Allison's Springtime check-in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Scale back to being at highest weight. I'm not surprised though. It's been a very red month with a couple of nasty binges. I'm going to start with going back to having a 250 calorie protein bar for breakfast each day. I think the big bowls of cereal are probably adding on more than I think.
And I'll continue to get the veggie pita instead of the gyro when we go to greek. Though I'm not sure that the large amount of feta is actually saving me anything.
What really sucks is the pool opens in a week  I was at my highest weight last year and could not stand to wear a bathing suit and now I'm 7 lbs higher than that.

Well done with the no ice-cream habit. I think we all have things we can resist and things we can't. I could happily sit in front of a pile of biscuits or a cake without worrying, but with an open packet of crisps/chips you would have to tie me to a chair for me not to touch them, I couldn't stop myself. I wish you all the luck in continuing to conquer this :D

B- Protein shake
L- Hot dog w/bun, 3 l/c rolls
D- Salad, 4 crinkle fries, cantaloupe

Haven't had a hot dog on a bun in years, so that was different. Last day of preschool for the summer. 10 day streak, going on 11 for NO tastes of ice-cream. I had to check when tempted at the best ice cream stand in town, and then stayed strong against the softened, from-the-trunk, Sea Salt Caramel Cheesecake ice cream the family was all digging into.

Had few bites of chicken (well the fried crunchy part that isn't actually even chicken) and corn while putting the leftovers away from dinner.

Summer is almost here which means lots of snack foods, and dd making all sorts of creations, making a ton more meals for all the kids, etc. I am happily keeping No S in place this summer. Last year I took a summer break from No S, but I won't make that mistake again. If anything, summer is, by far, the most important time to keep the habit alive!

B- protein bar
L- Afternoon grill out (nice calm amount of all)
D- Bowl of watermelon chunks

Hubby is out with kids bringing home fresh yummy donuts. I must be strong... This is even harder than ice cream for me!

Update: I did NOT eat any Krispy Kreme WITH THE HOT LIGHT ON donuts. It was really really hard, made even more so that it IS technically an S day. So very proud of myself!
:)

Cereal mishap at 10pm. Same excuse as usual...

I can't guarantee it, but I'd bet you will have a much happier summer if you keep N days green. But you can't find out if you don't live it.

Regarding the donuts, try to imagine if you will be sorry you didn't have any if you pass them up or glad you passed on them.

Enjoy life in between your meals, too!

I will use it... I NEVER REGRET SUCCESS!!

B- Cereal, watermelon
L- Lean cuisine rolls w/ buffalo ranch, c watermelon
D- cantaloupe, watermelon, bagel chips w/ jalapeno cream cheese

Scale rather hideous today, so I am aiming for a very lean green week. Love the melons are in season.

Great job! I love successes like this one because they show us we really CAN do this--we really DO have self control. It's a muscle that gets stronger as we exercise it, and we can build on experiences like this one.

B- Protein bar, watermelon
L- 6 l/c rolls w/ ranch, 1/2c cheezits
D- Chix strip, potato bite, cantaloupe

I read through the last 2 1/2 years of my posts; very enlightening! I definitely wrote more from the heart the first year. After the dd "events", I closed off and just started writing my meals on here. Well the first year (which was the second after a year of no S lurking) the scale was going down, whereas this year it's going up. I realize the full-on menopause and stresses of this past year play some factor, but I do think not sharing my day-to-day feelings has had an impact. I am going to try and start small by writing at least a sentence each day beyond *just* what I ate and possibly get back where I was; summarizing the days up and downs without the militant menu.

Good for you. So many things affect our successes and failures, even with as straight-forward as No-S is! My perimenopause symptoms have ramped up lately, and all the hormonal changes can be quite a rollercoaster at times. Hang in there!

That's so wonderful! I bought two new dresses recently, actually! I have a couple of summer dresses that "fit," but they are cut totally wrong for me--I really need the A-line look and not the raised waist--that look makes me look so much heavier. I was so excited to find one at a second-hand store, and another one on sale that both have the right cut.

