GabbyGirl2's Daily Check-in

Today so far I have had two slices of toast with PB&J. Not the best breakfast but it's what I wanted. I posted on the general discussion list that I was depressed over yesterday's semi-binge. Today is a new day! It's the first day of my check-ins.

GabbyGirl2, I'm probably a bad person to tell you how to do this(since mine has been messed up for a couple years). But if you go back to your first message, and press the edit sign(I think it's a pencil/eraser), you should be able to go onto your top line, and retype the log title to GabbyGirl2, then hit the submit button. Hopefully somebody more computer savvy than me can chime in. If that fails, maybe message REinhard, but he's sometimes slow to respond. Hope that helps.

Well before NoS it was one time at 255-260, but probably around 225 when I first joined here. You can get there, one step at a time.

Hi GabbyGirl2!

Glad you decided to start a check in! Welcome. :)

The members here are very pursuasive!

For a midmorning snack I had 4 squares of graham crackers. Lunch was a bagel with Smart Balance and some potato salad. Dinner was a stuffed baked potato, grapes, and a 1/2 cup of walnuts (spread out over an hour). I also had two glasses of wine.

After dinner I got a call from my older brother. He said that my sister-in-law is now officially a hospice patient at the VA hospital where she has been for a couple of weeks. She has end-stage MS. The phone call was after dinner so for once I didn't start emotional eating. Small victories.

I noticed that most members do not post exactly what they are eating, but that is where I most need accountability. So for now I will post what I am eating. :)

I post not only my meals, but my thoughts and feelings about each one. lol! But really, I find it great to keep myself aware. There are actually times I will think of eating something, but then think, but then I would have to post it in my check in... so I don't eat it. It's not like a harsh thing, its more when I am not hungry and it would be a mindless nibble. Auto is my meal posting inspiration!

I am having difficulty with not snacking. The seconds and sweet stuff I think I have down. The urges I have to snack are usually not because I'm really hungry; they fill a psychological need. I am going to keep working on it! I said elsewhere that I wanted to incorporate healthy snacks, but I keep feeling like I'm cheating. All I have to do is think about a particular food, and I'm off to the kitchen.

6:30 - two scrambled eggs with cheese, 1 piece of toast
10:00 - 6 graham cracker halves, milky tea with 1 tsp sugar
12:00 - sandwich with deli chicken, apple
3:00 - grapes
6:30 - linguini with creamy dill sauce and broiled salmon
7:00 - 1 glass of wine

You can see that I had two snacks. I have read that many members have fruit between meals, but I want to be pure vanilla before making a mod. I may not be able to. The graham crackers were probably not a good idea ; they should have been eaten with a meal. I guess the scale will tell. That's another issue; how often to weigh.

If you go to the Daily Check In page, where you're currently listed down four lines, go to the right hand side of your line, just to the right of GabbyGirl2, is a little diagonal arrow, click on that and it will take you the last post. Weighing is a personal issue, many on here like to weigh every day(mornings or same time every day); I personally only weighed myself once a week in the beginning. As I progressed, it was maybe once every few weeks. Then it became every few months or at a doctor visit. I had a saying on my old signature line that said, "I do a BMI check by looking in a mirror." I can tell by how my clothes are fitting, and looking in a mirror, if I'm making progress, or regressing.

Thank you - it worked! I have a closetful of clothes I can't wear yet. I keep trying to lose enough weight so I can wear them. I have high hopes for No S. A therapist once told me that the average size for women in the US is 14. I do not wish to be thin, I just want to fit comfortably in the 14's that I I have, without the dreaded elastic waist!

Current weight: 180
Goal weight: 155

Enjoyed the S day! Tomorrow I'm going to try my best to stick with three meals and no sweets, snacks or seconds. Pure vanilla. Where did the term vanilla for No S come from?

I am on track to having a vanilla day. The only thing I haven't done is put each of my meals on one plate; I am doing "virtual plating". The things I am eating really don't go together. If I make it to dinner it will be my first good N day!

B - 2 slices toast with PB&J, orange juice
L - leftover pasta with salmon, 1/2 c. walnuts, 1 1/2 glasses
wine
D - V-8 juice, bagel with Smart Balance, lasagne

This was my first real N day! I am so relieved that I was able to do it. No sweets, no snacks, no seconds.

One thing I found very helpful was dishing out the whole meal at once.
It may not all go on one plate, but it is a habit I have stuck with.
When I do have seconds occasionally, they register as seconds. I like to
have a definite end to the meal. It has helped to put an end to my previous habit
of post meal eating and eating and eating....

CONGRATS ON YOUR FIRST N DAY!!! See, you can do it! I use small bowls or saucers to separate my nuts or fruit I have with my lunch (I don't like when it touches the other food). But I set out all before I sit down to eat.

B - oatmeal with raisins, 1 piece toast, OJ
L - grilled cheese sandwich, graham crackers, wine
D - V-8, potato salad, tuna salad, cherry tomatoes

This is the second N day. It's not totally easy, but it's easier than I thought it would be. I did have a few times when I wanted a snack, but I wasn't hungry yet, so I didn't indulge. One very small moment of resentment that I couldn't eat whenever I wanted to, but it didn't last. On my way!

