Liz's daily check-in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

But that'll be fun! And NoS can go with you! My husband and I are going away the week of July 20th to Williamsburg and then in August my daughter and I are taking her two kids for a week at the beach. I'm taking NoS with me both weeks! I may have some S events (like ice cream in the evenings from the boardwalk) during both trips, but other than some once-a-day treats, I plan to do strict NoS. That's the plan anyway, so we'll see!
Just make sure you enjoy your daughter and both your sisters and let diet take a back burner. Life is short.

Until August 5 AT LEAST!

I'm making a change. Instead of weighing on monday mornings, I'm going to start weighing myself on Saturday morning. That way, maybe the loss from non-S days will inspire me to keep my S days in control.

We'll see how that works. It's great to start a 21-day stint on a thursday since S days come so quickly! And I have to say, knowing that I'd committed to this with Renee helped a LOT to stay green on Thursday and Friday. A LOT!!!

I had a good week. Not deprived at all mind you. Had some really good meals in fact. But all green.

So I weighed in today (Saturday) to try to make myself do better over the weekend. I'm down a bit from last Monday, when I was up following an excessive weekend. We'll see how this strategy works...

That's great! Keep it up!
I'm so pleased that my vacation plan worked out well. I stuck to Vanilla NoS, with no more than one treat each day.
We'll see how it goes at the beach in two weeks!

Didn't weigh in on Saturday because I was out of town. Over-the-top weekend ensued, but back on track since Monday and will weigh in this Saturday and assess damage.

I'm posting success/(hopefully no) failure on August challenge and will soon be completing my second 21-day challenge, which I thought I should undertake because I had a few red days here and there. It does not feel as successful as the first 21-day challenge because of my continuing problem with weekends.

Haven't been posting for a while. Was doing the August challenge plus more 21-day attempts then went on vacation for two weeks. Started in again on September 1 and have been doing pretty well. Green (except for an S event) but with a growing awareness that some of my "plates" have gotten a bit large. Need to focus on that.

I'm back to my pre-vacation weight :D . Have to try to stay under control this weekend. Will be seeing my doctor on September 18 and would like to be weighing a little less by then.

Bad weekend. Saturday: box of Good Humour chocolate eclairs (though I didn't eat the chocolate ice cream part, which I find too bitter).
Sunday: post-dinner mini-binge, no physical hunger involved.

I just had a great idea! From now on I'm going to write in my daily check in the food I eat on S days. Maybe that will help me keep things under control. Worth a try anyway...

Disappointing, but maybe not entirely surprising, weight gain this week, up to 208. Have a doctor's appointment on Friday. My non S days are going very well. It's those S days for sure, plus high sodium dinner last night (I hope that was it...).

Very reasonable lowish-carb weekend. Had spicy peanuts both days. Walnuts, macadamias, and almonds. Had no sweets and no bread/pasta/fruit but lots of veggies.

Sat 10/17: was so thrilled this a.m. to be at 198. Did pretty well during the day, thinking about getting those twix ice cream bars. Decided not to drive over to the Giant and got Bryers mint choc chip instead. Ate most of it after dinner. Feel sick.

Sun 10/18: ate dinner despite being full from snacking on mini twix bars. Belly distended. Had to stay up til 1:30 I was so uncomfortable!

October 1: success
October 2: success

October 3-4: tame S days
October 5: don't know. Finished my plate, then ate the cheese off the leftover of my daughter's slice of pizza. It would have fit on my plate but wasn't there originally. Marked it and moved on.
October 6 and 7: success
October 8: success
October 9: success

October 10-11: unhealthy S days (late evening binges) October 12-13: success
October 14: failure Made six parmesan cheese crackers as part of dinner (it was a week from expiring) and gave my daughter half. She only ate 1 and after I'd finished my meal, including apple for dessert, I ate hers. Marked it and moved on so success of a sort.
October 15: success
October 16: success

October 17-18: miserable weekend
Next weekend I may be trying Kevin's idea: You *might* want to try the "double sabbath" mod (sundown Friday to sundown Sunday) and see if it makes your Saturdays and Sundays less food frantic.

I would caution you - there's a slippery slope here. Don't let this be an opportunity to just introduce another 12 hours of excess consumption. You will need to "religiously" guard those Sunday nights (part of why I call it the sabbath mod). Make your last meal on Sunday an event to be observed.

We don't do a lot of going-out-socially anymore, so I use a tightened up sabbath mod - if I want, I'll eat seconds or perhaps dessert on Friday night (but still no snacking), and I always stop with dinner on Sunday. Works for me, and I think it keeps me from gorging on Saturday and Sunday.

