Thank your mother for me. I'll keep "Don't spoil your dinner" handy. Spoiling my dinner with snacks is a recurring problem during S-days. Very Happy

Yeah, finally!
What now? Well, I'm excited to start another 21days of vanilla NoS. I have my struggles with it but it works and is way saner than anything I ever tried before.

This is wonderful! Not everyone keeps up with this thread, so do share on the general board, if you like.

Well, I have achieved the 21 Day Club for the second time. A little sloppier than the first time, but about 7 pounds of weight loss. This time seemed a bit easier. I didn't stress over a can of Coke here or there, but neither did I think about food constantly.

I can sit on the couch Monday night for three hours and watch RAW and not even think about food.

The first 21 days I think it was about the food. This time it was about the habit.

I returned to the No S Diet on February 1st, and 21 days later, I'm still here and going strong. Very Happy I am glad to be here to renew my membership in this club!

What I learned:
1. Snacks were definitely my biggest problem. I really haven't been craving sweets that much.
2. I read some of the archives and found Granny's testimonial where her husband just followed the rules and lost weight, and she thought about it too much and didn't. Well, this time I'm just following the rules. I think the first time I tried No S (2010-2011), there was too much internal conflict going on. "This is stupid. I need a snack. I'm sooooo hungry." Now I don't even think about it. "Is it time for a meal? No? Sorry, then no food for you." That's it.

Of course, I may still be in a honeymoon period, but so far so good. I think the old conflicted attitude is what got me to quit No S after I lost 16 pounds last time. This time I am going to lose 16 pounds, drink a toast to Reinhard, and keep on going! Knowing it works for me is the secret magic ingredient. Cool

Great to hear of your down-to-earth attitude. This is smart and humane.

Commit to the marriage before the honeymoon is over. Smile

Made it to 21! 2/4 through 2/24 (counting it now because sdays can't be failure) next step is working on "dont be an idiot". Sdays are still pretty hedonistic! Want to fix that.

I am focusing on Vanilla No S and not too concerned by what each meal is - as long as it fits on a plate.

I am a daily weigher and I have been amazed by how my weight can fluctuate day-to-day! Just goes to show that you cannot trust the scale on a daily basis!!!!

Woohoo on the return of 21 days and on the insight regarding the scale. I just shared a similar thought on my thread. It's mostly water that is changing. My food intake definitely doesn't justify fat changes that big. I' m not willing to live permanently trying to manipulate the water content of my body.

I agree oolala53 - my food intake definitely does not equate to the scale changes - I do however enjoy watching the fluctuations.

Hello!
This is Hippy Dippy here. Today is my 21st day on the NoS. It's an "S" day, so I know it'll be good. Yes, I did "fall" down once every week with my nemesis: dessert. All my fault--should have let my man know it was off limits. And I've been doing the "glass ceiling" as well, because wine is my preferred sugar-delivery system. Notwithstanding my faults, I've managed to lose 1.5 pounds. Very happy with that especially since I was not dieting.

Ok, so who am I? I'm a pre-menopausal woman, 46 years of age and at a not-happy-with-it 205.4 pounds (well, now its more like 204 pounds). I've been higher at an all-time high of 212 (home scale, of course--don't get me started on the dreaded Dr's office scale). And, since 7th grade, I've been on (or off) some kind of diet or another. Haven't tried them all. Did have some successes, but gained back the pounds when I started eating "regular" foods...because eventually you just cannot go indefinitely without pizza, icecream, wine, insert-substance-here.

In January of this year, I had the epiphany that dieting was insane. Went on the Big Quest for books out there to substantiate my newfound belief. Did find information on Intuitive Eating. This did help. It opened my eyes to just how crazy things had gotten for me and that I was a "professional dieter." It helped me to stop the constant weighing of myself and it let me allow myself to eat from all food groups. Unfortunately, it didn't help re-learn how to eat right. Fast forward to June 2013 and I've gained more weight. Not good. Went searching for something realistic...because I just knew 1 billion Chinese couldn't be wrong about WHITE RICE!! I found this website on No S. I got the book and had to start right away. July 1st was my start date.

