Jean's new check in

OCTOBER!
It is always nice to start a fresh month. My weigh ins are on the 20th, but for some reason the first of each month is when I think of new goals or try new things.
This month I need to get a littler tighter on my virtual plating. I like to eat out and probably do so 4-5 times a week. This counts getting carry out from the deli counter at the grocery store. I just need to watch it a little closer.
I had 3 reds in September that all involved eating out.
I also ditched my exercise habit cal. I have not had a red on that calendar since back in January. At this point it is much more effective for me to keep an exercise log than a habit cal. I am trying to add shovel glove 3-4 times a week for 10 minutes, but I keep forgetting to do it. That is a goal this month as well as doing 100 miles of either walking or jogging in the month.
Saturday exercise
3 miles jog/walk (32:30) (10:50 pace)
1 mile walk
PM: 10 minutes shovel glove
Total miles for Oct: 4

Exercise log

I took it easy today. I also did a mid month weigh in. I felt like I might be gaining, and a mid month weigh in gives me a reality check. I was relieved to find my weight exactly the same as two weeks ago. In the first 9 months of No S, I have not had a gain yet at a monthly weigh in, and that is my goal. I never want to post a gain at the end of the month. So I know I need to watch it at this point. I am maintaining so far this month, but barely.

I have a very sore shin. It seems to be a muscular thing so it just needs rest, but it is keeping me from my normal routine. I am not sure what happened, but I suspect it was caused by dance class Monday night. It was only a little sore at first but became very sore. So...Tuesday was a 2 mile walk only, and Wednesday was a half mile walk only. This morning I skipped entirely but hope it will feel good enough for a leisurely walk this evening.
I am feeling a little funky about this because I have become addicted to my exercise. Oh well. This is a minor bump in the road.

Thanks Who Me?
It has been hard, but I have done nothing strenuous for three days and will continue until the pain goes away. The walks I have taken have been so slow that it takes me more than twice the time than it would at my normal pace. The weather has been so beautiful that it was great to at least be outside. The slow walks seem to help.
Today
2 miles strolling

Exercise:
AM: 2 mile slow walk; leg is less sore but still needing TLC
18.5 miles for the first week of Oct and shovel glove 4 times
In addition to a sore shin, I have been hampered with clogged ears this week which takes a few days to clear and affects my balance. I am also on call this week but luckily have not had any middle of the night calls. Two more nights to go. I tend to be a little careless with food choices during times that I am distracted by life's little stresses. This has been an indulgent food week...technically compliant but not great.
And this is when I tell myself how thankful I am that I can walk...I can hear..and I have a job! Minor inconveniences will pass.

Thanks Thtrchic for the encouragement.
Exercise today. I plan on multiple small walks. So far I walked about a mile to the drugstore and back. Tomorrow I will try to run.
I did not really take walks, but I was on my feet a lot. I did errands and regular shopping and then shopped with my sister for a couple hours for a planned sewing project.
My leg is sore but not terrible.

Exercise Sunday
3.1 miles (5K) walk/jog (35:11) (11:20 pace) and 1.1 mile walk
Evening 1 mile walk with DH
24.7 in Oct.
I ran mostly in the park to be on asphalt rather than cement and used some preventative ice and ibuprofen even though my leg seemed fine. It is a little stiff but not painful.
I am going to try to log food for one week..just to get myself back on track. I hate keeping a food log so it may not last.
Sunday food log
Breakfast: 2 nutrigrain eggos with peanut butter; banana; 6 oz 2% milk
Lunch:2 grilled burgers (no buns); sweet potato fries
Supper: turkey patty with cheese; 2 slices pumpkin bread with margarine; frozen fruit bar
Snack: cashews
It is a good thing that it is an S day because that pumpkin bread was definitely a sweet. My daughter left it here, and it was great but more like cake than bread.

I counted calories today just out of curiosity, and it came out at just under 2000. I usually eat more when I exercise twice, especially when It involves swimming. I would estimate that my usual week day calorie count is 1500 to 1800. This is enough to sustain a slow weight loss. I am good with that. My downfalls are when I add calories with beer and/or generous meals eating out.
I read on someone's post once that they have to eat less than 1000 calories just to maintain.. I am not sure I could do that.

