Newbie here, just found No-S and set up HabitCal.
Mon 30th July - GREEN
I'm a first time mother of a nine week old (hence typing this 1 handed at 2:30am local time). My main motivation is to get a handle on my eating routine, which has been erratic since the baby was born. Being up every 2 - 3 hours around the clock has really messed with my meals. Sugary snacks, instead of fruit and veg, have been dominating my eating.
Vanilla No-S for me. I've got about 12 pounds to go to get back to my pre-baby weight, so I'm not too worried if that takes a while to come off. My main commitment is to sitting down, with a plate and both hands free, for three meals each N-day. I'm also trying to avoid rushing meals, although sometimes that's inevitable with a grumpy baby on a bad day.
So glad to have found this very sensible approach. Wish me luck!

Hey
Thanks for coming by and encouraging me! I am really hoping to have these No-S habits strongly in place by the time the baby is born. I am going to live vicariously through you the next few months. I can imagine it is going to be a lot harder with the busyness of a new baby AND homeschooling my 5 year old! But once the habits are there I think it will be a lot easier.
Hope you're having a wonderful week so far! And congrats on your little baby!

So far, so good. Harnessing beginner's enthusiasm by building that "fence around the diet".

Tougher today, as we had swimming at 12:30, and I decided to have lunch afterwards. 6am breakfast to 2:30pm lunch was a looong wait, but I made it without snacking. Probably a good way to break out of old habits, as normally I would have used the "I'm going to exercise" excuse to snack all morning.
More than half way to a completely green first week! Best not to get cocky too early though

Big effort today at lunch - I went to my grandmother's place. I was offered every S possible: snacks, seconds, four kinds of sweets! I must have refused food about 50 times.
Nanna: I'll put you out some fruit and yoghurt.
Me: Not for me, thanks Nan
Nanna: OK, just some cake then.
Me: No thanks, I'm full of that delicious lunch.
Nanna: Oh. OK, I'll get you a chocolate wafer to have with your coffee.

Aren't nanas great! They seem to think you are going to waste away if they relax their vigilance for one second!
I remember that baby time. I don't think you will be sitting down hands free to a meal anytime soon...and it gets worse as they get older and try to grab everything you are eating!
Mine are 23, 21 and 16 so i am well past that stage. Everyone will tell you this, but enjoy it, it doesn't last long. I thought they would never sleep through the night, and now I cannot get my 16 year old out of bed! Actually I used to enjoy that special me and baby time in the wee small hours....

Hey Ruff, thanks for stopping by. I'm doing ok on the sitting for proper meals, although they are sometimes at odd hours (breakfast at 4:20am anyone?).
I am enjoying the baby time a lot, and get a lot of help from my wonderful husband and family. Watching the baby fall back asleep (slightly "milk drunk") after his 1am breastfeed is pretty adorable, so I don't mind the broken sleep that much

Friday 3rd August - GREEN
End of first week - totally green! Just vanilla No-S, so no worrying about portions and content of main meals, just making sure no sweets, snacks or seconds.
I've been surprised that this is easier than I expected. I think it is the lack of decision making. If all snacks are out, totally, then there is no time spent thinking "ooh, I'm peckish, I should really have an apple, but I'd rather have toast with butter and honey, or perhaps a biscuit". There isn't any willpower to be exercised, since the line is so clear.
Looking forward to a few treats this weekend, including a TimTam tomorrow, and morning tea with my friends on Sunday.

Saturday 4th August - S-DAY!
Thanks for the congrats! Happy S days to you
One week down, lifetime to go...
I've just had a wonderful walk in the winter sunshine to the coffee strip near our house, and bought a slice of my favorite red velvet cake to share with my husband after dinner. I'm happy with this S, as I've been thinking of it during the week, and plan to really enjoy it tonight. Waiting for the weekend really does make it special
ETA: Just opened the box - the slice of cake is ridiculous! Did they really intend that for one person? I'm a bit shocked I used to eat this serve alone. I think we might be sharing some tonight and save a piece for tomorrow too.

Sunday 5th August - S-DAY!
Had morning tea cakes at my mother's with a group of her friends who hadn't met the baby yet. Enjoyed the homemade orange and poppyseed cake.
Interestingly, had a bit of a headache last night after eating the red velvet cake - too much sugar all at once I think.
I find I'm really looking forward to returning to N-days this week - I was excited about S-days, but I think I prefer the way I felt last week during N-days.

Thanks Amy. I did get through without snacking on sweets, but it was a close one.
Thursday lunch I have a strange situation - I am going on my first "date" with my husband since bub was born (11 weeks ago). We're leaving our son with my mother in law and going out for lunch together (easier than dinner!). I'm not sure whether to decide ahead of time to make this an "S" event, or just do my best and mark the day red if I have to?

Unexpectedly made this day green!
Our date lunch turned out to be one plate (steak sandwich and chips), so technically that is a No-S N-day! I love this plan - so easy to stick to and still have a fun date We went to a movie beforehand, but I found the ice creams (which I normally "must" have at the movies) didn't really have the same appeal.

