Buying a sledgehammer

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

Buying a sledgehammer

Post by Per H62 » Tue Jul 16, 2024 4:58 pm

Hi,
I´m planning to buy my first sledgehammer in order to start training with the everyday system. The weight of the sledgehammer is 6 kg (13,2 lbs) and the handle 80 cm ( 31 inches). Would you say this would be ok for a beginner? Thank you for your help.
Kind regards,

Hi Per,

Sorry for the delayed response. It's a tad heavy, assuming you are not fairly fit already. I started with 12 pounds and it was fine, but I tend to advise easing into it more gently.

But it makes a huge amount of difference where you place your hands in terms of how strenuous the movements are -- if you keep the top hand close to the hammer head and then gradually move it lower as you get stronger that's another way to ease in (and of course, start with fewer movements).

If you've already gotten the hammer and started, I hope you are off to a good start!

Reinhard