Today was grueling. I wanted to quit my walk/jog in the first half mile. I kept my pace slow and stuck with it and felt better for it. I needed to do it because I will not run Friday and Saturday due to another 5K on Sunday.

Wow, you are doing so great...and I like that when you checked out your calories they were in a good range. And I noticed 9/20 you marked 40lbs lost so far..that is soooo inspiring to me...
Time to kick myself in the hinny and get serious, no more whinning, I can't do it, or some other excuse...If someone wants something bad enough, they can do anything...the desire just has to be strong enough to overcome all other obstacles.
So glad for people like you that have been on here and can attest to the fact, No S does work, if you work it.

Thanks determined, NoSnacker and Tobiasmom! You keep me going!
This has been a so so month, and I am just hoping to maintain at my Oct 20 weigh in. I have not gained yet at a monthly weigh in and want to keep that record. My losses have decreased which is to be expected, and I am fine with that. After all, 1 or 2 lbs. a month will get me there eventually and is more likely to stay off.
Exercise today
2 mile walk; 10 minute shovel glove
40.7 Oct
Once again the feedback is great and keep hanging in there everyone!

Hi there...I hope I didn't offend you about the bingeing versus permasnacking.
I know that I need to change my mind set and not label myself as such
I love NoS and want to give it an honest shot and not revert back to diets that just don't work for me.
Thankssss again for all your encouragement!!
Keep up the fantastic work..some day I hope to report I'm down 40lbs

Congratulations on staying with your plan in spite of setbacks. That is real determination. You must be so proud of yourself.
Have you considered that maybe you have a stress fracture on your shin. They have had several of those on Biggest Loser and it usually comes from some sort of exercise like running. If it keeps hurting, you might want to have it checked out. It is not serious but they might be able to recommend what you could do for it.

I'm baaaack.
That is funny Panglesue2 because I was just thinking the same thing. I did a 5K today, and it was sore afterwards. I used ice and ibuprofen, and then it was fine, but I feel like I have been relying too much on ice and ibuprofen. I have a good pain tolerance and do not often use pain medication, but I have been using the ibuprofen more as an anti-inflammatory. At any rate, I need to have it checked if it remains sore and inflamed.
Hi NoSnacker! I hope everything works out for you. I am not sure why No S has worked for me when nothing else worked before. I hope you find your way to success as well.
5k today (35:57) (11:36 pace)
Not my best but okay considering my recent shin problems.
Also walked about 1.5 miles.

Exercise today
AM: 3.5 miles walk/jog (40:35) (11:36 pace per mile); plus half mile cool down
PM: 1.5 miles walking dogs; had extras today
59.8 in Oct
We have one more 5K on Halloween weekend and then the next run is the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. It is 5 miles. There is a long steep hill at the beginning that is a killer. My goal is to finish in under an hour. I have done it twice with times of 61 minutes and 65 minutes. So... my exercise will be geared to that goal now. I am also making sure to take days off and not run more than 2 days in a row. My shin is almost better, and I do not want to screw it up.
That will probably be it for awhile. I will run when it is cold but not if it is snowy or icy. Dec, Jan, and Feb are unpredictable so I usually do not sign up.

You are doing so well!! I'm going to stop by here more when I need inspiration. I have been thinking about shovelglove, but only if I can get a lighter hammer. I have some neck and shoulder problems. I actually tried doing the workout with my 2 lb metal hammer, and it was too easy, the handle was too short, but it did get my heartrate going and I could feel an ever so slight burn. So I'm thinking 4 or 5 lbs?? I should just walk over to the hardware store and see what they have. Let me know if you have any advice as a girl doing shovelglove.
Thanks for stopping by my post too. You are inspiring. Keep it up!!

I just started shovel glove, but I like to do Leslie Sansones walking away the pounds (WATP) with hand weights in the winter when it is too cold to exercise outside. I do either the 2 mile or the 3 mile DVD (30 mins or 45 mins). The DVD calls for (2) 2 # weights during about half of the routine. but I use (2) 3# weights during the whole routine. When I first started, I did the 1 mile DVD and if you decide to try it, you need to play around with what is comfortable for you.
I think I bought a 2 DVD set with the 1, 2, and 3 mile DVDs for less than $20. They give you a mix of mild cardio and weights that you can step up or step down with differing levels of effort. Amazon has them, and I have seen others on this forum who use them too.

