Tobiasmom's Year...2017

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Tobiasmom's Year...2017

Post by tobiasmom » Sun Jan 01, 2017 2:48 am

Well, here I am again. I have set up a new thread and am ready for all 2017 has to offer. I cancelled my Weight Watchers membership. I just got blood work that showed I am normal so no need for any drastic diets I can't stick to anyway. My goal this year is to stick to No-S the whole year and stay off my blood pressure meds. I took myself off of them two weeks ago because they were causing horrible side effects after all these years of use. I know I can stay off them with exercise and moderation. I'd love to lose some weight this year too....but that's not going to be my focus. Habit is my focus this year. Habit habit habit!!!

Same here, Tobiasmom! And I think you have a powerful motivation in wanting to get and stay off those meds that cause you so much trouble. You can do this!

1/1: S DAY. A bit wild in the afternoon and evening but pretty good the first half of the day.
1/2: RED. I'm not gonna lie...started out my first N day with diet head and tried eating low carb. Blech. That ended with some soda at dinner and a little ice cream. &#128584; It's gonna take me some time to get this. And I'm willing to take the time to learn....

Yeah, experimenting with what goes on the plate will come in due time.

Are you marking habitcal, BTW? Not necessary. Just curious.

1/3: GREEN! So happy with this one. I haven't committed and stuck to much of anything for one full day in quite a while!!
B: spaghetti with marinara and mushrooms (leftovers from night before)
L: cheese ravioli and salad greens with ranch
D: salmon, black beans and corn

Strange to have pasta for breakfast and lunch in a day....but that's what I had available to me today. This afternoon we went bowling and I enjoyed a black cup of coffee while the family ate fries. Feeling so great about that choice! One promise to myself kept. That's what I am really working on. Keeping promises I make to myself. My main promise is that I will not
follow any other diets for the year. Another promise is 3 plates. 3
plates of enjoyable normal food.

I'm tired this evening. The lack of sugar is noticeable...but soooo good for me!!

1/4 Wednesday: RED &#128580;&#128556;
I didn't eat enough breakfast cuz I was on the run but really hungry after my early morning swim. This led to a snack which then led to a sweet...and now I am just holding on for dear life until dinnertime to eat a full Normal plate and move forward. No more all or nothing. So I had toast and nuts with a cookie. Big whoop. I don't need to eat all day and wait for tomorrow! This is a learning process. I will figure out a way to eat a full plate of breakfast next time so that I'm not left tempted to splurge. I know that's a weakness of mine so I've gotta nip that right away.
Good news is that I swam laps again this morning!

Good for you on getting your swimming in and don't be too harsh on yourself for a red day - it took me months to figure out how to eat around my yoga class and I'm sure you'll figure out what kind of breakfast you need to sustain you through swimming (which does seem to create extra hunger, in my opinion). Hang in there and do your best today!

Well handled wrench! (no WTH)

I may be preaching reckless driving behavior, but if I get rushed, I find that I can eat more food (and slowly) in the morning in the car. I don't do it all the time, but only when rushed. I will take good hunk of cheese or a few spoons of nuts and an apple and/or bread, all foods that I can pick up. It's not ideal, but neither is wolfing nor eating too little (which is a much later skill).

Just an idea. You've got options!

1/5, Thursday, and 1/6, Friday: RED

So just one Green Day last week. Not great...but I will strive for better this week. I have a full year to really navigate this plan. My biggest struggle? The afternoons. I get snacky and I convince myself I should maybe count points instead... &#128553;&#128553;&#128553;&#128584;. Then the downfall continues....

Keep focusing on what you did well, and give yourself time to tackle the most difficult moment. It's probably going to take some trial and error to find what works. Also, excellent Oolala advice for really difficult moments on a recent comment on this check in thread:https://everydaysystems.com/bb/viewtopi ... 287#177287

Another thing you can do when you are having a rough day is to remember how great it feels when you make the choice to stay on plan. Think about what you could drink instead of having a snack in those afternoon times--plan ahead for those times since you know they will come often--then you'll have a good strategy in place. You can build on the great choice you made and help yourself make more good choices.