Love it!! It IS so deceptively simple. And you know what? I can now go 5 hours between meals without thinking about eating or food. Whoa! That would NEVER have happened before on Atkins or WW. And, then I can go another hour before actually having a plate (meal). And when I eat, I give my full attention to the food/plate/meal. And I stop when I am fully satisfied and feel full (but not uncomfortably so). So, sometimes food gets left on the plate. I absolutely love the freedom!!! No more counting water glasses, carbs, points, or calories. Whoo-hoo! Thank you all!!

Now, onward to more green days, more movement, more pounds off! I will keep you informed.

And thank you to whole forum for keeping your posts and helping me in my path by following yours!

Hippy Dippy!

Congrats hippy dippy! Our stories are very similar! Same age & about the same weight. Been dieting since age 10 & found intuitive eating which sounded good but didn't quite work for me. This seems to be the perfect solution for us veteran dieters.

You're doing great. Keep up the good work & hope to join y'all next week!

Yay! I made it to day 21! So happy to be here. This has been such a blessing. After a lifelong food obsession, this plan has given me a normal relationship w food for the first time ever.

It's amazing how, when something as basic to our survival as eating is out of whack it really erodes one's self esteem. Being able to put food back in its proper place has been huge for me.

I would love to lose 40-50 lbs but if all I get from this plan, is continued peace with food, I can live with that. I love to eat & cook so vanilla NoS is all I'm willing to do. I do exercise & have no health concerns so losing weight is just a vanity issue at this point. Nothing wrong with wanting to look great, but not at the expense of my sanity.

We'll see. Hopefully I will lose some weight in the process of all this. I don't weigh myself but have noticed my face thinning out so I think I'm headed in the right direction albeit very slowly.

Sorry to be so long winded! Btw, what do most ppl do next? Start 21 days over again or is there a 50 day club or something??

Thx for listening!

Linda

Missed this club until now! I opened a check-in thread when I hit 21 days, back on July 19. I actually had 50 no fail days until I went on vacation last week and had an entire 5-day run of red! Anyway, no harm done and happy to be back on the No S wagon again --

Yesterday I completed my 21st day!!! Whoop whoop! Can't believe how quickly it's gone!

Linda, yes yes yes to a 100 day club! that's gonna be my new goal too.

What would I have done if I hadn't found NoS!?!? I keep recommending it to my friends and colleagues and so far I have 2 people on the bandwagon Wink but I don't think they are as enthusiastic as me. We are a certain breed, methinks!

I'm posting after 30 days, because I wanted to make sure I made it to 30. I'm liking NoS a lot. It seems normal and simple. I've even lost a bit weight. I hope this can take me all the way. I have 8 more pounds to lose. I don't want to get stricter than NoS (no-carb, IF, no sugar on S days - to me those take away the whole simple beauty of NoS).

One of the greatest things for me about NoS is it gives me a reason to be able to say no to people's offer of sweets or snacks without my worrying that I'm going to hurt their feelings.

Because I'm already what would be considered a normal weight (not in France, though), I do sometimes wonder why I'm even limiting myself at all, but I love the discipline of no snacks, sleep better with no sweets and like the awareness of no seconds. I did have to learn to serve myself more on my firsts. My m.o. had been to start really small and go from there if I was still hungry. The NoS works even better for me. Still playing around with portion size.

I've enjoyed reading your posts. Nice to be a part of the list.

Welcome & congrats on making it to 30 days! Even if you don't have any weight to lose, NoS is a very sane way to eat.

Yay! I have done my first 21 days. It is getting easier, mainly because I have started eating a lot at meals.

Finally back to 21 days on habit, with no reds and no funny stuff. After a long stretch of being wishy washy, it is nice to be back to "extreme moderation" Smile

Made it through 21 days with one extra S day. Not calling it a fail....

I think I have the 3 meals with no snacks down. The one plate is also happening.

Had a few difficult days when I made my plates heavier and took juice or milky drinks if I felt I was going to lose it. Maybe I have a strategy for getting through the days/ triggers that make me lose it. I would like to think I now have some options I didn't have before...