I hope you had a nice date night with your hubby!

Thanks Merry, we had fun! I got the A-line look on these 2 dresses I purchased from Target. They're having BOGO half-off dresses, and the A-line seems to be the new look. Definitely check them out! My daughter was actually speechless that I was such a stylin' mom!

Anyway we didn't get too crazy last night, well kind of lol!

B- Cereal
L- 3 lean cuisine rolls w/ dip, bowl of Brussel sprouts
D- Lean cuisine, watermelon, 4 chips with dip

A little fuzzy but  enough

I'm on day 18 with no ice cream. I've decided that on my birthday (the 8th) I going to break the streak and have a great big cone of the yummiest flavor I can find!

So true, much better kind of wild!

Well on this S day, I finally caved to the fresh donuts. Nothing crazy, a bite of each kind. I think the first sweets I've had in a while. My NO ice cream streak has had a positive effect on the other sugary things. And the donuts were fantastic so I'm not sorry I held out until now!

Another kind of grazing S day, just because I was nervous of the donut calories... watermelon, cantaloupe, bites of grill out meat, lean cuisine rolls, few chips/dip.

Happy to get back to a No S Monday
:D

Glad you enjoyed them. Donuts are one of the sweet foods that I can pass by more easily, though the French crullers and ones filled with custard or something like frosting held allure for a long time. Thankfully, all sweets play a smaller role for me as time goes on, though it's not completely carefree. But it's worth whatever effort it takes.

So I'm having an issue with the melon season. I keep watermelon and cantaloupe cut up in the fridge for everyone to eat. But I just can't stop from eating it through the day. I would make a mod of it, but it reminds me of Reinhard talking about eating an orange. The food may be healthy/low cal but it's ingraining the habit of eating between meals.
I guess after talking it out, that makes today a  day.

Still it's so hard when it's only this summer season. Now I'm right back to why I stopped No S ing last summer. This is exactly why. I remember my husband saying it was ridiculous to not eat fruit and I did a big WTH. So even though I know the correct answer I just have to implement....EAT FRUIT WITH MEALS.

I still haven't had a single taste of ice cream in 3 weeks with my 7 app, so maybe I'll make some kind of fruit rule. These mini rules really help out!

Alisonmeg I know exactly how you feel about fruit. It's the one part about No S I find difficult both to implement and to get my head around. It is so ingrained that there can't be anything wrong with eating fruit at any time......but on the other hand it is snacking and I do feel more successful and stronger on the days I've only eaten it as part of a meal.

Maybe we could give up fruit snacking together, motivate each other through it until the new habit is ingrained :D
I CAN do this.

Your husband must be very happy to have so much influence over you.

And you see why it's better not to even tell people about the rules, though it's too late for that one now. We're all so used to making big pronouncements about our eating plans, and weighing in on everyone else's.

But you can mask it by saying, You know, I really am enjoying my meals better when I don't ruin my appetite with food. Then don't cave, or it will just invite sabotage.

If you need some other ammunition for yourself, know that there are some who think that asking the body to keep pumping insulin out to accommodate incoming food often is not good for us, not to mention that insulin makes it easier to store fat.

Or listen to the podcast on strictness and use habitcal! Or give yourself some small reward each day for sticking to it. An online friend just burns a candle or something small like that when she's starting a new habit.

B- Watermelon (little plastic bowl), 6 cantaloupe balls, 1/2 banana w/pb
L- Mcdonalds salad, half piece pizza
D- hmmm it's next day can't remember, but fine! Oh watermelon for sure

This is going to be an interesting food day out of the shoot. I've NEVER had a breakfast of fruit before, so I expect to have some kind of major spike midmorning. And midmorning is my son's end of year pizza party in the park.

....Ok that worked well to have a salad for the party.
Yes Skycat, let's do that!