Thanks, that sounds like something I would like. Here in Mexico, we don't order anything for delivery, cause the mails are totally unreliable and packages might not make it. I might be able to have someone bring it down, however, so I will check it out. Do you need a treadmill?
Keep us updated on how you like the shovelglove. What weight is your hammer?

Thanks sweetness! At a meeting today a friend that I only see occasionally told me I was shrinking. It came out funny the way she said it, but it was a compliment. The gradual loss eventually starts to build up and starts to show. The great thing is that I am so content with the gradual losses at this point. I am glad I had some decent monthly losses at the beginning to keep me motivated, but now the little losses are just fine.

4pm. I am hungry even though I snacked already this afternoon. I ate cheese popcorn and an apple cut up and dipped in caramel dip and felt yucky and unsatisfied. I should have eaten a sandwich or something healthier and more filling. For me that means having at least some protein. NO MORE JUNK!
I do not eat much junk food any more and I feel so toxic when I do. It is hard to believe that I ate so much junk before. I am not sure I really liked it that much then either, but I ate it.

That is true Who Me! and the popcorn would have been okay plain! I finished out the day by eating about 5 times total, but that one snack episode was the only one that left me feeling gross. I also had some beer today so it was quite the indulgent day.
However, it was also a very physical day with lots of exercise. In addition to the running and walking, I went shopping twice, did housework, and went to a hockey game which involved more walking (from where we parked) and running up and down stairs (in civic center). I was pretty tired and sore at the end of the day.
Today I am taking a yellow for exercise, but I plan to do at least 10-15 minutes of shovel glove.

Thanks Sweetness! I have room for improvement, but I think I am getting better at easing up on myself when it is appropriate to do so.
It has been a rough few days. I was on call for the weekend plus I had other things I wanted to do. It was hard to eat right and hard to get exercise in. I exercised Saturday morning but skipped Sunday except for a one mile walk. I also skipped exercise this morning, but we have our 90 minute dance class this evening. I am no longer on call, but I am dragging from the weekend and from only getting 2-3 hours of sleep last night. I also pretty much ate at will Saturday and Sunday.
I am gradually starting to accept that there will be times like this, and even if I stray from my routine, my worst day now does not even come close to the horrible habits I used to have. For example, when I was up until almost 4 am last night working, I did not snack...at all. In the past I would have eaten everything in sight at every opportunity.
I ended up getting a one mile walk in today before dancing. I can chalk up another mile toward my 100 mile goal for the month.
Total miles in Oct=72.8

You are doing great! Only a mile is still fantastic. I probably only did half a mile today. My excuse was tiredness, a big mariachi band with trumpets woke us up at 5 AM for our landlady's birthday. Kinda fun though, doesn't happen in Minnesota! Take your S days and not too seriously. And kudos on the no snacking at night!!

Thank you Pangelsue! Your encouragement was needed today. I lost my voice yesterday and now have a full blown cold. I am home from work as a result and unable to do my regular exercise routine today. I may still take a slow walk outdoors later since I find this to be helpful when I am sick but not so sick that I am flat on my back. This means I will not make my hundred mile goal this month. Yet...I am really happy that I have made it as far as I did especially considering that I was slowed down by a sports injury earlier in the month.
I am so grateful to Reinhard for developing and sharing this plan. It has drastically improved my quality of life. I have struggled with my weight off and on since college, and it just gradually got worse. I cannot believe how well this has worked for me, and it is so good to hear that my success story might be helpful to someone else. Good luck in your No S journey as well.

I cannot believe how well this has worked for me, and it is so good to hear that my success story might be helpful to someone else. Good luck in your No S journey as well.