Enjoyed my second S-Day weekend. Had a slice of lumberjack cake on Saturday (less sickening than the red velvet) and a soft serve ice cream on Sunday.
I did too much snacking on Saturday and had a bit of indigestion on towards evening. Clearly doesn't take long for the body to adjust to more sensible meal patterns!

This Monday has been very interesting so far. I had breakfast at 5am (usually somewhere from 4:30 to 6am depending on baby). I then had Mums and bubs yoga at 10am. Normally I am absolutely starved by lunchtime. Today I didn't even notice, we actually went for a walk together after yoga, and it was only when we got home at 1pm I realized I hadn't had lunch and was hungry, so I made myself a plate. No snacks, but more importantly no URGE to snack. In fact, no thoughts of food between breakfast time and lunch time.
Every other time I've tried to eat better or lose weight, it's been all about having lots of small meals and healthy snacks, making sure I was never too hungry. But Reinhard is spot on - all this ever did was make me think about food all the time. And the more I think about food, the more I eat food. Not necessarily healthy food either. What a delight to get more than half way through a day and not have thought about food at all!

Thanks tobiasmom! I'm excited, but trying not to get ahead of myself. Once I get to 21 compliant days, I'm going to see how the actual weight is going.

Had a delicious red duck curry for dinner last night - just one plate though I love this diet! I don't know any other eating plan where a red duck curry adn white rice would be 100% allowed.

Now at the end of my third week, yet to have a red day. I feel a little odd, like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Shouldn't this be harder?
I'm going to weigh myself on Monday (which will be 21 days) and see what my body has done in these three weeks. I know I feel better, but not sure what the scale will say.

I had an awesome Saturday: we've got heaps of winter sunshine here, and I went out with a good friend to have some churros and thick Spanish hot chocolate. I'd been planning the trip to the cafe all week, so really enjoyed the lovely warm churros with icing sugar and dark choc dipping sauce. I think this is one of my favorite aspects of No S, the return of treats as something exciting and to be looked forward to.
Made it to 21 days! No reds so far. I weighed myself this morning and found I've lost 6 pounds in these three weeks. Really, really pleased with this, as I've found following No S a lot easier than I expected, so losing 2 pounds a week is a surprise.

New goals - Urban Ranger and Weights / Other. I've just set up my HabitCal for these two.
Urban Ranger target: walk every day. I do this (almost) anyway, but hope to get a bit farther afield. It is winter here at the moment and raining a fair bit, but that's what wet weather gear is for!
Weights / Other targets: Mums 'n' Bubs yoga on Mondays, AquaFit with baby on Wednesdays, at least 2 (hopefully 3) weights sessions at my gym.
I used to be really into my weights, but had to go light during late pregnancy and post partum. Now 3 months out, I am excited to get back into it. I'm going to follow a split routine with the goal of building muscle. I find it very hard to gain muscle even when lifting pretty heavy (although I never have had a problem gaining fat!), so we'll see how we go. My body fat % is pretty high, so I figure the two angle approach (lose fat and gain muscle) will help.

Thurs 23rd August - RED
My first red day. It had to happen eventually I guess. I went to my local coffee place and my mocha came out with marshmallows in (I ask for no marshmallows, no sugar, no cream etc). Rather than pick them out, I let them melt and drank them. They were super sweet, so that's sweets.
The tough part wasn't the marshmallows, it was spending the rest of the afternoon and evening thinking "it's a red day anyway, why not have a snack?". I managed to make the marshmallows the only slip up of the day, so I'm pleased with that.
Urban Ranger: Walked 45 minutes to coffee shop and back with pram and dog.
Gym / Other: Rest day, did some stretching.

Hey
So the baby is three months? I've been wondering how old. Is it getting better? I just dread those first three months......no sleep!! Ha. You are such a great example for me of how I can stick to vanilla NO-S while breast feeding!! Any hints?
Yep, he is 14 weeks tomorrow. There is not much sleep to be had around here at the moment - it was actually better at 9 weeks than it is now. But, he is smiling and gurgling and generally super cute, so there is a huge upside as well!
Don't be too hard on yourself in the first few weeks post partum. Just pick yourself up and try again each day.
Hmm, tips for sticking to No S. Well, It's only been a month, so I'm not sure I'm the poster child here! A couple of things I've done:
1. No snacky or sweet things in the house. If there is cake on the counter, I'll cave in for sure at 3am. But I'm never going to jump in the car at 3am to buy a snack.
2. If I feel hungry at night wake ups, I have a glass of water, then a drink of milk (whole milk, not skim). Just a small glass takes the edge off being hungry, otherwise I can't fall back to sleep.
3. Substantial, well balanced firsts. So, a typical breakfast for me is a small serve of steel cut oats or rolled oat porridge, fruit (e.g. a banana, some peaches), a slice of whole wheat bread and an egg.
4. Set up all my meals on a plate (no virtual plating), and either get my husband to help or put the baby on his play mat, so I can eat properly from the plate with utensils. Standing up eating was a huge trap for me, especially for snacking, and having no idea how much I'd eaten.
You are setting up good habits now, so you'll be one step ahead of me! I'm sure you'll do great.