Afternoons are the most difficult time for me as well!! Right when I get home from work I want to snack!! Today I plan on going into it with my eyes wide open fully aware that the urge to snack will be there! Instead of snacking I will get myself big ole glass of ice water and sit down.and read a bit of my No S book before I tackle home chores. I need some time to wind down after my day and I associate relaxing with food. Sigh.... Gotta change that. Still.have that wind down time without the food!.And, I will also think about reporting back here green. We've got this!!.&#128512;

1/7, Saturday: S DAY
1/8, Sunday: S DAY
Both S days involved junk and overeating. &#128541;

1/9, Monday: So far so good....
B: two banana oat muffins (no sugar), coffee
L: small salad, two pieces of toast w butter, part of a protein shake that was gross so I tossed it
D: the plan is BBQ chicken, corn on the cob, baked beans
Exercise: swam 30 minutes this morning. Working my way up to 20 laps right now.

A friend is trying to convince me to do Whole 30. I'm not a huge meat fan so I don't think so. Either way I am sticking with my three plates and trying not to overthink it.

Well done on your swimming! It took me a while to build up to 20 laps, too, and then about half a year (of swimming about once a week) to get up to 40.

Hope you ended the day on a green note!

Consider telling your friend gently that you're pleased with your plan and will reconsider joining her on it six months from now, if you're not still pleased. Odds are she will have gone through the honeymoon and divorce by then.

After some reading on here, I realize that I'm still super obsessed with reading up on this diet and writing what I eat, weighing, et cetera. To try to alleviate this I am going to come check in monthly and only weigh myself monthly. I want to try to just focus on three plates of food and not write down what is in it or whether I was green or red or whatever. Just focus on habit.

So I will see ya'll 2/1 for my monthly check-in. I have had mostly red days this week. Too much obsessing about what I should or shouldn't be doing. Just gonna stop thinking...haha.....and eat my plates. I love this plan...and I know it's the key to healing my obsessive and very dysfunctional relationship with dieting and food in general. Even though it is super uncomfortable, I am going to detach from all my obsessive behavior as much as I can. Imagine the time I will have! ha.

Monthly weigh-in: 225 (stayed the same). Total loss since 1/1: 5 pounds

I had quite a few red days this month so I will say maintaining the five pounds I lost last month is awesome. My goal this month is to keep going and try to have less red. I turn 40 this month so there will be a few celebration days for sure. &#128077;&#128077;&#128077;

Well, I had my 40th birthday two weeks ago ...and For two weeks I have been red!! Two weeks of birthday celebrations! No reason I couldn't eat green during the week and celebrate during the weekend. Oh, well. I only turn 40 once. Moving on.

I'm hoping to finish out the month strong, though! &#128077;

Happy Birthday! (Plan now how to celebrate 45 some way other than reds  )

Only six chances to be green in March left! You won't be sorry, if you hold out. Let's hope it will feel so good that you'll want to just keep going.

So I was up 3 pounds for March. There's no surprise why. I was pretty red this month with lots of celebrating and a side of maybe I should do this diet or that.

April is a new month. I am going to stick to the basics and keep going. This "diet" has NO end so however long it takes me to get this is what it's going to take.

I think I am going to try for a 21-day challenge to make the habit and journal my meals. That seems to have helped in my past attempts with No-S to keep me a little more focused. No calorie counting or anything diet-y. Just recording three plates of yummy food and probably also S days for a while.

I gently suggest you also make a list of the benefits, especially in well-being, you'll get from truly surrendering to this lifestyle. What unpleasantness in your life are you putting up with to keep your old habits? I think Reinhard had intrinsic investments that he may not have even known were motivations that helped as much as the bright lines and habitcal. Those green days then subconsciously reinforced those other motivations. We average Janes may need to make it more explicit.

That is, if I haven't said this before and you haven't done it.

It made a huge difference for me back in 2010.

You might even consider making a habitcal just for reading your motivations.

