Refocusing

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

Refocusing

Post by Kevin » Thu Sep 21, 2006 12:49 am

Sometimes, you need a trick to help you refocus.

I've been doing lots of exercise, but not much shovelglove. Pushups, pullups, dips, rows... I've gotten pretty strong on them.

I wanted to put more cardio back in, so I picked up the hammer again. This time, I decided to be a purist and only do exercises that you could really do with a hammer. I hammer at the "ceiling", then hammer at a post directly in front of me, head high, then do the fireman chop, then chop the tree, then chop wood, then break ice (one handed), then do this double handed swing sort of like I was trying to drive something sideways.. almost like a vertical baseball swing, with my hands together, in the center of the handle... 25 to 60 of each with each hand dominant.

It has helped me refocus on this terrific form of exercise.

I'd forgotten how it makes you feel like superman when you are done.

Hi Kevin,

Great to see you hear again. I'm glad to hear you've been doing lots of exercise, even if it wasn't shovelglove. I've been throwing pushups into my routine the last few months, too.

That's cool Kevin! I've whittled down my program to where it's pushups, shovels, churns, and chops doing 21/14/7 reps on Mon/Wed and on Friday I do the same except I sub DB thrusters for pushups. I'm only doing SG three days a week because I'm getting used to my 16# hammer. The routine is tough partially because it is so -focused-.

Also, I agree on the Superman feeling. What is the deal with that? Do any of us have any idea why shovelglove induces this response?

I don't know, but I have a superman shirt that I sometimes wear while shugging, and that amplifies the feeling even more.

Superman T shirt

I could never pull off wearing a superman T shirt. Not enough, what, guts? Brass? Nerve?

I was going to say "bulk" in my case, but that's a good point . . . I think this hero's shirt would be more fitting for me ;)
