mootari check-in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Of note: There were doughnuts and cake in the office today, and I ate neither.

5/7/2016 - S-DAY

Of note: Did not go overboard all day but still felt quite full after dinner (something to work on). Also, bought a slice of cake to enjoy and cut it in half because it was large.

5/8/2016 - S-DAY

Went to bed feeling quite full after eating the reserved half of Saturday's cake slice. Lesson learned: S-Day treats do not have to be huge.

Of note: There were two types of cookies in the office today, but I did not eat them.

5/10/2016 - S-DAY

My stomach had been feeling off for a few days, so I took an S-Day to calm it down with some plain food after dinner. This helped some, and I woke up feeling better.

Of note: Went to lunch with friends and did not devour the basket of chips. Instead, I put a reasonable amount on my plate and ate only those.

I was also very tempted to snack in the afternoon and grabbed some pretzels from the kitchen. I thought about wanting to have a successful day and put them back though.

Of note: Avoided treats brought to the office two days in a row. It turned out to be not that difficult!

Isn't it wonderful what habit can help us do? I was at a funeral yesterday and there was a lunch afterwards. There were cookies there and everyone was grabbing handfuls and going back for seconds. I realized that it took very little willpower to say no. And nobody cared! (More for them :D )

Congratulations on saying no to the "office treats" pitfall. I am lucky in that the office treat bringer (a sweet lovely motherly person) retired so temptation doesn't rear its head all that often. However it seems as though your "treat bringers" are out in full force!

librarylady -- Thank you for the support! I actually like to bake treats, so I am usually the bringer of temptations. I'm trying not to eat what I bake.

5/20/2016 - FAIL

In the interest of being honest, I think it's good to admit this was a failure. There were a few things: I ate a few bites of some homemade bread that someone brought to work in order to be polite. And at lunch, I broke t the "one plate" rule by eating a small side of pretzels that didn't fit. And at dinner, while I did only eat what was on my plate, it was a very large plate, and I'm feeling quite full.

It's worth mentioning that while I consider today to be a FAIL day, I did not go overboard with the snacks, managed to turn down some other snacks later, and definitely did not just say F-it and go crazy. That's an improvement. It was also a learning experience to see how full I was after dinner.

5/23/2016 - FAIL

Visiting friends while on vacation, so I ate some ice cream after dinner. I also snacked and didn't realize I was doing so. Lesson learned: mindfulness is a habit to be cultivated still.

My compliance hasn't been great lately, so I limited my indulgences reserved to the special occasion celebration. It felt good to be in charge and not snack despite people around me snacking.

Vacation! While I'm not thrilled with lots of red, I am pleased that the tracking makes my failure more evident and harder to ignore.