Day 1

Post by tobiasmom » Mon May 22, 2017 6:27 pm

I know I said it last month, but I think tracking the meals/habit for 21 days might help me with less red. So here it goes...

Sunday:
B: bagel with peanut butter, coffee with cream and collagen
S: old-fashioned donut
L: garlic bread, Pringles
D: vegetarian chicken patty sandwich, tater tots
S: vanilla pudding
Activity: 225 stairs
(In one month I am taking my hubby up Koko Head here in Hawaii for his birthday. It is 1,000 stairs. &#128553; So I am adding my stairs each day
To train so I don't die on his birthday! &#128540;&#128540;)
I'd also like to get back to swimming, but the pool here on base has been broken for four months!!!

I read years ago that a person could train for a race by consistently practicing at only one-third the distance. that might be a little conservative for stairs.

Do you break it up into parts or do the whole 270 at one time?

You'll be doing 27 flights. Dang! You are getting conDItioned, girl! They say stair climbing is one of the fastest ways to get there. You have a lot of patience to keep going up and down. BTW, many building codes in commercial buildings say there is a limit to the number of stairs before a landing, meaning they recognize that most people need some kind of break. I guess for you that's going down.

This is making me think I should be willing to go out to the block that leads to my house- it's an incline- and just walk up and down it multiple times. Not quite as convenient as being inside the house- I'd have to actually get dressed for public viewing- but pretty close, if I'm willing to just do the same street repeatedly.

BTW, when I looked up how many steps are in an average flight, it mentioned that the longest stairway in the world is over 11,000 steps. http://www.odditycentral.com/travel/run ... -race.html

Good work on doing steps, I'm sure you'll be okay. That would kill my knee at this point. One of our favorite places to hike when dating was a place called 500 steps at Gov. Dick park in the South mountains near Mt. Gretna, Pa. Of course we were still teenagers.

Ironically, I met up with a friend in Los Angeles in a hilly neighborhood with several sets of stairs. Between the stairs and walking around to find them we climbed the equivalent of 14 floors and a distance of 2.4 miles. I think the longest set was about 200 steps. We saw women doing that set multiple times.(I guess the men were all in the salt mines.)

Do whatever you can to answer those rationalizations to eat S's on N days that come up. The brain will say anything to preserve the habit. It thinks it is protecting you, but it's not. It's preventing you from going through the very natural process of having food be limited and allowing the body to draw down its reserves from previous overeating. THAT is what you don't want to be deprived of!

Monthly Weight

Post by tobiasmom » Sat Jul 01, 2017 5:50 pm

July 1st Weigh-in: 227
So for the first six months of the year I am only down 3 pounds. I actually gained a couple pounds this month. This is a result of not really following No-S alone. I have jumped back and forth numerous times each week to different plans along with my normal snacking and binging at times. I am committed to this process. I know I am gonna get this. However long it takes....I know I can maintain this lifestyle so I am going to do my best to really make it happen. No quitting.

Do the different plans call for eating more frequently?

It can be shocking how little food we can eat if we want to lose, especially shorter women, and those who have been heavier and ever lost. I am not actively trying to lose but I used a calculator on Brightangel's site and found I would have to AVERAGE only 900 calories a day if I wanted to lose a pound a week, and I wouldn't be able to eat a lot more than that if I didn't want to gain it all back.

You will be so happy you gave it your all for a few months at least. It's the only way to know or be reminded of what the plan can net for you, and what mods would be legitimate.

Here's to a mostly green July!

Well...

Post by tobiasmom » Sat Sep 02, 2017 5:27 pm

I have been back and forth on this site for years and years now. I just read my daily journal from 2013....and it's a bit heart-breaking. I was really in a groove and seeing success and feeling the freedom of No-S. I was even losing weight. I was about 35 pounds less than I am now. What happened? Diets. This is what happens to me for at least the past 20 years. I jump diet to diet...and I just can't stick to any of them long-term. On the No-S FB page it was mentioned why follow anything you can't/won't stick to for life? Well, that's really where I am right now. The problem is that I really do need to lose weight and I get impatient...like a lot of people. But my impatience puts the pounds on continuously.

