Based on my visit to London last year, my idea of the English diet is lots of lovely vegetables and very little meat. I was on a 30-40-30 diet at the time (protein-carb-fat) and I remember feeling really protein-deprived. I couldn't figure out how to get any meat to eat. I kept ordering meat pies an...

Does the Zone count as a crazy diet? Because if so, I followed that for a couple of years. I actually felt great when I did it, but it got to be too much trouble to maintain in the long run. No longer able to eat milk chocolate.
I made an interesting discovery over the weekend. I bought some fine milk chocolate, a type I've enjoyed before (Dolfin, from Belgium, with coarsely-ground cinnamon in it). To my surprise it tasted terrible to me, painfully over-sweet, way too sweet to enjoy. I knew I could no longer enjoy candy bar...

I find that the very simple No-S rules eliminate the need for discipline and self-denial to kick in. It takes some work for the first few weeks to get into the No-S habit, but after that it should be an automatic decision most of the time. If I had to deny myself a snack every time I wanted one, I c...

Thanks, cvmom. In the end it went fine. Lunch at the reception was fabulous, and just enough food. Then I had one piece of really tasty wedding cake (it's a shock, I know, but there is such a thing), and then the newlyweds took us on a nice brisk hike (how adorable is that? they are really fitness-m...

It's a matter of discipline. I have to say I really like No-S because it's not about discipline, it's about habit. From my experience, self-denial isn't a sustainable habit, and I don't think it is for many people. The reason many people eat less and stay slim is that they've made healthier habits,...

Just a repost from the No-S homepage, on the subject of multiple meals: I love the No S Diet, but my doctor says I need to eat 4/5/6 meals a day because of my medical condition! The No S Diet has a little known loophole just for you. If you look closely at the site, you'll notice that nowhere does i...

Maybe you could try having dinner later. I don't usually eat dinner until 7 or 8 at night, and after that, I'm usually done for the night. This is after having breakfast around 7 or 8 AM and lunch around 1 PM. I sometimes get a snack craving in the afternoon, but some tea, or milk if I'm desperate, ...

S-days as a vital escape valve
I've been No-Sing for three months now, and my habits are solid. I think one key to my sucess, such as it is, is to do my best not to eat anything that I don't find delicious, whether it's an S-day or not. But I've learned that I REALLY rely on S-days as an escape valve. I don't go wild anymore the ...

I agree with mimi and The Preacher: I would dump the Doritos. Snack chips are cheap, cheap, cheap. After you've been No-S'ing for a while they probably won't even taste that great to you anymore. As The Preacher says, you can always give them away: I know that anything left on the kitchen table at m...

Great thread, KCCC! I have a more general form of your brown rice tip: whenever I cook anything, I portion it up and freeze or refrigerate whatever's left over right away so I won't be tempted to pick at it as I'm cleaning up the kitchen. It helps keep me from snacking or seconds. Sometimes I even c...

Failure, Day D8
Bah. Failed tonight: went to a restaurant and split an appetizer before eating my big bowl of soup. I wasn't even thinking. How silly of me. I think restaurants aren't my friends on weeknights. I had a bit of a sketchy restaurant experience earlier this week at a happy hour for a friend's birthday o...

I think that a firm No-S habit, like most other new habits, is easiest to cement when you don't have a lot of other stresses or demands on your time. Right now, when you are worried about your trip, may not be the best time for you to try and get a new habit down. That said, I do think No-S is just ...

Weekly Check-in 5, Day D5
I didn't have an easy time bouncing back from Easter this week. I had a failure Monday night, with not just seconds, but thirds of dinner (I managed to stay away from the sweets though). After that I felt snackier, and I had a lot of trouble resisting leftover Easter candy. But by the end of the wee...

Welcome! What has worked best for me, especially in the beginning, is to eat tiny servings of a lot of different things so I don't feel deprived. For breakfast, I usually take a "one from column A, one from column B, one from column C" approach: A protein: soy sausage, eggs, leftover Easter ham, etc...

Joining in to back up what others have said: I eat plenty of healthy food, at 3 meals a day, and I don't feel that I'm depriving myself at all. Sometimes those 3 meals aren't even all that healthy: I'm a cheese freak, and there's no way I could stick to a plan that didn't allow some cheese in my die...

Failure, Day C53
Bah, I failed yesterday. What KCCC said: I don't recommend it. The rule is "no sweets", it doesn't say anything about how the sweetness got there. That doesn't mean you can't put a spoonful of honey or sugar in your tea or your oatmeal, but I'd stay away from anything that's actually dessert-level sweet because it keeps you...

Still on track. I gained a couple of pounds back from what I reported last week, probably because I skipped some exercise sessions and ate a bit more. Today is Good Friday, so I'm semi-fasting.

Like others here I'm a bit puritanical about Splenda: don't want to keep feeding my sweet tooth, worry about the health effects, etc. But I do depend on eating some fruit (even something sweet like pineapple in juice) or a bit of sweetened yogurt at the end of dinner, just for the flavor contrast. I...

Things went smoothly again this week, knock on wood. The scale has told me two days in a row that I've lost ten pounds since I started No-S, so I'm choosing to believe it. It's been ten weeks since I started trying to do this, the day after MLK Day. I had a couple of failures on my way to 21 days, b...
