Sorry, but I don't agree with saying if you want a sweet, eat a sweet. I didn't read that advice above. And I certainly did not mean to imply it's ok to eat a sweet. What I wanted to say was that a contained fail is better than giving up. If you want a sweet that badly that you feel deprived and ar...

Great thoughts. Following up with KCCC's thoughts, one of the things I love is that No S requires you to be a grown up. It requires you to be reasonable about expectations, sensible about what to eat, and to say no to yourself. No S is one of the most counter-cultural things you can do. It's my litt...

If you want a sweet then eat the sweet and call it a fail. Over time, the negative reinforcement will mitigate your cravings. If fail is too strong a word, then call it non-compliant. The world will not end, you will not immediately gain ten pounds, and at the end of the day you are better off eatin...

I jumped on the scale this morning just because my curiosity was getting the better of me. So after Christmas, a week of traveling w/ emotional eating and little exercise... I weigh exactly the same as I did in mid December. IN short, I maintained. I'm pleased. Just to refresh people's memories, I'm...

Still No Sing, still not weighing. I took last week off from exercise as I was out of town sending my son to Afghanistan and I was sick. And yes, I engaged in more than a little emotional eating. But I'm getting back on track albeit slowly. Last night I jumped on the elliptical trainer and realized ...

A full scale overhaul is hard and for most of us unsustainable. I've been trying to integrate the Michael Pollan rule of "eat food/mostly plants/not too much" for about two years now one little tweak at a time. I'm just now up to adding chickpeas to our diet. You can still do paleo/primal but I reco...

I use a dinner plate with a rim for dinner. The food doesn't go on the rim. I use a bowl for breakfast. Most days, I use a storage container for lunch as I brown bag it.

My advice? Find a new hobby, something else you can obsess over. Other than food, what sounds interesting to you?

My experience has been the two are somewhat incompatible.

I go the YMCA 4-5 times a week and have for 17 years. I do cardio machines, free weights and classes. My DH runs on their track in the winter, my 17 year old son swims daily or hits the weight room. Really, unless you are getting this kind of use out of your gym membership, I wouldn't bother. There ...

After a week - yes a week! - of indigestion (I think the pizza I ate a week ago Sunday caused it) my stomach is finally quieting down. It feels good to be hungry again. If it works, it works. I would go with it, especially if you enjoy eating this way. Sweets tend to trigger overeating which ultimately is not enjoyable for me.

Don't feel bad. I think 21 days is a rule of thumb for very simple behaviors and not across the board applicable to every new habit we want to develop. When you consider how complex eating is as a behavior - influenced by brain chemistry, social cues, and culture - I don't think it's reasonable to e...

Longer. Closer to two. But it's so easy to eat with it chopped up that it usually doesn't last that long.

I have very balanced meals because I buy the parts that go into a balanced meal when I shop, though I don't know what they're going to be exactly beforehand, except that there is protein, starch veggie and fruit. Maybe that's my meal planning. I would call that a form of meal planning. I think it's...