So I'm going back to what has worked in the past. Journaling my three plates here for accountability, getting in some good exercise, and most of all continuing on even when I fail or don't see what I want on the scale. My reason that I need to focus on is that I've never really stuck with anything else and I don't want to cut huge food groups. I want to enjoy life and quit this diet obsession once and for all. I have definitely said that numerous times before, but after looking at my journals on here I see more clearly my pattern....and I know I can overcome this!!!

I had committed to a year. Well, I really need to commit to a life - completely changing my lifestyle to make this my only option and not searching for another way that I know is unhealthy for me emotionally. But let's start with 21 days! 😜

TM, I hope it's okay for me to say: there's only one way to prove that you NEED to lose weight, and that is to behave in a way that brings weight loss. You can't know if Vanilla No S will really be the solution until you do it consistently for several months. You may have to mod, but how can you know if you don't get a baseline first?

Otherwise, you're just using a scare tactic to try to get yourself to eat less, but you are really chipping away at your spirit when you say you need something but don't follow through. It would be better to say, I guess I need the comfort of my overeating habits more than I need to lose weight right now. Not to shame yourself but to really see it. (This is not to say that heavy people can all live a life that would make them really thin. But if they're consistent overeating refined foods and modern fats. it's not really honest to themselves to say they NEED to lose weight, and that's who gets hurt.)

My apologies if this is too plain speaking.

I've watched you for years and wished so much for you to find your groove. It seems to me you have plenty of incentive. Isn't there something that would be worth the sacrifice for? Something you want more than the food but haven't really recognized it? Unless a person lucks out with an eating program that easily fits, not having something more important than the habit of giving in is hard. In my case, it was that I saw that I would eat that way and probably worse for the rest of my life and I wasn't willing to live with that anymore. I have fewer decades left than I've already lived. Forty years of battling eating HAD to be enough! I'm fumbling now, but I don't think I"m heading to the kind of destruction I was living in before. Now, I just do it with non-eating areas.

Hang in there Tobias! My relationship with NoS hasn't been perfect but I've stuck to it more or less for a few years. I ended up losing 40 lbs but my weight is currently up several pounds. It sucks but what's scariest to me is that I know if I hadn't stuck with NoS all this time, I would have gained back all the weight plus some.

I'm grateful to NoS because it keeps me anchored. I know as long as I stick to it all the weight will never come back and these pounds Ive gained back will eventually fall off again. In my 40 years of dieting, I've found nothing else that keeps me this sane and allows my weight be so stable.

You really need to take a bit of leap of faith here and be all in. At least long enough to feel the benefits. Even if you don't lose a single pound, I believe it's worth it. Now what other diet can you possibly say that about?

Best of luck!
Linda :)

Thanks, Ladies. You are both so right. Just commit. Eyes fixed forward and stay in my own lane.

Saturday S Day
B: cinnamon coffee cake/coffee
L: vegan lumpia/rice noodles
D: pulled pork nachos/1 soda
S: ice cream sandwich

We bowled five games on our date...but I'd like to start getting back to daily walking again. I had way too much salt yesterday and feel it this morning. My mind was already going toward diethead knowing I had quite a bit of food yesterday. But as you ladies said...the thought of sticking to anything else long-term is downright painful! I plan to stay off the scale until next month so I can work on habit. I have to try to break the daily scale thing right now for sure.

The good news is that I have been "doing" NO-S all week. The bad news is that I have had a string of red. But that doesn't mean today can't be green!!!! I am slightly paralyzed by a few weeks of anxiety. I have only gotten this more and more as I have gotten older. I think this attributes hugely to my snacking/sweets/sitting on the couch/internet searching for a new diet. Just realizing this is huge. I can now take the time to work through this. I would never in a million years call myself a depressed person. But I am realizing that I do struggle with anxiety and depression. How can someone just not see that in themselves? I guess I just have always seen depression as laying in bed and not functioning. But I am realizing that isn't it at all. This self-sabotage and negative thoughts and overwhelming anxiety....has contributed to years and years of disordered eating.

