A small portion control win

Post by GraceW » Mon Aug 05, 2013 2:02 am

I'm constantly surprised at how following the vanilla No S rules creates positive ripple effects without even trying. Others have mentioned a sweet tooth reduction, which I've noticed as well.

For me, portion control has been an issue because it's easy to overeat when all those bites sneak by in snacks. I hate that bloated, overfull feeling, but I didn't have a good sense of how much I was actually eating before No S. Today, I wanted to try a Five Guys burger and fries, but was a bit reluctant after checking the nutritional information (I wanted to see the calorie counts, out of curiosity). I ended up getting a little burger and little fries (hooray, they actually have smaller sizes!).

Because burgers and fries are much richer than what I normally eat, I decided to cut even the little burger and fries in half and plate half on my smallest plate. To my surprise, the food was plenty enough, and I felt satisfied without feeling bloated or sick. So now I have lunch tomorrow too. Win win!

Plate sizes and checking in with the body really can work together. Plus those gaps between meals. Magic.

It is a weird phenomenon -- I did not expect, nor do I remember reading in any of Reinhard's stuff -- but I definitely cannot eat as much at one sitting as I used to be able to. For instance, a burger and fries at a fast food place used to leave me wanting whatever my kids didn't eat (stray fries, bites). I felt unsatisfied. But no more. Now it feels like a feast (also because I have healthier meals now, due to looking at it all on one plate and realizing it needs fruits and veggies).

Good job listening to your body!

My sons wanted to eat at a Chinese buffet, so I went hungry and ready, but after getting there and seeing all the food I enjoy, my heart sank, because I knew I'd never be able to eat as much as before. I didn't get my money's worth, but my 3 sons made up for it :)

Since it costs more to buy a few courses at a restaurant, even though I can't eat as much as I used to, I still feel I get a decent deal at buffets. (But they become a bargain when I get it to go. I get two or three meals out of less food than many people eat sitting right there.)

I don't know how I did that! I hope it doesn't do it again.
