JD Check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

JD Check in

Post by jd4070 » Mon Nov 08, 2010 6:56 pm

Hello I am new here. I just started my habit cal. I am 5 feet tall and weigh 155 lbs. I hope to develop daily exercise and no s diet habits and see where my weight ends up. I am a little apprehensive about this. From what I understand the human body will adjust to the new amount of calories and will plateu eventually. And the only way to break the plateau will be to exercise more or eat less or both. But I don't care. I want to face my fears and do this anyway.

I am very lazy. I really hate exercising but I know that will make a big difference because I generally do not snack or eat seconds. My sweet tooth has become more controlled lately because I have become severely lactose-intolerant. It appears I can only consume very few kinds of sweets. These things are in my favor. However, I know that it will be a huge challenge to cut back the amount of what I eat at each sitting and it will also be hard to keep myself from bingeing on the weekend.

Wish me luck,
JD :D

Hi jd. Bad luck on the failure at dinner - but what were your successes yesterday? When you first start no S you need to make sure you acknowledge where you are building habits as well as where you have failed. So you failed at dinner - but you succeeded at breakfast and lunch - well done. And when you say 'too much at dinner' - do you mean seconds or dessert? Do you know what prompted you to fail? Any ideas for resisting next time dinner happens (probably today :D )?

Good luck today :D

Hello I don't know. I really appreciate the encouragement. You're right. I breakfast and lunch were a success. What happened was that I forgot that we had been invited to dinner so I had to at eat at least some food to be polite. Not sure what I can do next time if something like this happens again. Any suggestions?

Success! :) I exercised for 5 minutes or so (which is a big deal for me). I had breakfast, lunch and dinner. I noticed I was hungry by the time dinner came along because I didn't eat too much at lunch. That's how its supposed to be right? The later hours of the evening were hard. Although I wasn't hungry, I wanted to eat anyway. I wonder why?

Hi JD,

I totally relate. One thing I noticed is that yes, i AM very hungry by the time dinner time rolls around, and how pleasant that is. Since I've started No S, I've noticed that its disapointing when I am NOT hungry in time for my next meal. Allowing myself to get a little hungry between meals (which I avoided for years with all my snacking) actually makes eating more fun and enjoyable.

The hours between bed and dinner are the hardest for me too, avoiding snacks. But it definitely got a lot easier after the first week or so. There's probably all kinds of emotional and psychlogical reasons, but mostly I think its just a habit. If you've been snacking after dinner for a long time, your body and mind just sort of expect it, and will miss it when its not there.

AnneK that makes so much sense! The fact that it's a habit is probably the reason!

Just keep at the three meals a day. Don't get stressed about the exercise. As it says in the "Book", deal with one thing at a time.

Wish me luck,
I am also 5 feet tall.
Although I exercise (low-impact only), I also am not fond of it,
and I've learned that for me..
exercise raises my mood, and makes me feel more fit,
but it does little or nothing for my weight.

I have learned that:

Food Intake = Weight-Loss and Maintenance of that Weight-Loss
Nutrition = Health
Exercise = Fitness.

I agree with the many Experts who say that
there is a connection between Exercise and Food-Intake.
Exercise makes you hungry, and usually makes you eat more
than burned while doing the Activity.
Plus you cannot rely on any numbers those charts and machines
SAY that you've burned.

Good Luck, and Have a Happy Thanksgiving.
