Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

tacodiscos first s journey

Post by tacodiscos » Wed Jul 22, 2015 1:42 pm

My first day, yesterday, was SUCCESS- riding home from vacation. Although I used some artificial sweetener in my coffee and had a diet coke, I'd say it's awesome to have a long day of travel and eat 3 meals instead of 3 meals plus 500 snacks in the car. :D

Breakfast- 4 cheese and salami sticks, Lunch- salad from Perkins, dinner- salad.

Hi tacodiscos, and welcome!
I noticed you mentioned elsewhere that you were in OA. I was following the OA "GreySheet" for some months before NoS. It just wasn't sustainable for me. I'm much happier on NoS.

I don't even remember a sheet but I tried 3 meals with no snacks and it worked.... so I know there's something to it... but I'd fall off our forget.... as weird as that sounds. I think I really do need this habit to form.... and I really love the supportive community here!! So thank you!!

Day 2 - SUCCESS.... really wanted to eat some macadamia nuts... then realized those didn't fit into what I was eating at my meals and skipped them. They're usually my downfall.

Anyway, ate breakfast (2 eggs, cheese, a zucchini, onion, sausage scramble) about 8 and was hungry at 11. Had lunch (salad).... and I was worried about the early lunch... but I wasn't hungry again until 5 (salad). I usually oversnack/binge in the evenings... to stop it, I usually go to bed. But 6 is too early... so instead I doodle for an hour or so and browsed the internet and it worked!! :D

Did have 3 coffees w/cream, too.

Keep up the good work!
Also, just an aside - but two salads for lunch and dinner doesn't sound very substantial. If you're happy with that, great, but don't let it be the rule if you don't want it to be. For me I need something solid and good in my stomach, but YMMV. :)

I thought that too, but my salad bowl is pretty big - bigger than my plate, but I allow it bc it's salad - and I put egg, meats, and cheeses in it, too. :) If I don't, I'm starving!! Haha! Right now I have a crop share and a neighbor that gardens so I'm eating it up before it goes bad. But you're right! I have beef for tonight... which I usually make into a taco salad. Can you tell I love salad? Haha!

Thanks, natj. Funny, I went against it today and maybe I shouldn't have... ha!

Day 3 - success

Big salad for breakfast, then for both lunch and then later for dinner, Mac nuts, almond, some cheeses, carrots and lb, some cottage cheese. I am starving the last few hours... although I am sure it can be attributed to my bootcamp-style 1 hour workout... been away for 2 weeks... I am already sore... tomorrow is gonna be worse!!

Going to watch this. If I continue to feel this ravenous on workout days, I'll have to figure something out... although adding in a snack won't be it because I have to break that habit!

Looks like you're doing good! You might want to try adding some carbs? Just a thought. A lot of drink milk or coffee/tea w milk to get us through those tough times between meals. I'm sure you'll find what works for you though!

For sure on carbs!! I think that's what my big salad helped me with and not having it at lunch mass me tired and later too tired to make dinner... then ravenous later. Haha!!

Oh!! And I was gonna have my third coffee of the day at 4, but I didn't. I regret it now, because I laid on the couch all night and never moved. Wonder if I was dehydrated too... live and learn!!

carbs

Post by RAWCOOKIE » Fri Jul 24, 2015 11:03 am

Before discovering the NoS diet, I had been trying to be low-carb on a vegetarian/vegan diet for a while - and had pretty much cut bread out, potatoes right down, no pasta, a smidgen of rice etc.

Then I came across the McDougall philosophy which is all about eating starch with a plant-based diet.

Then I came across NoS.

This all seemed to happen in the right order for me - because at the same time that I was re-introducing carbs into my diet (fat-free!) - I also found a system of moderation with the NoS diet.

I now enjoy potatoes, breads, pasta with my meals.

However, I do find that on the S days, when I allow myself snacks and sweets - my blood sugar can get out of whack - and I can feel 'hungry' even though I'm eating more often and more generally.

I suppose I wanted to share this with you because maybe you are carb-averse for you have had bad experiences with eating carbs - which I thought I had, but have been able to eat carbs as part of my three meals without any problems.

apologies for the long post!

I loved your share... no apologies, keep them coming.

I only lean more to low carb because of the fact I crave more the more carbs I eat... However! I think you hit the nail on the head with sweets... I think I'm ok with starches and not with sugar, although, I love nuts and nut butters. Offer me pb or cake, I'll choose pb! I don't have big blood sugar issues, although I've hit a fasted 99 before and I don't like that. So I'm careful. I've been thinking about my S days... I'm still not snacking, going to lean to no seconds... but going to allow forbidden foods in. We'll see!!