:D S day!

Had to celebrate my birthday a day early (ds called out on trip) so after 21 days with no slips....we went to the ice cream shop and I had a big praline pecan ice cream cone!!

Also this afternoon, dd made scones, so I had one of those. She wants to make a key lime pie for my birthday to have belated on (S)aturday, but my whole plan was I wanted the ONE ice cream cone and not a "cake" (because I am a maniac around key lime pie). Yet I will be hurting her feelings....she's 15 and loves to bake her gifts to friends and family. Also it will be a whole pie here and no one else will even eat it. Hmm I'll figure something out.

Oh on Monday, I started a new little '7 week app habit' to try and get a 21 day streak of not weighing myself. I am not sure if it's a good or bad thing, but want to see if reducing my numbers obsession will possibly help (or at least not hurt) the scale. You could probably name any date in the last thirty years and I could tell you exactly what I weighed!

BTW the ice cream sucked... I was so disappointed I held out for blah ice cream. There were virtually no pralines OR pecans in it, rude!!!

Oh, that's a bummer about the ice cream! So unfair!!

I hope you enjoy the Key Lime Pie. Do you have a friend or two you could share some with? An elderly neighbor who might enjoy a piece? Can you freeze some for S days to come?

You should have asked for your money back on the ice cream.

NO ONE else likes key lime pie? Is is possible for your daughter to make a mini-version of a pie? Or tell her to invite some friends over on the weekend and have some?

Kind of a "sweet" problem to have. As you said, you'll figure something out.

Just one of those birthdays that I pretty much forgot it was. I ate green but then had a few bites of watermelon this evening.
My daughter made bazillion calorie triple cookie dough/oreo/ brownies. This was after I told her a flat out no on the pie. Last time she made them, I couldn't resist. This time there was no way on earth I was even eating a crumb of them.
I did so well on the ice cream 21 day streak that I think for my next 21 I'll add ALL sweets to the rule. I need to do this anyway, as my dd is already planning caramel popcorn balls tomorrow. She is a disaster on our weight when she's out for the summer!

Anyway hubby and I went out last night and had a great time, I didn't eat even when his yummy chix wings came out!

So you didn't feel that other sweets were a kind of safety valve the kept you compliant on the ice cream?

Look at you, exercising your self-control muscles! I love that you are building on that strength you have gained from no ice-cream for 21 days! So proud of you! Keep up the good work!

Tonight I was sorely tempted by a beautifully frosted cupcake but am saving it for my S day. Resistance is a good thing :-). Sometimes I like to dream a bit about what something will taste like--it's fun to have a specific treat to look forward to.

Aahhh yes it is Merry. That is going to be a yummy cupcake!
Back to the grind today, b'day's over and rest of kids last day of school...hello Summer and No S!

B- Cereal, watermelon
L- Lean Cuisine flatbread melt, dd's plain apple pancake
D- Deviled egg, cream cheese on pretzel thins, watermelon, 3 roll ups

I actually got a morning workout in, usually doesn't happen until after homework and dinner. Started cleaning for the messiness of summer with lots of kids!
I officially changed my no ice cream habit to no sweets; goal is 21 days.
After the bad ice cream, I'm so much more relaxed about it, and still haven't touched those brownies. And flat out told dd I don't want any pie.

I like the sound of the option, but I don't know if a teen would think it has the same joie de vivre. She might subconsciously sense it doesn't have the same drug effects...

I WILL see if she'd make that. She loves playing "Restaurant" with the younger kids and they eat it during the year. Today's menu was Fruity Pebbles marshmallow treats. (and boy did she say she wished I could have a bite many times over). Pretty sure you're right oolala.

I absolutely love how I can make this RULE and it's suddenly like my shield of armor. I think after 3 years of this, I'm losing my sweet tooth . Didn't feel the need to eat the leftover bite of donut, and all this on an S day. I had a handful of Terra chips but that was about the only snack food.
Didn't really keep up with what I ate today but felt right.

