Long story made as short as possible...I found NoS about a year ago but wasn't ready to take the plunge yet, but it stuck in my memory.
Two days ago I had dinner with a friend I hadn't seen in over a year. She's had gastric bypass surgery and lost over 100 lbs. I was floored...not only by the fact that she'd never mentioned it in our sporadic email conversations, and not just by the fact that I'm now the fattest of all my friends (although that's a kick in the head). But mostly by the fact that this is a woman who had a 6-pack-a-day soda habit, lived on fast food, and has never exercised regularly in the 9 years that I've known her. Weight loss surgery was not a "last resort", but seems instead like a very drastic "quick fix".
At 5'3 and 240, my GP and GYN have both informed me that I'm a prime candidate for the surgery myself, but it's just not something I would ever consider until I felt I'd exhausted every other option. I've made a few half-hearted attempts over the years--weight watchers, slim-fast (yuck), South Beach...etc. I'd lose a few lbs. then get bored or frustrated or just plain hungry and quit. I recently joined a walking club and I love that, but I know that walking alone won't get the weight off if I continue to eat like an idiot. So here I am. Adding another S to the plan for myself: NO SURGERY. It's Friday so I only have to get through 1 day before an S day...that may be all I can manage at this point, but one day is one step forward, right?

Hi, Andi.
Welcome. My twin sister is 5'1'' and at her heaviest weighed 247 lbs. Fast forward two years and now she weighs about 150-155 lbs.
She has done this by walking during her lunch break at work and after dinner, riding her stationary bike while watching tv, and eating mostly fruits and vegetables (or as she says, "foods that come out of the ground"). I should add that during these two years there were and still are many days where she neither exercises nor eats anything near healthy and she still has her binge moments, but it is a process and a journey.
Most of her weight loss would come in spurts, then she'd gain a few pounds and then maintain, then she'd lose again, gain a few, maintain again, etc. You get the picture.
In any case, good luck and welcome aboard. I think you'll find No-S a doable and sane approach.

Welcome, KeegansMom.
No-s is more like wave action on the sea shore: powerful but slow.
Give it time and you'll achieve results as impressive as (and more satisfying and permanent than) surgery.
It'll take patience -- but you'll be waiting in a fantastic waiting room. Three meals is a very enjoyable way to eat.
