And herein lies the beauty of nos. It's not that weight loss( calorie restricted ) diets don't "work" . They do. It's just that the strategies most of them employ to restrict caloric intake are not sustainable. Conventional diets fail long term for behavioural, not physiological reasons. Nos strateg...

For me the problem with calorie counting is it puts things the wrong way round. By the end of the day, when counting calories ( or WW points ) I would be thinking " I have 250 calories "left". What can I have ?" and then spend ages deliberating whether to blow it on a glass of wine or some chocolate...

Totally agree with oolala about not talking about it to anyone. That sort of turns it into "yet another diet ". Of course any way of eating (including noS) is a "diet" but noS is not a diet in the conventional sense of the word. It's a kind of non diet ! Talking about the diet you are "on" ( which i...

oolala, thank you for that. I do relate. 20 days in and I feel calmer, happier already. I don't know which came first - feeling happier and calmer and therefore being ready to face my eating demons, or facing up to them and adopting the eminently sensible structure of noS is making me feel calmer an...

encouraging constant snacking in toddlers??
This snacking thing starts young doesn't it? What's with the modern parenting habit of plying toddlers with a constant stream of snacks and drinks? When did this start? It was not the norm in my childhood. I see parents everywhere (including CHURCH ) rummaging around in bags for little tupperware tu...

why do I go to bed ravenous and wake up ok?
Like many others I find the hours between dinner and bedtime the most challenging as this is when the fat beast within traditionally wants to scarf down all the tasty extras. Especially when everyone else has gone to bed. I do enjoy a solo foodfest. BUT I SHALL RESIST.... I go to bed feeling VERY hu...

my goodness, what lovely welcomes. You really are a kind , civilised lot! I look forward to sharing my quest for slimness. Because that, frankly, is my goal. I absolutely will not be happy with just more healthy eating patterns/ attitude towards food if I don't shrink.A lot. I'm in no rush before an...

Jasper's cautiously optimistic occasional check in
My name is Jasper and I am a slothful glutton. Or a genetically hospitable person who hates sport and likes to cook and eat for friends and potter around at home. Same thing, really . That's my release from being a worn out wreck with a difficult and responsible job and three small children. For tho...

Ironchef, I can't thank you enough for that - your first paragraph , about maybe it's BECAUSE I am holding down a responsible job and raising 3 kids. I have honestly never considered that might be a factor , and I have given this a LOT of thought. I think you might be on to something with the idea o...

thanks nicest, I appreciate you joining the discussion. I have heard that perspective before and I am sure it's part of it. However if I look at my closest ten friends , NONE of them are fat, only me. I'd say over half of them have to make a conscious effort to stay slim, but the point is they manag...

Well I have been following noS for a grand total of six days and after years of counting I know the calorific value of every single food . It's tempting to do a mental count - but I do think if I am to follow the true spirit of noS I need to learn to ditch that way of thinking. It hasn't worked long...

Why do you log all your food for the day? Isn't that the start of the problem? The beauty of noS is you can forget all that :) I can see how tempting it is to find out the calorie total, having logged it. There is nothing actualy wrong with doing that if it helps you stay on course , but for you it'...

thanks you one and all. What wonderful considered replies. First , can I state clearly, I am NOT in any way knocking NoS as a diet, far from it. It is almost genius in its simplicity. My lament was centred around the fact that fatties like me( going by the check in threads ) appear to not even be ab...

Reading check ins; discouraged at lack of success
I discovered this site last week. I am giving it my best shot. I have been reading many of the daily check in threads and am most discouraged. Hardly anyone on these threads has lost weight. The general tendency is to start enthusiastically, then fail . then start again. Then fail again. Is there re...

Thanks for all the views so far. I should rephrase my first question. Previous diets have NOT failed. They have all succeeded , pretty well actually. But they have not been sustainable , or rather , I have not been able to sustain them or settle back into a non disordered eating pattern. What attrac...

Is there a benefit in NEVER weighing yourself ?
...to distinguish one's nosdiet journey from all previous ( failed ) diets? This is my fist visit here and I have followed the plan for a day and graded myself a resounding success. I've had a resounding success with every other diet I have tried . At least for the first few weeks, until I fail. I a...