Thanks Sweetness! I am doing all the right things to nurse a cold. Sleeping, mucinex, lots of fluids, and some mild exercise in the form of some slow walks outside. I still have no voice, and I am determined to not try to go to work with no voice. I know from experience With laryngitis that it will come back if I give it another day, but if I go back too early, it takes forever to get over it.
I also eat a lot when I am sick. I do not fight against the extra hunger because I think it is genuine hunger. I have also found that I will eventually cave in and eat everything in sight if I try to curb the desire to eat more when I have a cold. I did build a fence around my eating today even though I took an S day. I put food for each of my 3 meals on a full size plate. I then took part of it off to use for a snack. This meant I ate 3 small meals and 3 snacks. I still ate more than usual because I do not always finish everything on my plate and the plates were a little generous. Today I ate it all. However, this plan at least set limits and the food choices were healthier and I was satisfied.

I ended up going to the doctor, and I have bronchitis. However, I have two days of rest and pampering in, and I have decided to stay home from work tomorrow too. I am starting to feel better but still can't talk and still very tired.
I did some walking again today at an easy pace and not all at once. It was nice outside, and it helps to get the fresh air.
I ate 3 generous meals, but so far I am no S compliant today. The funny thing is that I was 1.2 pounds less on the doctor's scale than I was last week at my monthly weigh in at home (on 10-20). That is after all that food I ate yesterday and in clothes and sandals. (I always weigh in my pajamas.). Maybe their scale is a little light?! Mine has always been pretty consistent.

Thanks Patty!
I am home from work again today. I am starting to feel better but it would have been difficult to get through a whole day of work, especially a Friday. It is not easy for me to stay home knowing that my absence causes other people more work. However, I think that I am starting to take care of myself better than I have in the past.
I am also leaving in a week for a special vacation that I want to be completely healthy for. My husband and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary with a 15 day trip. My 11 month weigh in will be the morning after we get back. That ought to be an interesting test of how ingrained the No S habits are!
My habit cal will be yellow for those 15 days, but I will try to practice moderation. I may also track my miles. I would like to hit that 100 mile goal since I missed it in October.
Walked one mile today. Yellow for exercise...That is rare. I hand a handful of cashews separate from a meal, but I am calling this a green day for No S. I threw away half my lunch because the medicine they gave me is upsetting my stomach and then wanted more to eat within the hour. So I had the cashews.

Enjoy your weekend!! I'm sure you'll feel better.
I would be reading on the posts how to handle vacation. Are you sure about making it ALL yellow? For me I would think it actually EASIER to go for some green days, just thinking how I'm usually happy that its Monday again.
Happy Anniversary!!!

Thanks all! I am feeling a lot better. I was signed up for a 5K today and decided to give it a go. I figured I could walk all of it if I had to. I ended up running more than not because it was narrow in a lot of spots and walkers created bottle necks. I finished in a respectable 35:50 (11.34 pace). The walk to and from the car added at least another mile. That puts me at 86.9 for my monthly mileage...short of 100 mile goal but it will be close enough.
Regarding vacation, I went to Guatemala for 16 days in June and did not log anything. I roughly followed No S habits every day but I took S events regularly. That month I still lost 1.8 lbs. This vacation is more luxurious but I plan to get regular exercise too so I am not going to worry about it. This will be just one more test of how ingrained (or not) these habits are.
However, I have read and learned from the posts of others regarding vacations and other challenges. So many things I read really hit home.

Monday: Yes it is a new day! It was a green day. I walked a couple miles but nothing fabulous. I am winding down with the posting and getting ready for a work trip and then vacation. I will see everyone in 3 weeks. I may have a chance to read but will probably not post.

Thanks Patty! I will probably go through a little withdrawal from this forum, but I am interested to see how ingrained my habits are during this time off.
I started out my month on 10/20 and had a crazy busy on call weekend, a bout of bronchitis, and a 3 day work trip. These are all things that both interfere with my exercise and prompt more eating or the wrong kind of eating. I was ecstatic to jump on the scale today and see MAINTENANCE! NO CHANGE! I did a little fist pump on that one! Today is my first day off of work, and we leave in a couple days for our 15 day trip. I have a house sitter / dog sitter coming and no worries and no solving the problems of others until Nov 26 when I am on call. WOO HOO!
If I can manage to just maintain for the rest of the month that would be a HUGE success.
For exercise, I decided to just try to get one hour of physical activity a day. It would be too hard to track anything else.