The only thing that makes me feel that maybe it's not a real 21 days is that for the last 5 days I have had really bad toothache, antibiotics, the works. Didn't feel like eating (this never happens when I am ill - I normally go the other way bingeing like there's no tomorrow )

The biggest negative (and I don't feel as down about this as I would normally ) is that i haven't lost much. 2lbs.

I feel much more in control around food. I feel I could live this way.

When after 2 weeks I had lost 2 lbs in the first and put it back on in the 2nd, I started looking at the make up of my plates - and decided that I was eating too much, and too fast.

Decided to try this - have been doing it for the last 5 days.

Really slow down and savour my food (lots of inspiration from the tachew discussion ). Did this by taking mouthfuls half the size or filling my fork half as much.

Have really small portions of 3 or 4 different foods. The theory being that one only really enjoys the first few mouthfuls.

Might sound like a lot of food but the portions are small. For dinner today I had a small salad first, then a piece of toast with an egg made from 1 omelette. Then a few grapes. All fits easily on one plate although I am finding that having the different 'courses' on separate small plates makes it feel like more.

Really enjoying the variety, and I think this interest is helping to make my portions half the size. Am spending some time and effort to make the small courses as tasty as possible - don't know how this is going to work when I go back to school on Monday (am a teacher )

Am enjoying eating like this so we will see...

(cross-posted from my personal check-in thread; hope that's okay!)

Made it through 21 days! I'm seeing some changes, all positive.

1. Work pants are slightly looser. I mean slightly. My belly is a little bit flatter. I'm only about six months postpartum, so I don't really expect my abdomen to return to my pre-pregnancy size for another six months or so, if at all. But it is nice to see a change.

2. I'm feeling less hungry and more able to cope with hunger between meals. Since I'm not generally prone to cheating, the main effect of this is that I spend less of my day thinking about food. It's opening up some brain space for me, which is great.

3. I find that I'm mostly sticking to a 3-meal structure even on S days, although I'm not making an effort to do so. Yesterday I had scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast, ate a very late lunch (3:30ish) at a family event, and had an ice cream sundae for dinner around 8:30. I did have a small plate of seconds at lunch, purely for pleasure. But I'm surprised at the relatively moderate way I find myself eating when the rules are gone.

4. I'm eating more interesting food. This is because knowing I only have 3 opportunities to eat each day keeps me from saying, "I'll just grab a quick granola bar/cheese quesadilla/handful of chips/piece of chocolate/bowl of cereal and have something else later." Usually that "something else" ended up being something else boring, so I never got around to the interesting stuff.

5. A lot of the sugary snacks I used to fill my day with are sitting on the shelf, not getting eaten even on S-days. I don't want a lot of sweets on S-days; I want good sweets on S-days. So the not-so-good stuff just doesn't get eaten. I don't see myself buying any more gluten-free toaster pastries, for example.

Anyway, I'm three weeks in and doing well, with no inclination to stop no-Sing.

21 days it is. For the second or third time in my 2 1/2 years of NoSing. This time I didn't set out to make it to the 21 days club but here I am.

So my lesson is: just focus on my habits and not to worry about how long it's been and see where I end up. Not to stress when I don't make it (otherwise, I'd have had terrible 2 1/2 years instead of a brilliant ones)

Congrats!

Even before No S, I often noticed that I could rarely impose goals on myself, yet I sometimes saw in retrospect some impressive streaks.

However you got to 21 days, the habit-building potential is still in the "savings" account!

Bam...I did it. Me the lurker for years....the girl who does well for only a few days at a time...ME! I lost 14 lbs too! I am 48, just so you know. I gave up alcohol for the 21 days also. I am sure that is why the loss is pretty good. The nightly drinks were keeping me from sticking to NoS. Over the years I've tried just drinking on S days or doing glass ceiling but then my weight wouldn't budge and I would give up entirely.