Congratulations on your second N day!

I know what you mean about resentment. If you try to look at it like it's not that you are not "allowed" to snack or have sweets, but that you are choosing this way of eating to feel better and have a better relationship with food, it may help. I think mindset is almost everything when it comes to changing the way we eat and sticking with it.

I have a long history of starting new diets, and then quitting at the first sign of difficulty, boredom, resentment, etc. I think this time is different, because there's no counting calories or having forbidden foods. I know it will be slow but it's the best of what's out there.

Well done and yes do stick with it, you will have a failure at some point but the important thing is to note mentally what happened and carry on.

This is one of the easiest ways to lose weight but more importantly develop good healthy eating habits.

I've just read the Pioppi Diet, I was interested in the health points made as it is written by a British heart specialist. Good evidence to support 3 meals a day.

I looked up the Pioppi Diet and it sounds like the Mediterranean Diet, which I would like to follow along with No S. I had quadruple bypass surgery in 2012 at the age of 58, so I should be following a healthier diet anyway.

Maybe pick one and stick with that. Don't even bother looking up other diets once you've decided. Keeping a clear mind works to keep us focused when trying to change a lifelong habit. I've been a lifelong workout nut, and about 15 years ago, started to simplify my workouts and equipment being used. Some of it had actually contributed to two or three surgeries, while the fault was mine. On other forums, guys are constantly looking to buy the new "hot" piece of equipment or fancy monitors, phone apps for their workouts, etc. When I became sort of a minimalist on a lot of my habits, it gave me piece of mind, and focused on what's important. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now, LOL.

I have a pretty good motorized treadmill on the lower level of our house, with cable TV right in front of me, but I'm not motivated to use it. In fact, I hate it. Exercise is very difficult for me, except for water aerobics. They just started it again at my local rec center, but I couldn't make it today. Thanks for the advice! You can get on your soapbox any time.

I wouldn't start following a diet at this stage perhaps just note some of the healthy options like reducing processed food to start with.

3 meals a day no snacks needs to be firmly in place :)

B - 3 small pepperoni/cheese slices, bagel, OJ
L - tea with milk and 1/2 tsp. sugar, tuna salad sandwich, potato salad, apple, wine
D - 2 tacos, graham crackers, milk

Today in the afternoon I had a couple of moments of really wanting a snack, but I resisted. I'm really noticing how many times that happens during the day. It's been purely psychological, nothing to do with true hunger. I want to scramble those neurons and form new pathways in my brain. I actually had stomach growls before lunch.

Today is my third consecutive N day.

Today was my first water aerobics class at the rec center since the virus hit. It felt so good to be back in the pool. There were only six of us. They only started classes on Tuesday. The class I take is at the deep end of the pool, 3 times a week at 8 AM. I' ll figure out something for the other 2 days; maybe my treadmill. I haven't exercised since March, but I feel motivated now with No S. :)

Thank you! I guess I have felt so trapped in the obsession that I was willing to try anything other than another diet. No S sounded so simple. I still wonder if I will actually lose weight, but that's because I'm cynical after 50 years of dieting. I have diabetes and a past bypass operation, so those are also incentives. Losing some weight will help those conditions, especially diabetes. I don't want to end up with some awful complication. Last but not least, I am tired of wearing pants with elastic waistbands!

Very true. I had prediabetes for many years before I developed the real thing, but didn't pay enough attention. I have heard that you can ward off full-blown diabetes if you do the right things, like keep your weight down. Hope you're smarter than I am!

6th N day, plus 2 S days, equals 8 days on habit! If you're reading this, please read my No S thread about being depressed on S days. I have decided to treat S days like N days except with a couple of treats.

Gabby - do you wear a CGM or just rely on fingersticks for measuring your glucose? And I can't remember if you mentioned whether or not you take insulin?

Re: GabbyGirl2's Daily Check-in

Posted: Tue Sep 15, 2020 9:06 pm
by GabbyGirl2
I rely on fingersticks to monitor blood glucose. I am not on insulin, at least not yet. Unfortunately, I don't check as often as I should. There's a little denial going on, but my A1c is pretty good at 7.5. My doctor is pleased with it.

Well, you more experienced No S'ers told me it would happen, and it did: I had an unplanned snack today, so it is a red day. I knew exactly what I was doing. As I was buttering the bread, I said to myself, "Self, you know you are about to have a red day", but the robot took over. This is the point at which, on other diets, I would throw the whole thing out and quit, but I AM NOT GOING TO QUIT!!! No S is a great program and I am going to continue tomorrow. The 21 days will just have to wait.

I dont know... I know some members divide their meals when necessary but because its the size of a regular meal they still count it as compliance. I myself often divide my lunch into two on class days because my class is at noon. Highly inconvenient. I have half my lunch at 11:30 so I don't get lightheaded during class and then have half my lunch after class at 1:30. That works well for me and I don't count it as a red day.