I decided to check in because I am learning a lot so far on this trip and want to log it. A while ago I noted that I felt that I need at least a year of practice at No S before the habits are fully formed. Every season brings different challenges. This vacation is a perfect example. We just spent 2 long days of driving and eating on the road. I ate some things that I did not even really want and realized I need to research what the best choices are at various fast food chains. We stop when it is convenient and eat what is there. We are covering a lot of miles and time is important. In the past, I just ate whatever and was not overly concerned. Now I am pickier. I want my food to taste good...not just fill me up. I take some food with me but that only goes so far.
On a better note I ran/walked for half an hour this morning and then we walked at least 4 miles this evening. Hopefully the exercise outweighs the gross food I ate for lunch. (Breakfast and dinner were okay.)
We are in one place now for 3 days and the weather is wonderful.

I think that's a great idea to log your trip, especially if you learn something. I know what you mean about travel and choices!! I just got back from a trip, see my thread if you're interested. Have a great time!

The best month so far
My 11th month of No S was the best month so far. I thought about putting this post in the testimonials section even though I only lost .2 lbs this month. That is not 2; it is .2. Here was how my month went:
The month started out crazy busy at work with a lot of overtime and a 3 day out of town trip. I got sick as a result and struggled with a bout of bronchitis. (I tend to eat more when I am sick.)
Next we departed for a 15 day 30th anniversary trip that included 3000 miles of driving, a resort stay, and an 8 day cruise.
Yesterday was my monthly weigh in day so I am one day late weighing in, but with all this going on I LOST .2 LBS! How exciting is that!
I did not track anything during my vacation, but the No S habits I have formed have become natural. I rarely snacked. I ate wonderful meals but made far more reasonable choices than I would have in the past. I ate few sweets, but I did enjoy every single dessert offered after dinner on the cruise. I drank way more alcohol than normal.
One big reason for my success this month was that my activity level was way up. I ran when I could but mostly there was a lot of walking and some swimming.
I found that I felt funky when I did eat something too greasy or too sweet. I struggled to find semi healthy choices at fast food places during the days we did a lot of driving. I settled for skipping fries and ordering smaller meals.

WOW!!!! First, congrats on your 30th anniversary! Second, congrats on an amazing trip! It not only sounds like a wonderful vacation, but it was made even better by your healthy eating.
I'm so glad you posted your experience. It's such an inspiration to hear of how much NoS has changed your life.
Well done!!!

Thanks for stopping by Patty, Janie, and Julie! It is good to see you and some other regulars hanging in there and working through the ups and downs. Hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving!
I am taking a break from exercise today and getting some housecleaning done. I allow myself one day off from formal exercise each week even though I rarely use it.
This may also turn into a NWS day because we are going out to eat for a family birthday. We will see how it turns out.
I am still on vacation from work so I am in a relaxed mode.

I walked 2 miles today. Six of us are running the 5 mile Turkey Trot race tomorrow morning, and I have a cold again. Drat!
As usual with a cold I am extra hungry. I was able to barely manage a green yesterday with the family gathering and the cold, but I had a snack this afternoon. It was a fairly healthy snack, but today will be an S for sick day.
Oh well! At least the weather is supposed to be good tomorrow. The other 5 may just have to wait a little longer for me at the finish line. I am still hoping to conquer the big hill in this race and come in under an hour.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Thanks for the encouragement Janie! I did the Turkey Trot at 57:24 for 5 miles (11:29 pace). I was so excited! For some reason, I felt a lot better after finishing and made my food to take to the gathering and went off to a great family day. We have family here all weekend so it will be fun. I hope you had a nice day!

Yesterday and today were completely full of family activities including making and consuming a lot of food. I actually think we eat more food at Thanksgiving than we do on any other holiday. I just ate and enjoyed and did not worry about it, but I am sure that I ate less than I did on previous Thanksgivings.
I walked a couple miles today but nothing strenuous.