All in all, I'm just wanting the habit of structure so I don't have to think about food anymore.... for now....

Day 4.... SUCCESS

Bfast was early... maybe 6. A squash, onion, two eggs, some cheese, one sausage all made into a mixed skillet bowl. Had three coffees with cream today... starving by 1 and we ate beef salads... salad obsession... which are basically taco bowls with no taco shells.... dinner I was starving by 7... 1.5 small pork chops, small amount of sweet potato, an eighth of a grilled peach because it was gross (never again!), 5 almonds, cup of broccoli. Not to bad.

Btw, by starving I mean I made it but I was "hangry" by then, haha! It's kinda nice to learn real hunger. I can say 6 and 7 hour stretches are tough right now.

Next two days are S days, which is good because I have a baby shower lunch at a restaurant tomorrow and Sunday I'm out of town staying at a cabin with family. My goal is still no snacking because it's my biggest habit I need to form. But if I snack, it's good to know I don't have to call myself a failure. Sunday were on a dairy farm so I'm dreaming of ice cream... the only sweet that really ever calls to me, ha!

Day 5 S Day

Did 30 mins of intense cardio and 30 mins of weights today... then ate a normal breakfast but had a few Mac nuts with it.... baby shower for lunch and I had a small salad, chicken breast with gravy and veggies and left before dessert. Came home and had to help a neighbor who offered me a small treat and I said no, but they asked again and I had it... it was good.... I think it was dark chocolate with sunflower seeds in it. Yum. Dinner was salad but I had a bit of Mac nuts and a flax muffin with pb and chocolate chips on it. So not too bad for an s day.... man it's freeing to do this diet so far.... So thankful!!

Day 6 S Day

Don't speak too soon. Haha! Breakfast was an egg, almonds and mac nuts but my hubby made 2 ramekins of this peach cobbler stuff for me and the next hour I felt sick and bloated. Had a snack on the road of almonds, met up with my parents and lunch was a small chicken Caesar salad... Then dinner was half a personal bbq pizza and I helped split two desserts! Later I had a cup of popcorn and a handful of mac nuts. We were at a cabin celebrating my dad's bday... So... Haha! So it was a little worse and man I felt bloated after dinner!

Day 7 SUCCESS

Left the campground and had breakfast with my family... had an omelet and only had half the bread and one bite of hashbrown. That's a big deal for me not to finish my plate! And it wasn't on purpose. I'm just not interested. Big win! Lunch was salad and dinner was a cored-out cucumber with tuna salad in it, a celery stick of pb, a celery stick of cream cheese, Mac nuts, and 4 small cubes of the cheeses we just bought. I also have noticed I spend dinner with my husband now and focus on that instead of obsessing about the food.

In other news, my neighbor brought us zucchini bread. Since my husband is doing no s with me (he pretty much does it anyway) - I proclaimed it a sweet and he was sad, but I think he agreed ... So we put it in the fridge and I said if it molds before Saturday, it wasn't meant to be! He seemed to be ok with it.

The last 7 days have been freeing and its teaching me patience since weight loss will be so slow .... glad I didn't weigh myself at the start.

Also did 30 min cardio and 30 min weights!

Day 8 SUCCESS

30 min cardio, 30 lifting then a scramble of two eggs, zucchini, a sausage patty and cheese. That was 7:30. Well, I didn't get to eat again until 3 because my day was too busy. I had a bit of cottage cheese, an egg,Mac nuts, and a stick of celery with 2T pb. Know I had a few coffee with heavy cream between... then dinner with the in-laws of salad with some chicken and a bite of potato. I wanted seconds... probably because of the stress of the day and probably because of having company ... but I didn't! Huge win!

Day 10 NWS Day (gave blood)

Didn't get good sleep... woke up at 3:30 am starving... ate cottage cheese w blackberries, Mac nuts, pb and celery and went back to sleep. Lunch was the same... except I had some buffalo chicken "muffins" that I did a test run on for when school starts and I have to get breakfast quick.

Then I had almonds before giving blood, goldfish and pretzels after.

Dinner was balsamic beef and riced cauliflower. Oh. And I went to eat the last 5 blackberries... worms!!!! Did you know almost all organic blackberries have worms?? I know they're harmless but I tossed them. Can't handle that and now I'm sick to my stomach.

