Kevin's (new) Daily Check-in

Posted: Fri Jan 14, 2011 1:14 am
by Kevin
Today is a good day to re-start. So, January 11 is day 1.
Starting weight - 189.
Day 1 - Success
Day 2 - Success
Day 3 - Success (well, a couple of hours early)
Day 4 - Success

Day 5 - S-day, but I'm still being moderate

Day 6 - S-day, but nice and moderate. Had a reasonable serving of chips
and salsa, then a handful of peanuts to go with the football games.

Day 7 - Success , although this might have been one of the worst days of my Type I diabetic life in terms of control. In thirty years, I do not think I've had a more out-of-control day, and I have no idea why. I'm much much better today.

Day 8 - Success
Day 9 - Success

Day 10 - Success.

I practice the Sabbath mod. I begin my weekend on Fridays with dinner and end it on Sunday with dinner. However, experience has taught me to be careful about this. I allow my self seconds or dessert Friday night, but no snacks. During the rest of the weekend, I allow myself one snack between meals, and seconds or dessert (sweets) with dinner only. It's enough to let of steam, but not so much that I counteract what good I did during the week, or enough to make me feel stuffed, depressed, or guilty.

One of the S's in the No S diet was "sometimes."

Day 11 and 12 (1/23) are S days, but I stayed moderate, so I feel good about them. Onward to another week of radically moderate behavior. :)

Yay! On to another week along with you...

I would LOVE to weigh 189. I guess that sounds pretty sad coming from a woman.

You start where you start and you put one foot in front of the other, right? Each step in the right direction is two steps further from where you would have been had you gone in the wrong direction. :)

Day 12 (Monday) - Success

I should explain that I am a Type I diabetic. My blood glucose, a couple of times a day, gets clinically low. This happens most after exercise. When it does, I treat it, with about 15 grams of dextrose (sugar). I do not count this as a failure.

Day 13 (Monday) - Success

I have been using my lunch hour to walk 2.5 miles every day. It's a great way to get a little exercise and a micro-adventure in the middle of the day. SubUrban Rangering! I'll start the Shovel Gloving again soon, too.

I go out some evenings and alternate fast-running 200 paces with walking 200 paces for another couple miles. I do this rather than jog more slowly. The dog appreciates when I can get up to his galloping speed. It changes his attitude entirely.

Day 14 (Tuesday) - Success

Getting adjusted to eating like this (again - I'm a repeat offender) is difficult. I've cut my basal insulin by about 15% and my blood glucose is still low frequently. I forgot how much of a difference eating moderately makes.

Day 16 Thursday - Success

Day 17 Friday - Success

The snow has really killed my ability to walk. Oh, well. Gonna have to find something else to do for a week or so.

Great work! I too had lots of snow to shovel....after my 5 hour drive home Wednesday night!

It's Saturday. My son had a match so I did not do as much exercise as I would have liked. Then again, I would not have had much to do as there is snow everywhere I would normally walk (making it unsafe, not merely inconvenient). Oh well.

Sunday was fine, too. I still have nowhere to walk and that's driving me nuts, but otherwise, No S is fine.

Tuesday February 1 - Success
Wednesday February 2 - Success

Saw 184 on the scale last night, but I'm sure I will be heavier tomorrow. Still, I feel like I'm doing okay.

Absolutely stir-crazy with the snow, though. I would love to walk, but it just isn't safe - it's mostly icy. Oh well. The ice will be gone soon enough.

That's an excellent loss in only a few weeks. Well done!

Thanks for stopping in, funfuture.

I've been on this road before (Mine is the very first post in the 21 Club - then I slipped off track for a couple of years). I know I haven't really lost that much weight yet. When the ice and snow goes and I can start walking again, I'll lose it fast enough. I don't mind the cold at all, but I'm too old to be slipping and sliding with the dog pulling on me in the dark.

Today was a success, although dinner was funny. I met my wife at a pizza place and had one slice and *knew* it wasn't enough. I had a salad when I got home. I know it technically violates the rule, but I'm not taking myself to task over leafy greens, carrots, tomatoes, and a little oil and vinegar. I'm just not.

Happy weekend everyone.

Friday 2/4 - Success.

I'm going for a walk tomorrow (I cannot believe how jazzed I am). It's been snowy, icy, and dark when I'm home. I went from walking an average of six miles a day to zippy las week when the snow and ice storms started.

