Bethany's Daily Checkin

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Bethany's Daily Checkin

Post by bcdg24 » Mon Aug 30, 2010 5:59 pm

I decided to finally start this diet today.
I don't know that i'll be super-strict at first, using a physical plate to measure success, but I will stick to the meals-only no-seconds no-desserts approach.
So far today i have had one meal and only water to drink. i did grab a mint after lunch, but not as a dessert, more because i didnt want my coworkers smelling the burger i had for brunch.

tonight i will just have one meal. I may only get 2 meals a day, but it all depends on my environment. I work full time and have 2 children under age 2. I dont drive, but i'm always going. I only live 2 miles from work.

I will also add to my lifestyle change exercising for 30 minutes 3x week in the mornings, and i will ride my bike to commute from work at least 2x week, on days i dont exercise. I use an imitation Wii Fit video game w/ mat for my "exercise".

Update on Yesterday

Post by bcdg24 » Tue Aug 31, 2010 1:57 pm

Yesterday I ate 1/3 lb Angus Burger, a couple Chicken McNuggets, and a couple french fries for breakfast/lunch meal. i drank only water all day, had no seconds or sweets; then for dinner I had my homemade version of Chinese food: chicken spring roll, teriyaki chicken, jasmine rice, and stir fry. I had one big plate and ate the whole thing. To my surprise, I was just full enough, not like the stuffed-pig feeling I thought I would have. This means I can pack it away - which is, of course, not a good thing.
I had many temptations before dinner, but i was able to fight them off by thinking of the big meal i would have later, and the 3 S-Days in a row that are coming up.

I decided I better have a big(ish) breakfast this morning to ensure I don't fail before lunch.

I'm eating 1 packet of instant Cinnamon Roll flavored oatmeal, 2 slices of peanut butter toast, an oats & honey protein/nutrition bar, and a cup of water. Thank God my work has good tasting water, or i would kill myself having to drink so much of it...

For lunch, I'm having leftovers from last night's dinner, and for dinner, i'm eating out with my friend, her choice.

After dinner is taking care of the babies until they both fall asleep (at which point I typically collapse in bed), which is between 9 and 10, although the newborn likes to torture me by waking up every few minutes just when I think she's down for a few hours so I can catch some Zzzzzzzz.....

day 3: on track for success!

Post by bcdg24 » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:57 pm

Yesterday I had a 6-inch tuna sub w/ bunch of veggies, light mayo, mustard, on wheat, a few harvest cheddar Sun Chips, an apple, and i drank raspberry tea with my lunch. i dont consider that failure, but you might. it was the only sweet drink i drank all day.
For dinner, I had the chinese i had planned to have for lunch. then i didn't eat again the rest of the night, although i realized i was very hungry later in the evening. I didn't want to eat four meals yesterday, though, so i didnt eat any more.

Today I had 1 packet of maple/brown sugar oatmeal, a small walnut muffin, and 1 half of an oats & honey protein/nutrition bar.

For lunch, i had fried taquitos (chicken, steak, and cheese), a bean-chicken-rice burrito, a handful of baby carrots, and half a banana.

I'm not sure what I'll have for dinner, but the kids will be at my mom's so i will be alone and have more time to test my will to stay on this diet.
I believe I will do right, but...
We'll see!

Starting Weight - Goal Weight

Post by bcdg24 » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:01 pm

Oh, FYI, my starting weight was 171 on Monday. I was 169 when I started prenatal care with my 2nd baby, in February. I weight 188 right before she was born, then lost it all down to 169 with her birth, and have since been fluctuating between 169 and 171. My earnest hope is to lose 15 lbs by the end of the year, and be in the normal BMI range again. Then I hope to lose another 15 lbs to be to a comfortable weight, maybe by next summer. I hope to lose 30 lbs total and rest at a comfortable 140 lbs going forward.

Day 4 Success!

Post by bcdg24 » Thu Sep 02, 2010 6:24 pm

I ate a breaded chicken sandwich, baby carrots, an apple, tortilla chips, salsa, and a little mac 'n' cheese for dinner. No dessert, no seconds!

And no snacks or hunger pangs either!

This morning, i did not eat until 12, but i consumed a whole 14-piece chicken nugget meal (10-piece, plus the 4 my son didnt eat) and a couple french fries - but only drank water (even though i really wanted a smoothie!).

I will only eat dinner later, though i'm not sure what i will eat, again.

You'll get used to not having sweets during the week. I LOVE sweets and have a huge sweet tooth, and wasn't sure I could ever do without my 3 p.m. sugary snack, but I replaced it with a cup of coffee or herbal tea and after a few days I stopped craving the sweet snacks. I still wish I could have ice cream in the evenings, but I just don't do it. Sometimes I will have a glass of milk with a little chocolate syrup after dinner if I really feel like I need a treat. But mostly what has helped me is making sure I eat some fruit at every meal.
