This is day one of NSD

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

This is day one of NSD

Post by mjhalso » Mon Jan 03, 2011 6:23 pm

So here I go into the teeth of my worst nightmare...that I am responsible for what type and how much food goes into my mouth and when it gets there! It has become a simple math problem... ( I was always terrible at math)... I need to take in less than I burn off... Why is that so scary? I do believe however in habit trumping will power... So I am determined to create the No S habits. I am 57 years old with many decades of yo yo dieting.... I need to lose 70 lbs to get back to healthy... and to get back to a decent game of tennis! I am half way through the day and so far so good...Tonight is the first real challenge! Be Lucky! MJ

Once when I was a research subject in a weight loss drug study... I used to easliy ignore between meal hunger by focusing on and anticipating my next meal... without anxiety... Was it the drug or was it the new habit I had formed? Right now it is 4:30 and I have kept to the plan...and I am looking forward to dinner like crazy! Be Lucky! MJ

I am 57 years old, too. I was 185 lbs. last year when I finally began to implement No S more consistently (after mostly failures from Oct. of 2008 until Dec. 0f 2009, including sugar gorging most days of the week for months). I went from 192 down to as low as 159 over the past 5 or so years, then back up, and got scared. I just accepted that I had to do this or I would spend my last couple of good decades still in the throws of this problem. My S days are still semi-wild, but that is what I'm going to pin down this year. My bingeing is almost totally gone from weekdays, I hardly exercised last year, and I lost 17 lbs. I am actually happy and hopeful. Your progress may be much faster, but really, what options do we have? I don't believe there is another program out there that wouldn't just get me short term results. I could be wrong; 5% of people who try to lose weight reach their goal and stay there for more than 5 years, and they get there lots of ways. I'm still betting on No S.

I affirm you will find peace with food here or somewhere soon.

How was your dinner?

I'm back with No-S after doing pretty well, then floundering, then falling completely.

My dinner tonight was fabulous!

On to day 2!

Post by mjhalso » Tue Jan 04, 2011 2:39 pm

I just placed a Green NS3 on January 3rd on my office calendar!I had a great dinner and though I made certain the whole plate was full they were all very healthy foods! I also went to the gym and did 20 minutes on the bike (I have a gym in my building so no real excuse not to go)... I drank water with some lemon and struggled for the rest of the night but I did not eat another crumb! I made my lunch and did not snack my way through the fixin's either... So I feel pretty good about getting through 1 day...thanks for the supportive comments folks!

Day 2 dinner

Post by mjhalso » Tue Jan 04, 2011 11:55 pm

A real struggle today but I have made it home, spent 20 minutes in the gym and about to sit down to a south beach style meal. Big easy shrimp. We shall see how the rest of the night goes. Mj

Had a great dinner on Tuesday.... Habitually got up several times to head to the kitchen for a snack...but I turned around... the urge subsided without too much struggle... So I have competed 2 days without starying off of the plan... Feel pretty good actually... Thanks for the support...MJ

Hump day. Some people think the first three green days are the hardest. It's just a habit!

ANother Green Day

Post by mjhalso » Thu Jan 06, 2011 11:02 am

To bed early last night no time for hunger! Up at 2:30 to get into the hospital brought my breakfast to have at 7... So I got through the hump day and it is feeling a bit easier... I do however look forward to the weekend and a glass of wine or 2... So far so good...MJ

Friday AM

Post by mjhalso » Fri Jan 07, 2011 1:23 pm

Well four days under my belt... (is that a pun or just an ironic phrase to use?)... and i have not swayed at all! Nice meal last night of tuna, asparagus and whole grain rice.... I was hungry afterwards but resisited with water... I was also tired being up since 2:30AM so sleep came easily to assist me in my efforts to resist!.. Nonetheless I am looing forwrd to the weekend and a "cautious" reward... I have to rememebr that the weekend starts on Sarurday...not friday night... Thanks agin...MJ

Yes, think of the weekend as starting at whatever time you get up Sat. I had a few weekends of being up late enough Friday that midnight passes and I started taking advantage of the no-holds barred. Mistake!

Wonder why you had a meal you felt hungry after. Or did you just feel peckish? In any case, you've had a great week. Congrats!