Saturday morning me and the dog are heading for the woods. Hot damn.

I will start SG again tomorrow, too.

Saturday 2/5 - S Day, but a moderate one. Unfortunately, no walking. It rained all day. But, it's supposed to be nicer tomorrow. Let's hope!

Sunday, 2/6 - Hot dog, the sun is out, the temperature is in the 40s, and I'm going to Black Hills Regional Park with the dog to do five miles! Woo Hoo!

Superbowl snacking will be some sushi we bought at Trader Joes and then three bean chili with hot italian sausage. I win! :)

It just got too late too quickly for me to SG tonight. Exercising late means I don't sleep well. Not sleeping well makes No-S hard. So, tomorrow's another day.

Just checking in! Hope you get some good walking time in this weekend!
I know what you mean about the ice, have you ever tried Yaktrax?

dee, RJRO, thanks for stopping by.

I have not tried Yaktrax, although I've thought of them. It's not just the ice, it's the dark and the downed tree branches on the grassy side of the road where I usually walk. If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind? (I don't know who said that. Someone optimistic and cheerful. I should look it up. Shelley. Who knew?)

Friday 2/11

NoS - Success
Urban Ranger - Fail
SG - Fail

Friday was not a great day for these things, but I'll get back on the exercise track.

Saturday... S day. I handled it pretty moderately. Two pieces of pizza for lunch and a little popcorn after dinner. Sat around all day at my son's wrestling tournament, but tomorrow is another day. It is supposed to reach (gasp!) 50 degrees. So... I will be walking.

Feeling your pain here in Chicago! It warmed up over 32 for the first time since November, today. Spring is just 5 weeks away, and March is always warmer than February, which is always warmer than January! Hang in there!

That's cold!

I don't mind the cold so much, but pile on the ice and the difficulty of getting out of my neighborhood and it's just daunting after dark.

NoS - Success
Urban Ranger - Fail
SG - Success

So I'll say right out that NoS was a near-fail, but because of the Diabetes (Type I Diabetes is demanding). Dinner was late, my blood glucose was low, and I probably ate more than I planned to. But such is life: low blood glucose and frustration over it can make you a little nuts. Still, it was an exercise in virtual plating and what I had could easily have fit on one plate. I have to cut myself slack over the issue of low Bg.

Thursday 2/17
No-S Success
ShovelGlove Failure
Urban Ranger Failure

Had a fever which bloomed into a flowing head cold. Oh well. I went to work today (Thursday) but did not UR or SG. I'm not upset that I failed at those, really. Today was an unplanned 12 hour day at work after being off sick for two days. I did what I could do.

Okay, so I thought I was better, but I was not. I'm hoping I'll be back up at it tomorrow.

At least it's sunny and Spring-blustery today. The snow is all melted. Cheery.

2/20 - Back up and running. Looking forward to next week.

2/21 No S, SG, UR . Okay, my first NoS fail since I restarted on January 10 or 11. First day back at work after being in bed for days with a fever. Bg all messed up (Type I Diabetes), did not plan well at all. I did not go nuts or anything, but I broke plan. Oh well. Better days are coming.

2/22 NoS, SG, UR Too much ice on the ground to walk. Soon though. Soon.

2/24 NoS, SG, UR. Rain, rain, go away, I'll have to walk some other day.

So I noticed I'm down 10 pounds in seven weeks, which is pretty respectable. I guess I don't have to worry that I'm still eating too many calories.

Monday Tuesday and Wednesday were all successful NoS days. I took Tuesday off from from SG because my back hurt. I'll do it tonight. I have not been able to UR, but I'll try to get back on that wagon soon, too.

I was travelling for work this week. I did okay, but restaurant meals are always richer than the kind of cooking we do at home. My Bg was low a lot, so I ate more straight dextrose than I have in a long time. Oh well. Diabetes is what it is.

Onward!

I see your ticker tape is moving in the right direction, 'dee. :)

I'm doing okay. I'm not really losing any weight, but I'm okay with that for the moment. Oddly, my pants keep getting looser anyway. I'll make further adjustments if I need to.

Koopa (on this board) wrote about the Couch to 5K program, which rung a bell with me, so i started that this week.

Thanks for checking in!

So tonight we had salmon, which is a good excuse to eat asparagus. We also had quinoa. Asparagus and quinoa are very good together, very complimentary flavors.