B - sesame bagel with cream cheese, OJ
L - PB&J sandwich, apple
D - stir-fried chicken and vegetables, wine

B - shredded wheat cereal, milk, cheese, banana, OJ
L - 2 sliders, wine, grapes
D - chicken, mushroom, and spinach lasagne

Wow, it took two hours to make that lasagne. I'm worn out! I don't think I'll be making that again. Although, my husband really liked it. I liked it, too, but did not have seconds! Two N days.

B - sesame bagel with cream cheese, coffee with milk
L - slider, garlic bread, potato salad, OJ
D - sesame bagel with butter, leftover lasagne

Boy, I need to lay off the bagels! I put the scale back in the closet today. I hung a pair of nice black Dress Barn pants on the closet door, and I will try them on periodically to see if they fit. When they easily do, that will become my goal weight!

As I have said before, I am a diabetic. My older brother, who has a more severe case than I do, told me that snacks throughout the day help keep your blood sugar consistent and stable. I researched this on google and found that the American Diabetes Association recommends 4 - 5 small meals a day. So, I don't think that I'll be doing pure vanilla No S. I can, however, handle no sweets and no seconds. This mod makes me feel better about how hungry I get between meals.

Do what seems to make moderation systematic for you, but know that we have had some type 2 diabetics here that found that after a period of adjustment, they did just fine with not snacking. The biggest problem with snacking is it means you have to be willing to cover less of your meal plates or use very small ones. But your health trumps all. Sending you strength!

Hope it's okay if I say if I had blood sugar issues, I"d be extremely cautious with flour and sugar, no matter what No S says. At my age, the fear of what could happen-stroke is my big fear- would dampen the attractiveness of them, especially since I've worked so many other starches into the mix. But they sure are convenient to get in this culture and just about any culture!

I found it useful for a while I did lose weight and did learn that nothing was off the menu. I also learned that a lot of what I thought were treats I didn't like the taste of.

However at times it took too much mental effort to decide if I was really hungry or what I wanted to eat. I did regain the weight lost and more.

My advice read a few books on it. Paul McKenna was quite useful but try stick to the 3 meals in the week and practice ie at the weekend :)

Thanks, Soprano. Yes, I have practiced two programs that are like No. S, but with different names (Breaking Free From Compulsive Eating, or something like that, and Overcoming Overeating). I have a long history of going on diets or programs, becoming resentful of the restrictions, and then chucking them. I don't know where that comes from, but it happens over and over and over again. No. S has fewer restrictions than many, but it still has some. I have been paying much more attention to hunger signals rather than time of day. I'll stick to IE for a while and see how I do. I also will adopt a way of eating that is more in line with my diabetes, which is not going well right now. Thank you again for your response, I appreciate it.

There is a raft of information about controlling diabetes with low carb and intermittent fasting. It's my belief that small adjustments can have big impacts on our health.so not necessarily a need to go keto or 24 hour fasts. Just consistent better habits will help.

Good luck

All this is for future reference, since you said you have an approach for now. Maybe wait a few weeks before reading?

I hope you can use the incentive of taming your diabetes to get over the rebellion against restriction. I don't believe in diets for weight loss specifically but I absolutely believe in them to reverse disease. It is very unlikely to reverse a degenerative disease by instinct. (By the way, if you see that most fof the U.S. is now overweight or obese, you will see that rebellion is typical, not weird or personal.) It is a manifestation of the survival drive misled by the modern environment of ubiquitous food. You will read of some people stumbling on an eating program that somehow silences this, but they are exceptions. We are often naturally attracted to foods that thwart health because the brain is biased for easy, dense calories- especially refined carbs plus fat- unless there is some kind of appetite suppression which can come about various ways. Thin people get diabetes, too, pretty much eating by instinct.

Not to complicate things, but there are eating regimes to overcome diabetes without going low carb. For a friend I have been perusing Mastering Diabetes by Cyrus Khambatta and Robby Barbaro. They incorporate some intermittent fasting as well.

Warmest wishes!

Oolala, just had a look at that book, I think it may have to go on my list. Have you finished reading it, what are your thoughts?

Soprano - I have looked through that book and give it a huge thumbs-down. Oolala and I disagree on this point, because she is OK with higher carbs for pre-diabetics. All of my research convinces me it is not sustainable for most pre-diabetics and they will gradually worsen. Yes, there are anecdotes of vegans and higher carbs succeeding, but not nearly as much data in that direction. The only clinical trials that have shown diabetes reversal are a) an extremely low-calorie approach (800ish calories a day - have fun with that); b) low-carb with regular caloric intake of many different flavors, Virta Health being the best known and now showing sustainable results at 3 years out.

Auto I really appreciate your input on this, I must admit the headlines of it goes against everything I have read and which made sense to me.

Thank you, I'll save my pennies :)

I have finished it, but it sounds like you are leaning another way and may just get overwhelmed by alternative perspectives. Every author has his/her bias and the reader is always getting that person's perspective, and I admit that even my admired experts probably have confirmation bias. In the end, a person just has to do her best to make a choice she believes in enough to adopt with determination and hope for the best, short AND long term. Let us know how it's going!