So here I am...and it worked...and I am going to bang out another 21 and see how it goes. I feel really good and I hope to write here again in 21 days on April 5 th! 😳

Okay I did it again. I did two 21 day challenges back to back...and I lost another 8 lbs soooooo YAY !!! I feel really great about this and it was fun challenging myself however these last few N days I felt the pull to mess up...just because...my nature is always to balk the system...we are our own worst enemies sometimes...which is probably more true with people who need to lose weight. So now I step back and just enjoy this habit that I think I have firmly in place right now... I will enjoy the freedom and just ride this NoS wave and see where it will take me. 😁

As of today I've lasted 21 days of Vanilla No S. I've worked very hard in my allotment garden every day and just haven't had the time to even think about eating. I eat my meals and that's that. When my day is done I'm too tired to even think about snacking while watching TV. Mostn evenings I've fallen asleep. I now realize that my overeating and snacking junk is due to boredom. For me, the solution is to keep busy with hard work. It's a great appetite suppressant for me.

My first 21 days!
Laughing

My weight is about stable - that's fine - I'm not expecting weight loss in the first months.

I have totally dropped my snacking habits!

I've been happily surprised that my new confidence in the rules means I can just say "no, thanks" and people accept that. Before, when I was half-committed to saying 'no, thanks' they would try again, and again, until I gave in!

It's made packing up food for work much easier too - just one (or two if it's a 12hr shift) meals-to-go to think about. Before it was a complete chore to pack meals and snacks and emergency foods!

The term Vanilla NoS doesn't appeal to me - so I'm not joining that club. I am satisfied with less food already. I don't put all my food on one physical plate, I might have salad on the side, or a dessert of fruit and yoghurt as part of my 'one meal' - and that seems fine to me.

I'm looking forward to checking back in on 25th July for my second 21-days!

13h June 2015 8stone 12.25lbs
4th July 2015 8stone 11.5lbs

Yeah, baby! I just love not worrying about whether I have access to food for a snack. Among other things.

See you on July 25th.

Just completed my first 21 days and, while I have yet to lose weight ( I gained back the two lbs I had lost in week 2), I have gained a realization of how my too-small breakfasts and late afternoon grazing have packed on the lbs since my early twenties. Willing to keep going another 21 days and very much hoping I lose and maintain any loss I achieve. Thanks...

2nd 21 days

Well, I've completed another 21 days.

First time round I had two red days.
This time I only had one red day!

I'm going to keep track of months now, using the Habit Cal - so my next check-in will be at the end of August.

21 days with no red days or extra (non-weekend) S days!

I feeling like I'm finally getting my eating under control, and this is getting a little bit easier as I go on. I haven't weighed or measured myself yet (i'll do that at the end of the month becaause I wanted to concentrate on good habits for the first month) but my clothes seem to be fittting better, and the belt on my work trousers needed tightening - I hope that's not my imagination!

I celebrated my 21 days this week. I did not take any extra S days and only had one red dot which is an absolute miracle in my 20 years of permasnacking! It has not been easy, as this is really a deeply ingrained habit of mine. But the scale, which has been very slowly creeping up, finally stopped going up and has made a slow turn back down. Saturday has proven to steadily be an out-of-control S day, whereas Sunday is generally a bit more toned down. I'm hoping S days will just start working themselves out without adding restrictions. Anyway I have tried this all many times over and I have to say that actually doing the daily check-in is what has made it stick this time. Writing it down and knowing other people see it makes me feel accountable, or honest actually!

This is great news! I'm glad that it's not putting you off that it hasn't been easy. I love No S so much that people might think that it's a piece of cake. It isn't, but it's so much easier than anything else- for me. I hope it will be the lynchpin for you, too.

I come from a family of emotional eaters and quite a few anorexics, and a bulimic or two. This diet has helped me to realize how human beings are meant to eat. I always had struggled a bit with my gluttony, though I have managed to keep my weight down to within 10 lbs or so of the ideal. This is much better. I think maybe another 5 lbs to go, but we will see where this diet takes me! Smile

I'm very excited and am planning to buy copies of the book for friends.

Woo hoo! I made it Very Happy

I have been no S ing for 2 months and have just completed my first 21 day run with no fails and no non weekend S days.

The great thing is it just keeps getting easier - habit is key.

I am enjoying my meals more, putting healthier food on my plate and (gradually) losing some weight. Thank you Reinhard.