I'm not quite sure where to start to work through this, but getting outside for a walk each day and sticking with three plates a day and maybe journaling my feelings sound like a good start!!!

I wrote a long post but just decided to simply reinforce what you said. Make the good start but make the three plates a day GOSPEL. It is the one thing you can absolutely do every day. Put non-sweet food on a plate and eat it. Let nothing stop you. There is no feeling, urge, bodily sensation, or thought important enough to sway you. You will go through ANYTHING rather than take the food morphine. NO discomfort is great enough to warrant giving up the freedom from this bondage to random overeating.

You cannot control what thoughts arise and often not even what bodily sensations of discomfort arise in response to them, nor the desire for food. But you can absolutely control whether you pick food up and put it in your mouth or not. No sensation, emotion, or thought can actually do that action.

Hi, just want to stop in to say, "I hear ya"! I just recently realized that even as little as one glass of alcohol increases my anxiety in the following 24 hours. How could I have never noticed that before? I don't know, but I'm glad I noticed it now and I'm glad you're working through your anxiety. Best of luck to you,

Kind regards,

L: cheetohs, Sprite
D: two slices pizza

Too many chips today and I can barely eat them. My tooth has gotten so so bad. I need a root canal, but they can't do it until next Tuesday. So I comfort ate a bit yesterday....and I ate stuff I can't even chew! Crazy! The dentist gave me some pain meds and antibiotics. Hopefully I can eat soft foods...only three plates...the rest of the week.

Hoo, boy, I've a had quite a few root canals. I'm SO grateful there are people who know how to fix the problem. I've read that the Inuits didn't get tooth decay until the settlers brought sugar and flour. They had no idea how to handle the pain and were known to commit suicide because it just didn't go away. An old boyfriend had a theory that pain closer to your brain feels more threatening. Hurry up, Tuesday!

List

Post by tobiasmom » Tue Oct 31, 2017 12:35 am

Reasons No-S works for me:
- moderate moderate moderate!
- no counting things
- no tracking
- no food off limits permanently
- socially appropriate
- healthy for my kids too
- a lifestyle change
- produces health slowly but surely
- not an all-or-nothing approach
- I don't have to eat tons of meat or NO carbs.
- treats in moderate amounts instead of completely off limits
- no gross artificial sweeteners if I don't want to
- works with any style of eating
- I am way less grumpy 😛
- It DOES work....just not in one week! ðŸ˜

I committed to No-S for 2017 and mostly fell into my same trap all year off and on. I will never quit trying, though. I'm back at it and plan to finish off the year strong and just keep going.....indefinitely! Thanks for being patient with me, Friends. It's probably so so sooooo frustrating to keep seeing me do this to myself. I know it frustrates me!! But I am going to keep forgiving muself and keep trying!!!

Welcome back!

Just to ponder: is there anything that you really want that you can't get if you keep falling off the wagon? What would make it worth to just flat out tolerate ANY reason to eat outside Vanilla without eating? (Answering these questions really honestly were pivotal for me, so I'm projecting. I f they don't resonate, just ignore them.

Oolala: I have been pondering your questions.... the obvious answer is health/weight loss. That's what I THiNK I really want. But the truth is that deep down what I really want is a healthy relationship with food. My view of food is so distorted and changes based on what I read or who I talk to. I deep down truly believe a healthy, somewhat normal relationship with food, will only be accomplished with this type of eating. So what can I NOT accomplish if I keep falling off the NO-S wagon????? Food sanity! A normal relationship with food. I don't think that can ever be accomplished with any other eating style I have tried. I can't imagine sticking with ANY of them for life.

The one thing I "get" from these other diets, besides quick weight loss that is unsustainable, is this identity...I play into the lie that I am THE Dieter. When I eat normal food and don't focus on whatever new diet....it's like my life doesn't have a purpose. If I'm not trying to do something new all the time I feel "left out". I know this sounds absolutely insane. I have identified with all these crazes for so many years that being a normal eater just sounds/feels foreign! It sounds almost boring. Ha. 🙈 I want to be boring!!! Deep down I truly want to stop the cycle. I have some deep rooted issues that DO need to be dealt with. I don't like to go there. But I need to. And I need a totally new identity, honestly. I can't be THE Dieter anymore.

