch grabbed a hamburger from deli...and manwiches for dinner with onion cheese and dill pickles then dessert!. So much for my healthy choices. I didn't even get my apple eaten today. I try to eat an apple as part of my dinner. It wards of the hunger while I am cooking. I'm usually very hungry by dinner and evenings can be brutal but I made it thru 21 days...It has been a tough week emotionally and I'm also working real long hours....I just find it harder to stay committed when I'm not feeling my best. I will keep it up though and tomorrow have a green day!. Rex

I'm in!!! 21 days today!

I have had 3 Failed days which when I think about it weren't really that bad, 2 days in a row for having 1 cookie each day and then yesterday for eating two extra pieces of garlic bread after I finished my dinner. All in all I am pretty proud of myself.

Best news of all, we weighed at work today and I lost another 3.6 lbs!! Yipee!!! Guess I need to update my signature, that makes almost 6 lbs total since starting No S.
