I want to be an Urban Ranger
I want to be an Urban Ranger
... but i'm struggling to find the time and safe places to do it. I work a lot and have very little time to spare. Also my neighborhood is not safe to walk at night and i have no money to move.
So far i've been...
...walking 4 blocks at my lunch break. It's not a lot but i'm obese and used to drive everywhere.
...parking at the far end of the lot
...generally trying to walk more on my workplace
What else can i do cosidering i'm a beginner?

Kudos for 4 blocks at lunch break! Not sure what else you can do. Could you go the same 4 blocks twice? Is there any safer area between work and home?
Consider using youtube videos of walking workouts in your home. Yeah, I know that's not Urban Rangering, but you can use them as a holding pattern while you figure out where you can go safely. Check these out. I like Leslie Sansone, but there are others, too.

Maybe you can be more of a Ranger on weekends, finding nice neighborhoods to explore.
Keep doing whatever you can with faith and I believe opportunities will eventually show themselves.

Oolala, walking in the day is safe and lots of people run and walk on a daily basis, so i can walk in the weekends.
Monday to friday my goal is a humble 5000 steps. I want to start with a realistic goal so i can achieve it instead of being frustrated with myself. Will up the number of steps gradually and slowly.
My friend gave another ideia; she says i could walk around my workplace after each patient i see. This could work and would mean walking 5 minutes an hour. Not much, but i guess it's better than nothing!

I think you're very smart to start with 5000. And five minutes an hour is a great deterrent to sitting problems. It may not make you lose fat, but it's still good for the blood.

I think your goal is reasonable. Good to see you taking that step, no pun intended. I can't even pretend to know what methods a psychologist uses, but walking for me is almost like meditation without all the thinking.Marina wrote:Oolala, walking in the day is safe and lots of people run and walk on a daily basis, so i can walk in the weekends.

I wish walking was "without all the thinking" for me! Unfortunately, perserverating on problems happens when I walk very easily because it's possible not to have to pay that much attention to what I'm doing, so it can be similar to sitting in meditation and having to keep drawing attention away from thoughts. But it's as worthy a way to distract as any, or even more so, since it is so good for my innards, too.
But honestly, I'd rather just not have the problems in the first place... Or at least not have them seem so important to me.

It took me a while to come around to this, but now that every phone has a step counter, it can be a useful tool.
5000 sounds reasonable, but what is your current average daily step count? I'd use that to form the basis of your preliminary goal if you haven't done that.
Then let that goal prompt your ingenuity.
As you succeed, ramp up the goals until your happy with the amount of walking you do.
Sounds like your more or less doing this already!

If you have a mall nearby, you could walk there. Many malls are covered, so you can walk there rain or shine, Sometimes, I just walk around my house, room to room for 30 minutes or so.

I know this thread is 100 years old, but I have to second someone who said Walk at Home workouts by Leslie Sansone. I ADORE those workouts. They are so fun and a great way to get in a lot of steps.