I don't quite understand your second question. But thank you so much for how much you care for all of us and try to help people like me out of this mental prison!!

So I made it two days green this week so far! I am really trying to just focus on three plates and nothing else.

Oolala: I got your email, and there's so much good stuff in there to really think about. I thank you so much for your input! 😀

Another Green Day today! The best part is we are doing it completely as a family this time. My 4-year-old, 9-year-old, and the hubby have been green all week too. And that's saying a lot!!! They are huge snackers. As a result, my little one is eating all his food at meals and my older one is eating less food during the day, which are both huge wins!! I am so hopeful that as a family we can attain a more normal relationship with food. They sure are looking forward to some S day treats this weekend!!

Green today! And this one was hard-earned!

So basically I had a small furry plant/fungus growing in my ear a few months ago from the ocean here in Hawaii! 😂😂. Well, they cleaned it out real well and gave me drops, but it has been bothering me still. This week has been pretty rough, but yesterday it was killing me and today I woke up and couldn't hear out of it at all. I made a quick appointment today, and it turns out I have a very severe inner and outer ear infection now with major fluid underneath the regrown plant! Ha. He said it's so swollen and infected that it is like a pinched straw in there. 🙈🙈🙈. So thankfully I got some steroids and antibiotics.....but the pills are sooooo hard on my stomach...especially with trying to stick with three plates. I did take them with milk, but tomorrow I will space them out to be at each meal and see if it helps my poor tummy!!

My normal reaction would be to make this a free-for-all day and just eat my pain. But not today! Not anymore! There's no excuses to go outside the fence! I am keeping that "fence around the law." The kids also were green today...but not hubby! 😂😂😂😂😂

Hi!! It's me! Your long lost "stuck in this mental muck" friend! I have never verbalized what you have said above, but I definitely FEEL it!! Mine is more though if I am not thinking about it what will I think about?! I am constantly reading and searching articles....even when I am actually "doing" nothing. I hesitate leaving ww totally because I enjoy reading their boards and going to the meetings. The boards are so active because there are so many folks doing it and it is somewhat complicated....so, there is a lot to talk about. The boards here are much quieter because frankly, there is not much to talk about because it is so simple....which is what I want!!!! BUT, when all the other hub bub is gone I miss it. I know...weird huh?!

Good luck with the green yucky in your ear....OUCH!!!!! And congrats on your string of green days!! GO!!

Friday weigh-in: 226.4 (-3.2 pounds)

ZippaDee: I completely understand what you're saying. What you expressed is the exact truth. I enjoy reading the weight loss successes and problems and all of that too. BUT I do have a life. I could get so much more done with all this mental energy I give away. If it actually helped me follow these plans, then it would be useful. But the opposite happens. It's like I spend my whole life watching other people lose weight while I standby and watch.

I have a friend that just texted me that she lost 12.5 pounds this week doing low carb. I know deep down it works well for her and it is most definitely not right for this non-meat lover. But the brain just gets going with thoughts. Of course I ate like a normal person this week and lost 3.2 pounds so that helps a lot...but I have got to keep my hopes off the scale because I know it won't matter five years down the road when I'm still eating normal and just living my life. That's where I WANT to be! But this full-time Dieter status has gotta go!!

I don't count losing 12.5 pounds in a week working for anybody. If she's not doing it two years from now, maintaining the habit if not the loss, it's not working. You can't know in a week what's working! Yeah, that's my bias but it's served me well, and the short term has failed over 95% of those who use it.

What others might call working, I call doable for now.

So there.

Oh my goodness, I want to lose weight, but not 12.5 pounds in one week!

I just started the 16/8 fasting, and my scale is telling me I've lost a pound a day doing that. Obviously, that is not how it is going to work beyond the first few days and I'm not going to rush out and tell my friends to do 16/8 because they'll lose a pound a day. If it were that easy, we'd all be skinny!

