sherlock's check-in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

sherlock's check-in

Post by sherlock » Fri Aug 06, 2010 5:09 am

I've been around here for a couple years, posting infrequently and exclusively in the shovelglove section. Figured I should start a check in page to keep myself honest (and so in a few months I can look back and figure out what was happening.)

Clean first few weeks.

***

Wed, 8/4/2010: seconds failure. Went out for pizza with wife's family. Could have avoided this had I just taken as much pizza as I wanted the first time around, but instead I grabbed one slice at a time. Live and learn.

Thurs, 8/5/2010: sweets failure. I was fortunate enough to receive two VIP tickets to a local golf tournament. The VIP tent served lunch and cake as desert. I probably could have skipped the cake, but figured since the tickets were a bit of a luxury, and since I'll be doing a lot of walking around the course these next few days, that I may as well indulge.

Thurs, 8/5/2010: skipped shovelglove. Had an unusual pain in my shoulder as I began my routine. Figured I should take a day and rest it.

It's been about ten days but I wanted to check in to note that I have had zero failures since those referenced in my previous post. Though my wife did try to tempt me with a bowl of ice cream a couple of times!

8/18: sweets failure. Was at father-in-law's for family dinner. One of my wife's brothers had a box of gobstoppers. He offered me a handful, and without thinking I accepted.

8/19: seconds failure.

8/20: snacks/sweets failure. Played in a golf tournament and started to feel very tired and hungry halfway through. Needed a little boost so I grabbed a snickers from the cart girl.

8/27, 8/30, 8/31: shovelglove failure. Friday I skipped because I spent the entire day setting up for a wedding reception. I probably could have squeezed it in once I got home, but I also had to be up early on Saturday and decided I'd prefer sleep. Monday and Tuesday were just products of the fact that I typically shovelglove at night and not in the morning. I got home later than I expected and was so tired I just ended up going to bed.

no slip ups for a couple weeks... until tonight.

9/14: seconds failure. had chicken for dinner (not KFC, but real chicken) and didn't take enough on my first plate. i went back for seconds. frankly, if you combine the portions it still wasn't a whole lot... but need to be honest.

9/20: seconds fail. Co-worker and I had a frozen pizza for lunch, and I grabbed two extra slices without even thinking about it. I need to have more discipline in this respect. I feel like I've been doing this without even realizing it.

On the bright side, I have begun walking much, much more, which I wasn't doing previously.

9/22 went out with a couple buddies I haven't seen in awhile, and just went right to bed when I got home. Avoidable fail, but a fail no less.

Had a few slip ups with snacks and sweets lately. Was sick last week so exempted myself from shovelglove. Been walking a lot and have lost about 12 pounds in the past 6 weeks.

Lots of craziness in the past month. Had a few slip ups, but I can't remember what they were and I did a poor job of tracking. Rest assured, I have been regularly shoveling and doing my best to keep up with no-s, but I am going to have to start fresh with the tracking portion of it.

So today:

11/23: snack/sweet failure. Wife offered me one of her reeses peanut butter cups, because she didn't want both and was going to throw it away. (I'm still very cheap, and I'd rather eat it than throw it away... even though it's certainly better off in the trash.)

11/30: snack fail. Wife made banana bread. I had a couple slices after dinner.

12/6: sweets fail: I tried one of my wife's M&Ms. They were peanut butter, which I had never had, and I was curious.

Something strange I just realized. While I sometimes eat a handful of M&Ms or reese's pieces, I almost never have any other sweets -- even on S days. I don't eat ice cream or cake, and I didn't even have pie on Thanksgiving. But oddly, I never feel like I'm depriving myself either, and half the time I don't even realize I've declined desert until afterward. It's all second-nature to me now.

But I still can't help myself if I'm around someone that has reese's pieces. ha ha ha
