Shovelglove without the sledgehammer :)

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

Shovelglove without the sledgehammer :)

Post by Freelancer » Tue Aug 14, 2007 5:52 pm

Starting tomorrow I'm going to be swinging a shovel around, I don't have access to a sledgehammer right now so I figured that a shovel will have to do. I'm a decent muscular guy with no weight problems at all, the shovelswinging is just to get into the habit of daily 14 minutes workout. I've got great genes that allow me to keep decent muscles without any excersize but I want to make this habit stick for health benefits basically.

Do you guys think that using the shovel (less weight) will have a similar benefit as using a sledgehammer?
Eventually I'll be switching to a sledgehammer once I get my own place but right now its just not very convenient...

It's probably not quite as good as a sledgehammer, but it's good enough to get started. By far the most important thing is to carve out the time and build a regular habit. You can do that with an imaginary shovelglove.

So sure, give it a week or so with the shovel. If you love it but feel the need to upgrade, then get the sledge. And who knows, maybe you'll find the shovel sufficient. Hold it high on the handle and swing hard (and pray you don't hit anything) and I imagine you'll get quite a workout even without the extra weight.

You could always strap some sand filled ankle weights onto the end as well or fill up a few bottles of water and duct tape the heck out of them to the inside part of the shovel..
Have fun!