Ugh I just wrote a book on here and lost it.
Now it's just the facts. Great :D S day, really getting comfortable with them. Still doing great on my NO SWEETS rule for 21 days and No weighing in. The combination of the two has made me oddly relaxed.
Still I'm kind of short with everyone just because it IS an adjustment suddenly having 5 of the 6 kids back home for the summer.

This is just a non counting regroup kind of day. Had a bit of a mishap last night which involved rice krispies and a cookie. I never know how to count that for today without starting a vicious cycle, so today is just a NON day. I ate nothing for breakfast and a cream cheese sandwich with pretzel crisps for lunch and not eating anything else. I guess that really makes today okay and a once beautiful S day Sunday, an S day gone wild.

B- Protein bar, watermelon, small bowl of cereal
L- Lean Cuisine flatbread thing
D- small piece freezer pizza, cream cheese w/ pretzel thins, pudding

I was hungry this morning, went to bed starving but did not cave into it last night!
Ditched the No weigh-in for a strange sounding mini habit of the week. I am not looking up anything that has to do with my daughter's college, college classes, etc, nor looking up/lurking on her friends', boyfriend's instagrams, finding things to buy for her dorm, and so on. Ever since her breakdown last year, and now her leaving for college in 2 months, I have gotten more and more obsessed with every aspect of her life. So this is my first way to try and back off. My computer has so many favorites all marked with stuff having to do with her. I put it all in one folder and put it away. Just aiming for one week right now. It's become a complete obsession.

 Made worm pudding dirt cups with kids and ended up eating it

Update: OMG, this was the worst eating day ever. I totally did a WTH after the red dot pudding. Possibly it was a bored/substitute thing because I couldn't look up stuff on my dd all day.
Add a blueberry muffin to the mix, (and of course watermelon, cantaloupe, bite of potato salad).

B- 2 S/f flaxseed muffins, cantaloupe
L- 5 dolmades w/ tziki, c/c on pretzel thins (5)
D- chicken salad on Ritz crackers, watermelon

 but he's a little yellowed!

I notice making snackish food as my meal creeping up more now that kids are home for summer. The melon obsession is easing. I am pretty much able to have it as a meal now.
But I keep having those thin pretzel crisps with cream cheese. Even though I have a specified number, they give me a binge-feeling that I could possibly easily eat the whole bag. The girls like them but I'm not gonna keep buying them.

My parents did not give the slightest hint of obsessing over my college stuff. I"m eternally grateful that they paid for my last two years at UC Santa Cruz. I don't know if they fretted about it between them. But I was the first in my family to go, so they didn't know what it was all about. I wonder what they worried about?

Well for me, my daughter has been hospitalized for suicide attempts, sent to rehab for social anxiety/major depression and loads of self-harm, yet has now graduated a year early at a young 17 (and was valedictorian--though refused to participate in graduation).
Anyway it's a whole book on all the worries!

B- Protein bar, watermelon
L- 3 lean cuisine rolls w/ ranch, 1/2 plain baked potato
D- Tuna salad sandwich w/few ritz crackers

Having a slightly difficult sweet tooth day. yummy peanut butter/chocolate cupcakes my baking daughter made. She has them out on display on the counter and I am having to ignore them!

Very ladylike S day. I even had a very small sampling of ice cream. I really think I'm losing the obsession for it, it still didn't taste that great!

Had Mario's pizza for dinner. We haven't had it for a while and it was SOOOOO fantastic. Could've eaten more but didn't :)

B- Protein bar
L- salad and pizza at Cicis
D- Grilled cheese, hf chips, watermelon

Did pretty well at cicis , salad first, then 2 pieces. Pizza buffets are usually a disaster. And a very unusual dinner for me, but sounded good... Even dd was shocked that "that sandwich is for you??!"

Anyway not quite a green day because we're watching Beauty and the Beast as a family movie and I did have a handful of popcorn.
