Gloves

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

Gloves

I've tended to view the shovelglove induced calluses on my hands as an accomplishment rather than an annoyance, but after developing some unambiguously annoying calluses on my feet last month (even urban ranger has its risks!) I decided maybe I ought to revisit the issue.

Weight lifting or batting gloves had been suggested before:

So I thought I'd give them a try, just to see if they made a difference.

After spending an inordinate amount of time on amazon vainly trying to find something with more than a handful of reviews, I took a risk and ordered these:

I have to say, I'm very satisfied. I'd gotten so used to a low level of discomfort that I stopped perceiving it as discomfort, but I do notice its absence. I also notice that I'm doing the moves better, more directly. I'd been making all kinds of unconscious little adjustments to spare my calluses before. This is actually probably a bigger benefit than the increased comfort, and something that hadn't even occurred to me to anticipate.

The gloves are supposedly washable, but I haven't actually tried it yet. I'm not quite sure how this will work since they're part leather. They're not quite stinky enough yet to risk the experiment yet (I'm in my second week), but I'll post the results when I do.

Any other shovelglove-glove users? I know a bunch of you had been toying with the idea.

Reinhard

Note: if you order the gloves above, do heed the posters advice about buying a size up -- they're sized very small. I got XL, and I'm not a basketball player or anything (6 foot 1 with reasonably proportionate hands).

I have a pair of Dewalt gloves that I use occasionally...I don't know if they are available on Amazon, I got mine at Home Depot.
