When "S days gone wild" don't subside.

Post by BrightAngel » Sat Jan 01, 2011 2:14 pm

Image Happy New Year

I recently read Gary Taubes' new book
"Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It"
The concepts in this book may be helpful to many of our obese members,
when combined together with the basic structure of the No S Diet.

This could especially be the case for those
for whom "vanilla" No S has resulted in little or no personal weight-loss,
or for those who find that "S days gone wild" don't subside after a reasonable trial period.
Below is a link with exerpts from it.

Very different from The Carb Lovers Diet: Eat What You Love, Get Slim For Life :

The editors of Health Magazine (and top nutrition scientists) have big news: Eating carbs is the best way to get and stay slim. Breakthrough research revealed in this book shows how certain carb-rich foods--especially those with the amazing natural ingredient called Resistant Starch--act as powerful metabolism boosters and appetite suppressants. Rather than making you fat and bloated, as decades of low-carb diet gurus claimed, CARBS make you thin. They shrink fat cells, especially in your belly; boost fat burning; increase muscle mass; curb cravings; keep you feeling full longer than other foods; control blood sugar, and lower cholesterol and triglycerides!

It is important to remember that there are a lot of rules
that have to followed for accurate scientific research,
and the results of that research are also often reported incorrectly.

Even then....
Science cannot prove what is true.
It can only prove what is NOT true.

Taubes' former book (2007), Good Calories Bad Calories,
which was written for medical professionals,
is a very detailed and hard read which
thoroughly covers the past 100 years of dieting research - all sides.

The new book, Why We Get Fat and What to Do about it
restates a lot of that information
in a way that an intelligent average person can understand.
Reading it will provide a great deal of enlightenment.
for anyone interested in the Reality surrounding weight issues.

This isn't new. The theory has been around for at least 50 years and the practice -- probably thousands. Though I'm not sure that the term "resistant starch" has been used.

I disagree with much of what this doctor says, but these confirm what you say:

The Starch Solution Video

The Starch Solution Article

People -- Not Their Words -- Tell the "Carbohydrates Story" In this article he mentions the Tarahumara Indians. While it's true they don't eat a lot of meat or dairy, they do eggs frequently -- just about daily. They don't eat much dairy because there's little refrigeration. Goats, pigs, cows and even chickens are viewed as a savings account and protection against starvation; once you eat them their value is lost. "Better to use the animals to fertilize the fields and improve their yield of corn, squash and beans and better to eat the eggs rather than the chickens."
"That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do. Not that the nature of the thing itself has changed but our power to do it is increased." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"You are what you eat -- so don't be Fast, Easy, Cheap or Fake."

ImageKathleen,
I'm very much looking forward to discussing with you,
Gary Taubes' book, Why We Get Fat and What to Do About it
after you've read it.
I am especially interested in the possibility that this Theory...if true...,Image
might provide a possible solution to your issues with Portion Control.