Fantastic! Keep enjoying your meals. If you aren't getting what you want in a few more months, don't leave without telling us! You don't want to be someone who gets impatient, goes and tries a bunch of other things and comes back wishing s/he'd just hung in there.

are we allowed to post twice in this thread? Very Happy

if you scroll up, you will find my post from 2 (!!) years ago. even though i did stick to nos for quite a while then, i slipped. and then life happened.

anyway. i did it again and yesterday was day 21. and i don't want to miss the sanity and calm confidence of this.

i have a stressful semester ahead and i hope nos will give me the structure to make it through with my head on straight.

Repeat visits to the 21 day club are encouraged. It's really all about what's motivationally helpful to you and others. Sometimes that second or third visit can represent a triumph of willpower much greater and even more worth of recognition than the first.

So well come back!

21 days!!! I did it Smile It won't be official until the end of today but since it's an S day I can safely say that I completed the 21 day challenge.

So I will admit I thought for sure the weight would fall off which it didn't. I think I lost about 1 or 2 lbs. My clothes do feel a tiny tiny bit better though and I never feel stuffed and uncomfortable anymore so that's amazing.

Things that did happen that are better than weight loss are-

1) I started to love my meals again, everything tastes amazing to me now. I love being truly hungry before a meal. I use to pretty much be on autopilot when it came to eating, I was bored with food but I still craved sweets and crunchy salty things like crazy.
2) My grocery bill has decreased along with the time I use to spend in the grocery store. I use to be in there forever planning what snacks and treats I wanted to devour that evening.
3) About 90% of the snacks and sugar that I use to eat on a daily basis are no longer good enough for my S Days. I choose my absolute favourites on the weekends, I'm not wasting my S days on anything that isn't absolutely amazing. I use to eat anything sweet just because I was craving sugar and then I would balance it out with something salty like chips, and then I'd go back and forth all night long. I probably wasn't even really tasting what I was putting in my mouth.
4) I can almost feel my mental muscle get stronger every time I make it through an N day. I'm feeling more empowered every minute that I stick to this. I can see how this might eventually spill over into other areas of my life.
5) I have less dishes and more time because I no longer measure everything and count calories. I also saved dishes, time and electricity by no longer baking 2-3 times per week and devouring it all in 1-2 days. Clearly calorie counting did not stop me from binge eating.
6) I've environmentally friendlier now because I drastically decreased the amount of packaging that comes into my home in the form of snack type foods.
7) I can eat out and at other people's places with a new sense of freedom

All this after just 21 days. I can hardly wait to see what good changes happen in the next year!!

Mari

Thank You Kittson and Oolala.

I have read through a lot of the older posts on this site and it really helps to get advice from people who have already been there.

Oolala I am following your advice (which you mentioned on another thread) and trying to go 100% vanilla for 1 year before I even think about modifications!

As soon as someone follows my advice, I get nervous! But it may help you avoid "premature optimization."

I am the queen of premature optimization so this will be good for me for sure.

21 days complete yesterday.
Wouldn't have bet on it.
This is from a once-a-week-at-least-binger.
I'm happy.

I'm thankful to Reinhard and to the members of the forum.
I'm grateful to Reinhard for the advice and for the forum.
A lot of generous giving going on in the forum.

No-snacks is particularly helpful to me.

Also, while I also check in daily, I like this 21-day check-in, thanx Kevin. It's neither the very distant 1-year horizon, nor the granular daily view.
Helps me to go on.
It's a good, solid, yet visible term.

I'm not reporting measurements, as I don't measure.
I know I've lost some fat by looks, feel and belt.

Mostly, though, while I'm looking to lose some, too, I hope to come to peace with food. At this point, while I'm wary, as I've had a long experience, I think Reinhard's advice helps me focus on the how and on moderation/balance. It helps me concentrate on the means, the path, rather than 'results'.
The actions, the conduct, I can bear in mind, work on, and make a habit of. The 'results' will follow, not to mention that the habit formed is a goal in and of itself, especially given my bingeing.

So, pleased, grateful and remaining on my guard...