October 19: failure (last minute invitation to dinner--reasonable, actually small dinner, but two cookies; and yet, that was it, so success in a way)
October 20: success
October 21: success
October 22: success
October 23: failure Snacked on clementines during afternoon. Then had the couscous before soccer game and two slices of pizza after. Then I had a box of twix ice cream bars.
Sat, October 24: over the top S day, with another box of twix. I definitely need to stick to single servings on ice cream etc. Decided to not have an S day on Sunday.
Sun, October 25: success
October 26: success
October 27: success
October 28: success
October 29: success
Stuck to the rules but German bread came last night. Had a slice for breakfast with butter and fresh mozzarella and another slice with butter with lunch, plus chicken salad, jicama, and lettuce salad. Went out to dinner at Chili's. Kept it within bounds more or less though the chips weren't on my plate, but weighed slightly more this a.m.
October 30: not sure what to put for today. I had yucca and mashed potatoes and french fries for lunch along with a few slices of meat and lots of sauce. Tonight I didn't overdo but I had butter with honey with chestnuts and that seems a little too desserty for an N day. So I guess I'll call it a failure, even though I didn't crash the car.
October 31: bad S day.

11 red days in October (because I count S day gone wild as a red day), 4 of which were weekdays. Will shoot for fewer red days in November though I'm not off to a good start.

My goal is to keep S days yellow. I make them red if I go wild.

6 bingy red days in a row. Puts most of my other red days in perspective. They'd be pinks at most. Need to recommit. Had lost 7 pounds in the last month and have now regained them.

Took me a little longer to get back on track but seem to be now, with two green days under my belt.

Felt a little shaky an hour or so ago, thinking I sure would like a second breakfast (my first one was an hour earlier than usual). But I managed to get over the feeling.

Took a friend to lunch for her birthday and decided to treat it as an S event. We overdid it because we got the three-course prix-fixe. But I took some of the food home so it wasn't obscene...

The odd thing was that I felt totally sleepy starting about an hour after the meal and had to go straight to bed when I got home at 5. Had a two hour nap and still felt tired! What was that all about!

For this month, I'm tracking breakfast lunch and dinner separately on the habit cal to make sure that even if I go off track at one meal (I have the no snacking thing down pretty much), I can see whether I go back on track after that. That's a really important aspect of No_s for me: not calling the day a total loss just because of a slip that would (on other diets) have "allowed" me to go whole hog.

Had a permasnacking evening that included sweets and I'm guessing it's because my one-plate dinner form McDonald's was full of fat and salt.

Trying again when, right in the middle of Tuesday afternoon, after large breakfast and lunch, I decided I didn't want to chow down on sweets like I've been doing for a while, which having blown the "diet" that day already would give me license to do and which would then lead to an evening of overeating. So I thought No S would help, and so far, so good, even though I had birthday cake at work yesterday afternoon (and it was not MY birthday). Still, I didn't crash the car so I felt good about that.

Weight (10/12/10): 221.5

When I first started no-S, in January 2009, I weighed 235.5. I got as low as 198 (10/16), but had gone back up to 201 by the following Monday. Damn those wild S days!

Going to the block party tonight. Not sure what I'll do. Maybe make it an S event and then be careful on the weekend. Maybe I'll wait to see what they have. Anyway, new people, maybe better to get to know them than eat!

How did it go? I had one plate of food. Nothing worth spoiling my success for.

Sunday: a very reasonable S day.

Monday: success
Tuesday: success
Wednesday: success
Thursday: qualified success in that one avocado roll would have been enough at lunch (though all still one plate) and I finished Isabel's grapes at dinner even though I'd had my own.
Friday: Michael's retirement lunch but not an S day for me. Still, it's impossible to judge amounts at Fogo de Chao and I ate more than one plate. Still, no dessert, and had my regular breakfast, nothing in between so let's try not to crash the car tonight. They had chocolate at the end and I took a couple for tomorrow! I'm keeping track of each S separately in my habit call so let's go for two greens out of three!
Saturday: Thai for lunch, Poets with Ellen for dinner (no dessert), then two B&J
Sunday, October 31: careful with meals and then Halloween...two steps forward, one step back.

Yesterday was a very difficult day. I walked around the office, hoping to find somebody's leftover Halloween candy. But luckily I didn't find any. Back at home, faced with Isabel's stash, managed not to have any. I really wanted a green day under my belt for fear that it would take me forever to get back on track.