The other issue to me is what %age of a person's weight is the loss? A 300-lb. person losing 12 lbs. of water in a week from low carb sounds about right. I'd be surprised if she didn't lose that, since protein and fat on their own are dehydrators, in essence.

Nothing else to do but eat our meals and keep going.

Friday ended up another green!!! The kids and hubby had a cookie grandma sent, but I stayed green. Overall I call their lack of snacking this week a success! I wanted to say about my friend that lost 12.5 pounds last week...she does have quite a bit to lose and she struggles with diet hopping just like me. She in no way portrayed low carb as THE way. I was just saying that when I heard about that huge loss my mind started trying to run with it. She is a very great friend....and I know this journey is individual. What works for her doesn't work for me necessarily. I had a great no-S week this week and am trying desperately to stay in my own lane! Planning for a very sane S day today hopefully. No real plans today. Tomorrow I have a birthday party and a baptism so those will be more food-related events.

Big kudos on Friday being green! I didn't mean to criticize your friend. I hope you didn't think that was my intent. It's often said that everyone's different but that is only partially true. The statistics of failure on dieting have been the same for 150 years. Unless someone chooses a way that can be a lifestyle that doesn't demand that they live extremely differently from their social contacts and all else that their life offers them, including holidays, birthdays, etc, most people are the same; regainers. Low carb actually has a little higher success rate of people being able to reintroduce more variety of foods with LESS (not zero) weight gain, but we're still talking about a very small number of people in the grand scheme of things.

That being said, I hope both of you win at this lottery! Feeling that you really don't want to keep living the eating life that got you in trouble and thinking your plan sounds like the absolutely best option that keeps you from having "affairs" before you really decide to get a "divorce," if ever, does up your odds.

Pretty sane S days. But today ended up RED for no reason other than laziness. I was watching tennis tonight, and time got away from me...and I didn't end up making dinner. So we had a snacky dinner, which unfortunately included a little Halloween candy! 😳😵. Onward!

Man! A second red day yesterday. Today it is back to the basics of three plates, period. I feel so much better when I don't snack. The holiday time is tough for me, but I am just going to focus on one green at a time.

My mom is coming to Hawaii for a visit in less than a week. She will be here for a couple months. She is very judgmental about my weight so that has definitely been on my mind lately. It's like I stress because I know she is going to say stuff, but it only ends up in me taking my focus off my goal and eating worse. Such a vicious cycle that's gone on for years. The honest REALITY is that I am a wonderful daughter with a huge heart and I work hard to homeschool my two boys and live this busy military life. I am sooooo much more than my outside appearance. And if she doesn't see that, there's not much I can do to change that. I need to get these healthy habits with food in place for ME. My outward appearance is a result of some deep rooted pain from the past followed by continuous bad habits for years on end. Everyone has junk. Mine just happens to show on the outside. Instead of working so hard on the number on the scale, I really truly need to do the internal/emotional/mental work. That starts with my mom. There's so much there I've just gotta let go. Hopefully these next couple months will be healing for me!!!

Wow...sorry to get all emotional here. Didn't see that one coming!!

No problem, we're pretty good at listening  Mom/parent stuff can be unbelievably stressful. Hopefully, you can spend the next couple weeks getting firmly in the no-s groove before she arrives. I know it won't be perfect but it might help you stay the course after she arrives.

I recently read a quote by Jame Clear that went something along the lines of "It doesn't matter if forming a new habit takes 50 days or 500 days. You still have to show up and do the work each and every day." Since I've read it, I've asked myself a hundred times a day - "is this snack/cookie/donut/candy/etc helping me to do the work? If not, why am I eating it?" It's a bit mysterious why that's helpful to me but it is. I hope it's helpful to you as well.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks, GingerPie! Ya...I definitely haven't been doing THE WORK this week. Yesterday I was out with a friend and could have resisted the cookie...but I didn't. I don't know who I think I'm fooling. Only myself. I felt so good last week with all those greens and actually feeling hungry at my meals. I will get this! 30 years of horrible habits won't change in a week! I'm sorry your mom is that way. Can you turn it around in your mind and have some pity for her, that she is judgemental? She clearly has a hole in her life that causes her to want to control your appearance. That's too bad, but it does not reflect on you at all!

