As I have followed these topics, I've seen a lot of one-liners/zingers that cut straight to the heart of what we're trying to do. Of course the first is Reinhard's original simple and straightforward eating plan with its fourteen little words and his S day advice as below:
"The No S Diet:
* No Snacks
* No Sweets
* No Seconds
Except (sometimes) on days that start with 'S' "
And certainly, his to-the-point admonishment about S days:
"Don't Be An Idiot"
However, I've seen a lot of other short but sweet zingers that address a specific issue or otherwise make a great point--in a nutshell.
When I read cfrbdm's daily check in page today I saw yet another one that is certainly good advice and food (ooh. . .) for thought:
"Enjoy without Excess"
So I tried to remember some of the others I've read but my mind is blank and I'm only remembering a couple as posted below. To those of you who have referenced a good phrase or have coined a great little one-liner that perpetuates this thing we're doing, please post it in this thread and we could have a little "glossary" of phrases to refer to. Include the "author" if you know it. I'm guessing that a lot of phrases have been tossed around and we may not know who said it first. And I don't want to be accused of plagiarism!
I'm hoping to get a string of these phrases so that I can create a little document--maybe a screen saver with the quotes that randomly pop up or make some "business cards" that could be something to put by my computer at work to inspire me. Another thought would be to make a "pocketmod" of my favorites. I'm all about gimmicky reminders to help me stay focused. I already saved the red and black No S Logo as a pic and have it as my main screen on my cell phone. Every time I open the phone, I see it staring straight at me! And since I'm always on my cell, it's a great reminder!

OK-so sometime in the last 24 hours, I could have sworn I saw a great little line that encapulated the idea of "the easiest way to work off that indulgence (or something like that?) is to not put it in your mouth to begin with."
I know that's not the right wording and I can't find it anywhere. Maybe it wasn't on these boards, but was in a link that someone posted? Anyway, if anyone remembers seeing this, please let me know where it was or what it said. It would be a good addition to my glossary I'm trying to put together!

That's a really good one. I think I've seen it before. . . now to remember that when I'm looking right at that last piece of key lime pie in the fridge--yes, my spouse has been at it again! But I had my share during the weekend so I'm hanging strong!

I have heard the phrase "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." But that is not true for me. If I am looking at something delicious (usually it is sweet), sometimes I want it more than I want to be skinny. Much easier now to simply wait a few days until it is time for whatever!

I think that one will help when something stressful or unusual (doesn't even have to be STRESSFUL) happens at work and I see a colleague's big jar of snacksize candy bars. . . when did I ever have just one!?

Regarding IDEAL WEIGHT. . .
Reinhard: I don't think there is much point in having an ideal weight. Have ideal behavior -- habits of moderate eating and exertion. Whatever you weigh then is ideal.

How about the idea of having an S event rather than an S day...so if there is a wedding shower in the evening, the bulk of the day is a normal N day, but at the shower you will have some punch or a slice of cake. Learning to enjoy occasional small indulgences is truly an art!

GREEN_Equals_Two_R_Less_S_Slips: My way of keeping track of little slips (ok-failures!) of the strictness of the diet--but so I can note whether this was a biggie or just one extra helping of one item and one healthy type snack, perhaps. . . I give myself a RED if my slip-ups were more massive!
At least by doing it by HabitCal, it's quick to record and a great visual version of my progress. And it tells a more complete story.
Now that reminds me, I need to update my HabitCals--so later!

I have to tell you how happy I am to have found you all and this diet!
Finally a system I can stick to! I actually feel FREE for the first time. I don't think "Oh I have to go on a diet tomorrow" and then end up eating all the stuff I think I can't have, today, before I have to diet tomorrow. Because I can eat whatever I want (except Ss) every day. Wow, talk about a pleasure. No more guilt and no more binge eating. I am discovering the joy of moderate eating.
I am really happy. And confident. I know I can do this. For me this is the most sensible thing going. Cut through so much of my food neurosis.
Finally a system I can stick to! I actually feel FREE for the first time. I don't think "Oh I have to go on a diet tomorrow" and then end up eating all the stuff I think I can't have, today, before I have to diet tomorrow. Because I can eat whatever I want (except Ss) every day. Wow, talk about a pleasure. No more guilt and no more binge eating. I am discovering the joy of moderate eating.

