Restarting and timing
Hi all, I’ve tried No S a handful of times and never really stuck with it- kept bouncing between this and weight watchers with some dabbling in calorie counting and “intuitive eating” - I feel like a crazy person. I’ve been back on ww for a few weeks but the feeling of restriction is frustrating. It’s a good program in terms of encouraging healthy foods but it really limits healthy fats too much in my opinion. I really only want to lose 5-10 pounds. I’m in no rush and not overweight. I’m a breast cancer survivor and on tamoxifen for a year now which I think is part of what has made me gain 12 pounds and my doc says I should avoid gaining 10 more due to the hormonal impact of added body fat and risk of recurrence . Given my health situation I like being on a plan that kind of forces me towards veggies and fruit which is why ww kept drawing me in. Plus it worked for me before, having lost my pregnancy weight on it. Ok I’m babbling. Bottom line is I feel crazy for mentally bouncing back and forth between plans and think I need to give no S another try because I SO resonate with the theory behind it and badly want to get peace with my eating and weight. I do have a big weeklong business travel obligation starting next weekend. Am I crazy to try to start no S now, before I leave, or should I hold off on transitioning until I get back home? I could have written this post myself! Well, except for the cancer.... Way to go on beating it! I know fighting breast cancer is a beast.
As far as waiting to start until after your trip, maybe let this week be a " practice week". Try to get in the habit, but don't beat yourself up. That's what I did this past week. I'm also wanting to get back to No s. My problem is always bouncing around. In the past few months, I've tried keto, calorie counting , 16:8 IF, slightly tried intuitive eating ....but that's not helpful telling me not to eat unless I'm hungry. Well, duh. If I knew how to do that, I Probably wouldn't be overweight.

Maggie Mae, thanks so much for your response! I think I’m going to give it a try like you say. It just feels like it’s time. I suppose I can designate S days on my business trip for the nights where there’s a big event or dinner- so I’m going to give that a try! I always gain like 5 pounds on these trips- usually bloat, but still discouraging- so if I come back having maintained it will be a success in my book.

Thanks! I have stuck with it so far- yesterday I had a struggle avoiding snacks but I made it through! Today is going a bit easier so far and I have been enjoying my meals a lot!

Thanks! Made it through travel day with group dinner in compliance, with some virtual plating, and a little more beer than I’d normally drink, but no sweets. Calling it a success. I have 2 S days coming up for Sunday and Monday so that’s a relief!

I think we were living the same life! I completely agree WW is too low in fat also, but love the focus on produce. I also love intuitive eating but can't make it work for weight loss and YES bouncing between plans is CRAZY making!
I am just starting No S again also after a few failed attempts and other plans mixed in over several years with little sucess. Good luck and thanks for posting what your are going through - it is comforting to know other people are having the same struggles.

Think of the first couple of months as the training wheel time. Give yourself more than the 21 days people often think is enough. Even if it takes longer, what's the alternative?

Thanks everyone for the support! April how interesting that you’ve been going through the same thing! It’s nice to not be alone- sometimes it can feel like I’m the only person out there constantly weighing options about what “eating program” is right- when really, why do I feel a pull to “follow a program” when it comes to something as simple as feeding myself?!

There are no slim cultures (where food is accessible) that don't to some degree have a "program" or cultural routines that limit their food intake. They instinctively know it can't be left to chance. Don't feel bad that you have to adopt at least some brakes. Only a small minority of people in the world have the constitution, left to their own devices, not to overeat. How do we know? Because as food availability has increased, average weights have gone up all over the world. Only war, famine, and cultural slim routines have held weight in check. (And even slim places without war or famine have had weight increases, though they were so low to start that they're still doing fine.)

To ride on Oolala's coattails, what makes eating such bear in our modern cultures is that there ARE no commonly understood rules. No structure, no shared food habits or patterns. No set eating times, locations, rituals, cooking styles, there's too much variety (!)
I think the final victory for NoS is that it provides us with the peace (and dare I say joy) that comes with having clear structures and boundaries around our intake, which allows us to experience greater fulfillment and thankfulness for the foods that we choose to eat and make a part of our daily routines.

Very good points from both of you! I grew up in a household of immigrants- I’m a first gen American- and these meal structures were very much part of my upbringing- I have just lost them along the way and followed more “American” eating patterns- and need to reconnect with the way I originally ate.

I think it's becoming nearly universal in the culture to believe that just about any time or place or position (standing and walking, etc.) is a viable time to eat. Individuals might not choose to eat, but it's rarely questioned, at least out loud. God forbid that you should imply that you would rather not have the exposure by limiting someone else's access.