I'm glad you wrote this. Since I haven't really lost weight I tend to shift from focusing on the path to results sometimes. Yesterday was one of those times. I purposely wrote on this forum so I could come back and read the amazing non-weight related results that I have already experienced so that I don't give up when I don't see physical results.

Congrats! I, too, was at least a semi-binger, but it was more like nearly every day, from after work until I went to bed. I had wild S days a LONG time, but couldn't blame it on No S. I'm still working on how to fill my time. NO eating plan takes care of that, I don't think.

Enjoy the new "relationship!" Hope it leads to a good marriage.

yep 21 days club, im here too! Smile
21 days of no reds!

here are my insights:
kaalii wrote:

the challenge was easier than i thought...
but more profound than i thought, too...

i have lost 2kg, 2 cm off the waist and some body fat percentage, too...
even actually too much, im borderline skinny now... and my 3 meals are more than satisfying - when im not tired, not eating junk (pizzas and burgers) and eat too early in the day...

- sweets are almost gone from my life... i wish for some of them smtms on n-days... but then i forget about it on s-days (probably because i have my snacks then and im satisfied with that)... there is enough of hidden added sugar in our food anyway... and i can taste it now more than ever... scary...

-the little voice to snack is so rare now, almost gone... and when it is - it is for healthy stuff actually... dried fruits, almonds, peanuts... i dont mind failing for those.. but this challenge was about the habit so i stuck to it... and i will keep going vanilla noS... and enjoy my dried fruits and nuts on s-days... or parts of the meals (but i actually enjoy more taking a handfull or two and munch away - snack-style)...
the rest of the times, i know - if i want to snack it - find a way to make a meal out of it or incorporate it into a meal.. period...

-no seconds revealed that im not naturally bloating as i thought i was... Very Happy if i can stop after a plate i will not be bloated like i used to be - i used to a l w a y s take seconds... im attributing my waistline shrinkage to no seconds, too... my inner and outer abs are not helplessly stretching over my overfull stomack for hours a day anymore...
oh, and the sense of satisfied control when i stop!!! now that's a feeling i adore!! so much peace and serenity in it... i feel i can do anything if i can do that... Very Happy
and no seconds are my natural calorie counter... besides making me turn inwards and feel how much nourished i am being at the moment, i know i cant go so much overboard with 3 decent meals a day... not with common sense... and i discovered i do have common sense... and that no matter how heavy a meal on a certan day was - it will balance itself out with all the others in the week(s)... and yes, junk food like pizzas, burgers, french fries make me crave seconds the most... so i know what to watch out for...

im so happy to have found noS...
thank you reinhard!!!
and thank you all who are recognizing and practicing it! i admire you all!!

i will do a monthly challenge now... and then the first big test is coming - 6 weeks holidays!
but one challenge at a time!!

My second lot of 21days! I feel great..my s days have calmed down thankfully and I just feel really solid with my n day habits..it's like second nature. My weight hasn't really changed..I feel my clothes are looser though and I'm not bloated so I'm happy with that. I don't need to lose much..of course it would be nice, but I feel it will happen when I'm ready. I've tortured myself enough over weight and food..no more. All I need to do is tick my little green squares..enjoy my 3 plates of food and enjoy my life. My body will do what it will do.. Very Happy

Maybe this is premature, but I MADE IT! (it is still morning, so I have the day ahead of me) but...this is day 21 for me and I'm doing GREAT.

Other than a bite of garbanzo beans as they were cooking, which I had before dinner on day 18, I have stuck to No S very well.

and, though there were a couple of times where I really ate a LOT for a meal, in order to avoid the mid-afternoon screaming snack attacks, I have eaten pretty moderately for meals.

I just started skilletglove yesterday, so I'll aim for 21 days of that, too.

And I plan on checking in here after day 42, Wink Maybe, just MAYBE by that time, my appetite will have adjusted so it doesn't give me grief at 10 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. I thought it might have changed by this day in the journey, but not so far. One snack craving that HAS disappeared, is the 10:00 pm surge. I eat dinner anywhere in the 5:00-7:00 range, and don't feel hungry again all night.