Weighed myself today. Huge. 179.5. But I bet it's less than a week or so ago and I'm going to check it randomly to monitor. I'm sure when work starts back up it will drop. But I'm at my highest weight ever. Ugh. Wish I wouldn't have looked. Oh well!

Taco,

So sorry to hear about your horrible night. Good idea on the NWS day. Not sure if planned or not, but good call. Also sorry on the scale situation. I have been avoiding for fear of the same thing. It can be so discouraging... Hopefully the gain was just a product of waking up early, water retention, or who knows what else- Hang in there!

not sure what your 'salad' consists of, and I'm not a nutritional expert!, but it sounds as if you are eating VERY lightly, and low-carb. Reinhard talks a lot about building the HABIT in the first few months, and not restricting your food too much - especially at the beginning (that being months rather that days/weeks). I hope the next day went better :)

I thought I said earlier what my salad is... maybe not. Here we go:

1.5 heads of romaine (not a typo), handful of diced tomatoes, olives, parmesan cheese, 3 oz meat, 1 T avocado oil, 2 vinegar, onion, hardboiled egg, handful of walnuts... I think that's it. It's massive.

I promise I'm not restricting. :) at least not until at least 30 days pass because, you're right, I do want that habit.

I agree - that's massive! I don't eat meat so I don't know how many calories are in there -and I guess the oil should help bump it up.

I make them myself... but mine differ from the recipe. I used two cans of canned chicken and 7 eggs. Here is the link:http://balancedbites.com/2013/02/easy-r ... ffins.html

Thanks everyone for your support!! I literally look forward to it everyday!! I bought some arctic ice ice cream... looking forward to trying it this weekend!!

No problem!! It's pretty clean and gets in some filling food for breakfast or lunch on the go. Use parchment paper cups... otherwise it really sticks!

Day 12 - S Day

Do since starting no s... I really don't get the urge to cheat. I do occasionally fight the urge for seconds... but otherwise good. Kinda tame today ...

Bfast was cheese and one buffalo chicken muffin. Lunch was salad. Dinner was hilarious... okay I eat lower carb but love vegetables... I got 6 beets in my csa and saved them for dinner. Ate them all, with zucchini, and parmesan cheese. Oh I did eat a slice of Swiss cheese too... then for my sweet, arctic zero... never had it... tried chocolate peanut butter because that is my fave thing ever... it tasted like nothing. Sad. So I put sugar free chocolate syrup and regular natural pb on it... much better, ha! Anyway, my husband ribbed me a little because my "cheat" was beets and low cal ice cream. Ha!

30 min cardio today, 30 min weights, too.

Rest assured, daily I have 3 coffees with heavy cream, too. :)

Day 13- S Day

Well today was certainly an S day. Breakfast was a buffalo chicken muffin and cheese, then I had a snack of nuts and a mint at church. Lunch was cheeses (we went to a farm last weekend, can you tell?), Mac nuts, almonds, walnuts. Then later instead of just coffee with cream I added half a scoop of protein powder and some sugar free almond syrup... so good. Snack of Mac nuts. Dinner was pork, corn, pb and chocolate.

Day 15 -SUCCESS

Breakfast was protein coffee but that hasn't been enough. Had early lunch of balsamic beef, nuts, cheese. Dinner was beats, cheese, nuts and cucumbers mixed with tomatoes, vinegar, basil, oil. Note to self- cannot just have protein coffee. 30 cardio. 30 weights.

Day 16 - SUCCESS

Breakfast was an egg scramble with zucchini and onion and sausage. Lunch was a big salad with almonds. Dinner was balsamic beef on cauliflower. Biked 35 mins/6.75 miles.

The almonds were a little tomfoolery... but I'm not sweating it because I had salad with them...

I certainly feel better when I eat a real breakfast. To think I used to skip them!

Day 17 - SUCCESS?

Breakfast was another skillet (so delicious), lunch was a buffalo chicken muffin, Mac nuts, and a cucumber/tomato/mozzarella salad. Then a friend gave me some radishes... I took a bite of one and then realized what I did and didn't want to ruin it and put it in the fridge. So it's a fail, but not to me because I caught myself. Dinner was salad.

30 min cardio, 30 weights.

Day 18- SUCCESS

Okay... habit is getting ingrained to where I'm starting to not even wanting to bother to write out what I ate. Also, the scale is moving. I didn't weigh myself on day 1, but I can bet it was 180. I was 177 I think today. So that's good.I'm staying with this. Very excited for work to start up because I'm sure my lunches will be smaller.