The eating continues....
I have eaten a lot during the last four days, but I try to look at the positives:
--I have maintained my exercise with a 5 mile run Thursday...2 mile walk Friday...3 mile run (36:46) and 1 mile walk Saturday...a 2 mile walk on Sunday.
--I have pretty much maintained a 3 meal structure.
--Tomorrow is Monday, and I am actually looking forward to a return to sanity.

I have said that I need a full year of No S to experience the challenges each season brings in order to feel that the habits are ingrained. This was so true this week. After going through Thanksgiving weekend, I realize how easy it would be to slip back into old habits. With family in town for the four day weekend, this is probably the most intense 4 days of eating I have faced in 11 months of No S. I am going back to work today, and it is a relief to reestablish my routine. I woke up hungry so this may be a challenging day. After coffee and the newspaper, I am off to run.
Sounds like even though you ate more than usual, you did good this holiday. The fact that you stuck to a three-meal structure is awesome in my book (I'm pretty much a non-stop grazer for 4 days. ) And all the exercise.......I'm in awe.
Good luck today. But somehow I don't think you'll need it. You got this No S thing down.

Nov 30 exercise
3 mile walk/run. (34:31; 11:30 pace) with half mile cool down walk
I was hungry yesterday. I ate decent meals for breakfast and lunch that should have kept me satisfied, but I was ravenous for supper and ate more than I usually do. It was still a green.

It is December and time for new goals. I do not know why, but I cannot get away from being excited on the first of every month about setting new goals. I also set new goals during the month, but the first just gives me a feeling of preparing to conquer a new month.. Silly maybe but it works for me.
Overall exercise goals remain the same...a minimum of 30 minutes a day with one yellow exempt day a week if needed. Running opportunities will decrease with cold weather coming on so my goal is 2-3 times a week or 10-15 times for the month and a minimum of 30 miles for the month. I also need to get my daily runs back under 12 minute miles. I went over 12 minutes 2 out of 4 times I ran this past week.
Food plan remains the same. Vanilla No S! Maintenance!
Exercise today: 3 miles (37:06) (12:22 pace)

good goals, I'm not so ambitious, I got off my walking routine with coming to Minnesota, it snowed last night! I know I'm wining but its cold here. Oh well we're here for a good reason.
You are doing great! keep that green streak going!

I am also in the Midwest (IL) and it is cold here too. It rained a bit last night and then frosted so I decided not to risk slick spots running or walking outside today. I got out my WATP (walking away the pounds) DVD and did the 2 mile routine with mods to intensify the workout. I have had this 1, 2, and 3 mile DVD set for several years and love it for the winter.
You have good reasons to be a bit out of kilter with your routine being disrupted and family stress. So if all you did was miss your walk and have a few cashews, you are doing well. Think about what you might have done pre No S in similar situations.?

You're right, if it were not for No S, I would surely be gaining weight this month! I hope to at least maintain. You are doing so well! I need some kind of indoor exercise I can do. I bundled up and went for a 35 minute walk this morning, felt good. That's a start. It snowed about 3 inches this afternoon. Good thing I found my boots, they were lost, haven't used them in almost 3 years.

Thanks Tobiasmom and Sweetness! The encouragement works right back. Yesterday I was debating about running outside in the cold and then read the post from Sweetness and got my butt out there. Today I am dragging too, but I read the post from Tobiasmom, and I am on my way after this msg...walking today.
Exercise yesterday:
3 mile jog: 34:45 (11:35 pace) and 1.5 miles of walking

I only ended up walking one mile yesterday. I ran short of time in the morning so I just did the mile. I am on call after hours this week and used this as an excuse to procrastinate. I took my weekly allowed yellow for not doing at least 1/2 hour of exercise. Today I did the 2 mile WATP DVD.
The weather and the newspaper delivery are screwing up my routine, and it is funny that my great new exercise habits have a negative side as well. I do not seem to be very flexible. We have a new carrier so the newspaper gets here 30-45 mins later. My routine is to have some coffee and scan the paper before heading out to exercise. I cannot do that now that the paper comes later. It makes me late for work if I wait for the paper. I also have to check the weather and bundle up which disrupts my precious little routine. Routine and habits are good, but I need to build in some flexibility!