When she makes the comment, can you think, "that's sad for her", and change the subject? "Be that as it may, mom, I still think we should go visit Aunt Mary while you are here." "Yes, you've said that. But I don't want to talk about that on this visit." Or "Let's just let that be, Mom." If you keep it matter of fact, and she can't get a reaction, she may drop it.

I know this will sound like an impossibility, but you absolutely have the right to tell your mother that she does not have permission to criticize your weight or your eating. Ever. This is just too fraught an issue to allow just anyone to comment on. If she has nothing nice to say, she can't say anything at all. Unless you ask. (Don't ask!) It is a very bad habit our whole society has gotten in to. But it also means that she cannot be a sounding board for your concerns about it. No chastising yourself for your eating or your weight or how hard it is to find something that fits, etc. in front of her. Share it with us! And let us tell you to let it go.

Boy, am I bossy or what?

My mother wasn't really that bad but I was more sensitive in my 30's. She came to visit me one time, and was making comments on how to clean my cabinets (unasked) or something, and I said, "Mom, you know, sometimes I feel like nothing I do is good enough for you. " She got very quiet and said she understood, but she also said, "Okay, then, I also want you to stop criticizing your brother and the fact that he lives with us." She kept her end of the bargain better than I did, though in my defense she rarely came to see me, so didn't have much fodder, whereas I did visit them, and he was often very unpleasant with me.

Well, my mom is here, and everything has been good. She hasn't said a word. She is having a lot of her own personal problems so her focus on my issues is non-existent!

This past few weeks have been red red red. All kinds of sugar and snacking. I felt so much better after that one green week. I really want to get back in the groove of that. So today, Black Friday, is an N day and I will focus on three plates and no leftover dessert today. I also want to start getting a daily walk in.

Go back and really remember in detail how pleasant it was to live that green week. Remember the comfort in your body and how good you probably felt at the end of each day. Decide: is there anything that's worth giving that up for? Would I be willing to be uncomfortable at times to get that feeling? Are there any sweets or snacks that are worth giving that up for? Remember, too, how cruddy if feels later when you fail, what you are giving up. Not weight loss, in my mind, but you miss out on knowing what it feels like to live with no food for several hours at a time. How can you know if that is something worthwhile if you don't give yourself a chance to live it for a decent stretch? Can you afford to wait until it just somehow happens on its own? Even then, it might not stick because it would come about for probably temporary reasons, and you would still have to learn to manage the return of the desires.

The only way to show what is worth more is to do it. Try to be honest and not critical about it. If you still eat the sweets or snacks, it is more important to you to not have to battle the habit. If that's true, so be it. If it is worth it, you will face down those desires even when they are very uncomfortable. But you can help yourself get to the point at which it's worth it by cultivating a rational attitude about the cost and benefits and becoming willing to get through the tough times to get that benefits.

You CAN do this!

Yesterday was a NWS day for me. It was both of my boys' birthdays. Tobias turned 10, and Lincoln turned 5. We had an awesome day...filled with Donuts, Chuck E Cheese, Toys R Us, and lemon bundt cake! 😛😛
Today I'm focusing on three plates. And a walk sometime today.

Well, it seems like time is just flying. After the boys' birthdays last week and different celebrating with my mom here, this week was my 18-year wedding anniversary. We had a small trip away...and I've just not been mindful of my three plates. It's crazy how fast I can let it slide or start getting back to diet head. Weight Watchers made some updates and emailed me. I fall for it every time. But I know I just need to keep moving forward with three plates and walking. That week last month of green was the best I have felt in quite a while. Focus, Amy!

Today I want moderation. Today I want to eat normal food without tracking every little thing I put in my mouth. Today I want freedom from sweets and snacking on junk.