Let me guess---
Jammin' Jan, are you referencing the old TV series "The Prisoner" and one of its episodes? My hubby has long loved that old series created by and starring Patrick McGoohan that aired in 1967-68. I remember you commented in your daily check-in recently about enjoying watching it.
I think it's out on DVD now. Maybe I should put it on my holiday list! Thanks for this double reminder!

I've noticed if I set a phrase or line as a color, then change another word within that part to another color, the original colors remain instead. It is kind of tricky. . .but play with it a little and you'll get the hang of it.

I don't think it means you have to eat plain food, but that you shouldn't be fooled by taste INSTEAD of hunger.

Exactly--I had just read that post again and copied it to add to this thread when I saw BA beat me to it. Somehow I'd missed seeing that.
I think that is a huge "revelation." There's a line from a favorite play of mine, Greater Tuna, a hilarious look at life in a small Texas town that Burlsgirl's comment reminds me of. . .The coach is explaining why his team lost. He says something like "Well, if we could have put some more points on the board and they hadn't made so many touchdowns, I think the outcome would have been a lot different! Uh, huh."
Gee, if we'd put less stuff in our mouths and move a little more, we'd have this thing whipped. Oh, yeah, that's what Reinhard's trying to tell us!

I just wanted to say thanks for "That was good, but I've had enough" as I was able to implement it yesterday at the diner when we went out to celebrate after my Son's concert.
My mother treated us to a dinner special, which includes salad, and dessert and side dishes etc...
I found myself eating half of each of these side dishes and sharing them with my Son, and leaving some.. When it came to dessert, I was pretty sated but couldn't resist having some fresh rice pudding with whipped cream.. But after about 2/3rds of it, I said *aloud* "That was good, but I've had enough"...
I could feel that if I didn't I would have definitely overeaten and polished it off just cos it was there.
I know it's only about 1/3 of a cup of rice pudding, but it was the act of stopping myself once I realised I had really had enough and yet was still picking up the spoon to continue eating the rest..
Thanks a lot for that phrase!
I will be using it anytime I'm up against over eating or sweeting.

On a thread before vacation, I said that I would allow some treats, but only special things, unique to the area.
Mimi said that line belonged here - and after vacation, I decided she was right. Asking "is this S-worthy?" really kept me in check. There's an amazing amount of stuff that just ISN'T, lol!An S-worthy treat. Sometimes.
(Aside: this reminds me a little of Elaine on Seinfeld talking about "sponge-worthy" dates, which amuses me.)

Funny story:
A parent I know used a really creative excuse not to buy her toddler daughter different things she wanted in the store. When the little girl would ask for a doll, or a fancy cupcake, the parent would say sadly, "honey, those are just for decoration" - which the child would accept unquestioningly. (A total lie of course, but she felt it much better than trying to explain family economic choices to a toddler... and much better than dealing with a tantrum.)
Now, I'm not necessarily advocating lying as a parenting strategy... but I have noticed that I now regard a lot of food-like products as the equivalent of "just for decoration" - stuff that's not really for eating, that's outside of the bounds of real choice. Vending machines fall into that category - lots of pretty colors, nothing there to eat.

When I reach for that one piece of candy, thinking "What's one bite sized snickers in the grand scheme of things?" that quote brings me back to the fact that I need to stay focused on No-S. Because while that one piece of candy might not add enough calories or fat or whatever to make any difference, it's a break in the chain of making No-S habits, and that thought is usually enough to keep me away from the candy for long enough to get distracted by something else.

I love "nothing worthwhile is ever easy"-- by far the hardest part of No S is the slow pace. I found one in a book Reinhard recommended, Mindless Eating:
Out of sight, out of mind. (For snacks, sweets, and seconds tempting you on N days).
And, as someone who struggled especially with snacking forced himself to say out loud:
