Hi,
Somewhere among this forum I read that women who are reasonably near their target weight will have trouble losing. I'm 12 pounds away. I've been doing No S for 2 weeks and only lost 1 pound! Thinking maybe something else to lose the weight and then No S to maintain??
Please can someone advise?

No S is not a race. It is slow, healthy and doable without this pesky JoJo-effect. That's the trick.
If you want to lose weight fast, i would recommend one of two ways
- One of the trillion other diets out there, that's claiming to help you to lose x pounds in y days.
- Excessive Cardio or weightlifting
Maybe that works for you. A lot of people try it and even if they lose weight, it doesn't seem to stay off.
No S as a concept is: It moderate and don't care about your weight because someday you reach your right weight.
If you want to speed the losing process up, i always recommend:
Stay on No S + Working your butt off
Let's look at the other option:
You find a crash diet to lose your 12 pounds in 4 weeks. Now you want maintain with No S. But you didn't build a clean eating habbit while on your diet and your body is in starvation-mode.
To try to build a good eating-habbit in that situation is like balancing a beachball on your nose while your shoes are on fire!

Welcome to No S!
I would suggest you relax and enjoy the freedom which No S brings.
If you calculate out the pound you lost over the next few months you will see the loss is happening.
No S is not fast but it is effective in building a lifestyle that you can live with regardless of what is happening in your life.
Adding consistent exercise can help too.

It looks to me like you are already in a healthy weight range. So losing on NoS for you will be a very long process. You might or might not reach your target weight, depending on how strict you are on N days and how soon your S days calm down. However, I'm with germanherman on that crash dieting followed by NoS will likely not work.
If you are still losing 1 pound per month than that's great. In the meantime enjoy losing diet-head.

I am in the 'healthy' range but I am usually around 8 stone, i put on a stone last year after I gave up smoking and am hoping to lose it again! I am a very small build so it shows on me. I am walking during my lunch breaks and after school I will also be starting to skip"! I've lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks on No s. the stone was from sweet snacking which I am massively partial to!

Maybe try counting bites in your 3 meals with No S. That is what I do, I have lost all my wieght and am now maintaining. I do 3 meals a day and have N and S days.

If you are still losing 2 pounds in 2 weeks and your sweets are reigned in through NoS than I think you have absolutely nothing to fear. NoS will definitely get you there. I wouldn't try any mods yet. In what I have read on these boards very few people have sustainably maintained their weight loss when they modify and counting bites sounds as unappealing to me as counting calories, although I am very happy for herbsgirl that it seems to work for her.
As long as you're losing, even if it might be slower than you would wish, the healthiest thing is to stay with vanilla. This way it can become a completely unconscious habit, something very few mods achieve.

Welcome, Niki! I second eschano and MerryKat -- modifications are for when No S isn't enough and doesn't work after compliance for a significant amount of time. That's not the case with you -- one pound a week is good, steady, reliable loss! Congrats and keep up the good work!

Vanilla means following the plan exactly as written with no modifications. It is highly suggested not to add mods "prematurely." Nothing official about what is premature, but most longtimers call 6 months to a year "mature."
Trying to eat a lot less to get to a certain weight and then maintain by upping the amount of food eaten is basically hugely unsuccessful.
Isn't it possible your weight was artificially low when you were smoking?
BTW, if you were living in the U.S., you would weigh less than 70% of women of your age and height. So you'd be in the top 3 thinnest out of 10.

sounds like you are in much the same position i am. i want to hit the illustrious 130 or under club and it just doesn't seem like it will happen. i have started caring less about it. i'm about 8 lb over that and i'm finally happy with myself. there are definitely days i love my body and days i don't but i'm trying to maintain a realistic expectation that 125-130 is not going to happen and that's ok! sometimes we have to adjust our mind to reality instead of our expectations. not telling you what to do but i know i'm much happier now at a little heavier (But still definitely in the healthy range). by the way i am near 5'5" or maybe a little under. so definitely sounds like we are in the same part of our healthy range, just maybe not where our mind imagines us to be. the other thing you could do is start doing some strength training and eat more protein. that has done wonders for my body shape. i can still wear a US 6 and some 4's and i never could before at this weight. it's because i've transformed my body to have more muscle and less fat. don't even care about the number if your muscle percentage is getting better! weight is just a number.

I am a mid-30's woman who started out already in a healthy BMI range. I have the smallest frame size for my height (i.e. I'm small-boned), so by following No-S I have drifted down towards the bottom of the healthy BMI range. So, it is possible, depending on your activity level and body type.
However, I do say "drifted" down - the first 6 pounds came off relatively quickly, but the rest came off veeeery slowly, in the order of about 0.5 to 1 pound per month. However, it has been almost totally painless, doesn't prevent me enjoying my vacations, weekends, Christmas, birthdays, etc and I can see myself doing it for the rest of my life. Even as slow as 1 pound per month, in 1 year you'll be at goal.
If you build a good routine and stay on habit for a few months with no results, then consider listening to Reinhard's podcasts about Mods (#35, 36 and 37). They are an excellent starting point.
Will it be slower for us than for a tall man with lots to lose? Of course. But my next question would be: so what?

yes i would be very happy with a small loss. and maybe you will drift down to a lower weight. just depends on where you're meant to be. for me it's toward the mid of my BMI range and i'm happy with that. at some point if i lost a few lb effortlessly that would be fine too but i'm tired of feeling sad and deprived on all my past diets.
