Spear Thrust or "stoke the oven plus lunge"

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

Spear Thrust or "stoke the oven plus lunge"

Post by Mike23 » Tue Feb 06, 2007 8:47 pm

As always, I apologize if this movement has previously been discussed but I saw it in one of my fitness manuals and thought I'd share it with those for whom it might be new.

Begin with the same stance as "stoke the oven". In the book, the hammer was held at shoulder level (like a spear) but it would also work at chest height (the higher position would work the shoulders more). The novel thing for me was that you actually picked up the lead leg and went into a lunge while you thrusted your "spear" forward. Push back up with that same leg into the starting position.

It's a nice variation if you want to incorprate a little more lower body work into your routine.

Enjoy!

Please don't apologize for the poor organization of this site! All the movements that have ever been discussed should be much more obviously arranged than they are.

That being said, I think this one is new. Sounds interesting... what was the book you saw it in?

Reinhard,
The book it's from is called Twisted Conditioning by Bud Jeffries. I mentioned it in a previous post "New Movements and some useful links" earlier last month (I am the knucklehead who couldn't send the links right the first time). The book deals with common & innovative exercises with a variety of implements, all geared for over-the-top strength training. I pick & choose from them for the sake of variety and, of course, use a LOT less weight.

Somehow I overlooked that particular exercise when I wrote that original post. I was re-reading Bud's book when I saw the "spear thrust" and thought it would apply to folks on this site. Again, Bud does his version with a full-length barbell with plates only on the one end. Here's the link to his site if you are curious about his products.

Take care.--Mike
