Do any of you do this?

Post by Sinnie » Thu Jun 22, 2006 12:35 pm

I've noticed recently that I am completely *not* hungry in the mornings. This could be for various reasons...when I screw up and eat before bed, just too early etc. I'm not sure why, but I don't enjoy food when I wake up. Yes, I could eat, it tastes OK, but its forced to some degree.

My new thoughts last night were "why not wait until food sounds appealing and I am truly hungry, and adjust other meals accordingly"? Even if that means eating breakfast at 10 and lunch at 12:30, does that matter if those times I am hungry for it?

Any feedback from you guys/gals always helps - thank you!

That's not a particularly good idea.

The earlier in the morning you eat, the more food you'll end up burning during the day. If you delay the first meal of the day, your body will fail to start its more active cycle until later on and you'll find you're even less hungry and you'll have no energy.

Eating early on kick starts your digestion process and metabolism, meaning that you'll burn more carbohydrates and fats overall, and probably sleep more easily due to increased fatigue.

The general upshot of all this is that eating breakfast helps you to lose weight faster. Odd, isn't it?

Physiologically, I totally agree with Thompsonspier, but mentally, I don't.
LOL...
I'm the same, unless I have some activity to do in the morning... Then my hunger starts up right away!
But when I'm not hungry, all I want is my coffee, and looking at food isn't even appealing. You could retrain yourself, but you could also just go with your idea. I wouldn't recommend eating your dinner at 10pm or anything, but if you eat breakfast at 11, lunch at 3 and dinner at 7 you might do alright, assuming you have a day job which would let you eat your lunch at 2 or 3...

I say, do whatever works for you to stick to NoS, and make it compatible with your lifestyle!

Good luck!
Peace and Love,
Deb
ps... Oh my God, I would be sooooooo happy if I were your weight Cynthia! You are sooooo lucky!
Keep it up!

I understand what you mean.

Quite often I don't feel hungry in the morning, on days like those I either skip breakfast altogether, or I will eat a piece of fruit, or have a liquid breakfast (fruit smoothie or a slimfast shake).

I just can't force food down if I'm not hungry. This doesn't make me eat any more during the day, usually if I haven't had breakfast I will still eat my normal sized lunch and dinner.

I know the plan is based on having three meals per day, but another point of this plan is to stop mindless snacking - and eating breakfast when i am not hungry is the same as snacking when I'm not hungry.

I think what I am trying to say is that I want to try to get into the habit of eating when I am hungry and try not to be governed by what time it is.

Here's another thought..
Maybe it's the type of food you have, or don't have around which is making you feel this way..
If I have some cut up fruit, like pineapple or cantelope and some cheese and nice bread, or a small muffin, all ready to go, with no fuss involved then I'd eat in the morning..
But unless it's winter, hot cereal or a hot breakfast seems like too much work!
I'm lazy in the morning! LOL..

You all make excellent points and I'm taking each and every one into consideration. Thank you!

I do understand and agree with you, ThomsonsPier, that eating in the morning revs up the metabolism for the day. I believe there are scientific studies to prove this, or at least this is what the experts have been saying for years. I suppose what I'm wondering is if it makes a difference how long you wait. I never really skip breakfast, but I prefer it to be delayed a couple hours, never eating past 9 or 10 unless I have slept in (which I rarely do).

I guess my issue is with eating immediately upon waking up, or soon thereafter. I just hate to "waste" a meal when it could taste soooo much better when my body is craving food and it tastes amazing. This morning, for instance, I was able to get some kind of an appetite by 9am (not too shabby!) and had an orange, fried egg and half a bagel.

Deb, you definitely have a point in that as long as it's working, it's all good! True, I wouldn't eat dinner that late, I generally eat it quite early. Oh, and thank you for weight comment :) I must say I was particularly happy when I weighed in yesterday to see I am down to 135 lbs. I have to confess I have no idea how that happened as my eating habits have been shamefully erratic. I have not been overtly following the three meals as much as I have tried. But hey, I guess sometimes just OK is good enough LOL. But I'd really like to do better.

I think part of my problem is eating at night. That could definitely screw up my morning hunger signals. My experiment is to do No S perfectly and see if that wakes up my hunger in the morning. In the end, I must agree with Daisy that eating when I am not hungry is a no-go for moi!

Thanks for your help and opinions! Anyone else with some thoughts!?!

Hi Cynthia,

I will share that there are some mornings when the last thing I want is food, and only have a cup of tea and maybe a piece of fruit, but nothing more. I think it's OK to have the idea of "virtual plating" in here. If all I've eaten is an orange, and then around 10:00 am I'm very hungry, I see nothing wrong with eating the "remainder" of my breakfast (toast, egg, or cereal). I've done that many times and so far I've lost 16 lbs.

All the best to you!
It's time to make it beautiful.
