New shovelglove video!
New shovelglove video!
Just a test to see how google video works. I go through all the basic movements once (7 rep sets). Much better than the non-streaming quicktime stuff I'm currently using on shovelglove.com. I think I'll do a separate video of each move and link to each from the movements pages/registry.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 5206&hl=en
I'll probably bang a few of these out over the next few weeks and put a poll here so people can vote on which I should keep. It's ridiculously easy, and no stress on my server because google hosts it. I can even use it to try out some of the new moves people have posted recently and get feedback on whether I'm doing them right.

Thanks for the feedback, Deb and Pete.
Some ideas for future video:
1) one clip per movement
2) a full 14 minute routine you can follow along with (low rep counts, very slow tempo)
3) (maybe) bare torsoed so you can see that not just the arms are being hit. I hesitate to do this because of the quasi pornographic or at least narcissistic overtones, but it's something people constantly seem to be worried about and there's no better answer than to say "look."
Let me know if you have any more suggestions (should I talk more? Less?) . Also, I'm not really familiar with the whole online video world. If there's a better site for what I'm doing here (youtube?) I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Reinhard,
The videos are going to be really powerful tools for Shovelglove. Your stuff has changed since you made the Quicktime videos! So, it was neat for me to see how your routine changed and it was also interesting to compare how I do the moves to how you do them.
I think having separate clips for each move as well as a 14-minute clip is a great idea.
I'm sure that there are plenty of potential shuggers who would love to see you exercise without your shirt but I don't think the resolution will be good enough to actually see what muscles are worked. Also, I'm still rather against even classifying the movements in a "muscles worked" way. Perhaps we can come up with a classification system which is movement-based: vertical swings/horizontal swings/vertical pounding/horizontal pounding, etc...

Hey Rein
LOL..
Let's see.. First, I say yes you should show off your amazing results, but how about this as an alternative to actually doing a semi nude workout..
(Though I admit that you wouldn't hear *me* complaining! LOL...)
Can you somehow start the video with a closeup to a good before photo, so that people can see where you began?
Personally when I look at your before and current pics, if I didn't know you already, I would have a very hard time believing it was the same man..
So somehow, you really should have a before image inserted into the video...
I think it's unnecessary to create a workout for people to follow along, as really everyone has their own personal pace and music etc.. In addition, I think that staring at the screen while shugging is kinda antiethical to the whole concept..
But, that being said, yes definitely do create individual movement videos with a good description, maybe just before you do it, of how it came about or was inspired.. This might just be a two sentence intro..
You might also want to mention that it's very important to go at your own pace.. The breathing was very obvious! So that spoke for itself!
But I do think you went pretty fast on some of those movements, and perhaps it's really important to make a special video where you get the basics out of the way in talking form, ie: how long you have been doing this, what weight sledges could be used, etc..... I mean newbies who attempt a workout at that speed, can, I'm almost sure, get hurt by straining a muscle... Maybe that "Instructional video with the general precautions you suggest (and of course the disclaimer that people should be in good shape on some level when they begin this anyway) and you could flash the audience your righteous pecs and abs then!
Heh heh!
You should rightfully be proud of what you've accomplished Rein so yeah, let the world see you in your Shovelglove buffdom!
I still love the fact that you did it in your home and did it yourself, with the baby toys all around etc...LOL.. I'm sure it's weird to talk to a camera, I know, I did that for several music videos I made for people.. Infact singing into a camera, without an audience was even weirder.. But you have a nice speaking voice, so yeah, use it....How about getting Justin involved a little.. Maybe he could be your off camera interviewer and you could write up a little Q and A with him leading you through the moves? Or perhaps your wife?
How is he by the way? We never see him anymore...
Incidentally.. Were you using your heavier sledge for the video?
I would like to think it was your twelver? But if that was your 20 lb sledge, then I'll be a monkeys uncle (or aunt)!!! LOL..
I love youtube and supposedly it's easy to use, so yeah, go for it!
The more the merrier
Well guess what I'm about to go and do now???
One guess!
Heh..
Here's a hint... It's for fourteen minutes...
Peace and Love,
Deb

Thanks again, Deb and David, this is very helpful.
1. I'll keep my shirt on.
2. Glad you like my speaking voice. Funny that I'm more nervous about that than about appearing half naked.
3. The before/after flash is a good idea...
4. Yeah, a little more description for each move and the whole thing would help.
5. Yes, I was using the 20 pounder. I'd probably have an easier time speaking if I went with something lighter
7. I'll definitely add "go slow" and other disclaimers.
8. Because this is all liable to take a while I'll get the individual movement ciips up first.
9. Justin has moved beyond shovelglove to actual farming. No kidding.
Sorry for the bullets... lots of points and I've only got a few minutes to respond.

Good luck!
Just work out a little outline or something in advance, which you use for each movement.. and do your speaking before you do the movements, so it's clear and you aren't gasping your brains out!
BTW.. That was the speed you use with a 20 lb sledge???????
I am in awe!!!!
You are my idol!!!!!!!!

Youtube is much better than google video for my purposes, because I can embed the video on my site. This is perfect for the movement clips.
Here's the new drive fence posts:
http://shovelglove.com/movements/drive_fence_posts/
(clip lifted from the google video, but I think you'll agree the presentation in context is much better)
Youtube has a maximum clip length of 10 minutes so I'll have to stick with google for the biggie.

As I just posted in the movements registry discussion, all the movements now have youtube video clips:
If you feel compelled to rate them highly, I see no reason why you shouldn't
Next step is to get a bigger clip for my publishing contact to publicize. Maybe save your rating clicks for that if your index finger tires easily.