I had an "aha" moment today. I was running a bunch of errands at a local mall, so of course walked past a million and one food outlets. And each time I saw something tempting (like the donut shop, the sweet shop, the ice cream store, the cafe with fancy cakes) I thought to myself "if I really want x treat I can come to the mall and get it on Saturday". Immediately, the pull of the donut or whatever seemed to be switched off, as if by saying "not now" instead of "no" my appetite is able to let it go.
And you know what, I probably won't go to the mall on Saturday for those crappy donuts, I'll probably get a slice of Tuscan Apple Cake at my favorite cafe and enjoy it with a hot chocolate. But just knowing that I could go back and get that donut makes all the difference. Reinhard's system is ingenious in using something so simple to tame the appetite so effectively.

Probably my most successful S-Day so far. I had French toast for breakfast (with cinnamon sugar). I had a slice of cake after Father's Day lunch with the family, and it was a lovely banana toffee cake baked by my SIL. Then I had a small bowl of yoghurt after dinner. This feels harder at the moment. My son is going through some kind of growth spurt (3.5 months) and is waking 3+ times a night at the moment to nurse. That's on top of every 2 - 3 hours during the day. Especially at night wake ups (like right now) I feel hungry and think a lot about snacking. I haven't caved in yet though. Ugh, better get back to bed.

I was given a raspberry muffin today at mother's group. So, I wrapped it up and brought it home. It's all set for tomorrow's breakfast. I love that No-S gives me an option for that situation: if I really want to enjoy a sweet, I can take it home as a treat for the weekend. I don't have to cut or modify another meal to compensate, I don't have to complete a set amount of exercise to "earn" it, I don't have to get a diet version of the muffin that is fat free with fake sugars, I don't have to turn down a lovely homemade muffin that my friend brought to share and I don't have to feel any guilt when I do enjoy that muffin tomorrow. It's such a nice feeling.

The raspberry muffin was lovely for breakfast yesterday.
Also, I made lemon butter during the week (lemon curd to some) and waited until Saturday to enjoy some. Yum!
Last night was a friend's feast of meat (he's from Portugal), and we enjoyed eating meat fresh from the spit with our hands. He also made the most delicious mini custard tarts. Very glad it was a Saturday!
This morning I'm going for morning tea with some good friends and their babies.

I went to lunch today in our city's big central park (King's Park) with my husband and baby. They had a fantastic wildflower display growing through the main grassed area. Beautiful. I love Spring.
Urban Ranger - walk morning and evening with dog total 1 hr. 1/2 hour at the park with baby (mostly up a very steep hill!).
Gym / Other - 2 clients (6 - 8pm)

Thanks tobiasmom! I've never been to Alice (it's a long way from here in the West), but I've heard it is amazing.

Completed my second set of 21 days, so I've worked out my weight loss again (I weigh every day, but don't pay any attention to individual values, I use the data to calculate a trend). According to my trend values I've lost another 4 pounds, taking the total to 10 pounds since I started this in late July.
This past few weeks has become easier. I think I've retrained my appetite, so although I get hungry about an hour before meal time, I don't get so many random hunger pangs through the day and night. This week in particular has been great. Normally I spend at least some time during the week thinking about the treats I would like or can have on the weekend. This week I've almost been surprised it is Friday, and can't really think of anything I'm craving to have tomorrow.
Yesterday at lunch I made myself a great sandwich - whole wheat bread with pumpkin seeds, leg ham, cheddar cheese, whole egg mayo, rocket from our garden, juicy tomatoes, cucumber and beetroot. As I was eating it, I suddenly thought "hey, this is a treat!". Sure, it wasn't sugary or decadent in a typical treat way, but it was absolutely delicious and I felt kind of spoiled each time I took another tasty bite. I didn't have to worry that the mayo was full fat or think about the serving size. I just ate and enjoyed. Then it hit me - this is an eating plan where everything I eat can be a treat. Without the constant sugary snacks messing with my palate, all my meals can taste this awesome!
Urban Ranger - morning walk with dog, 1 hour walking with pram (lots of hills!)
Gym / Other - 1 hour training a client

Thanks tobiasmom, I'm really loving No S so far.
We're off on holiday in the morning for 2 weeks. I'm going to keep a log of green and red days on paper, and check back in when we get back to town (and our internet connection). I'm hoping that the habits formed over the past month and a half will stick enough to at least maintain while I'm away. Having lost 10 pounds already is a big motivator to stay with No S.

Wow, what a week. The bub woke to eat every two hours on Thursday night, I thought I was going to go nuts. He hasn't slept anything more than a 3.5 hr stretch now for 7 weeks (he stopped the nice long 5 hr stretches at about 12 weeks, and he's 19 weeks now). This isn't just a growth spurt - he's eating all the time!
I put a lot of effort into staying positive and reminding myself it is only for a short period of my life, but the constantly broken sleep is really wearing me down. I was so starving on Thursday night, but kept reminding myself that breakfast was only a few hours away.
It's true what Reinhard says, No-S is actually a nice little bit of order and routine in the midst of chaos. It is the one thing I can stay on top of. I don't need sugar, I just need sleep.
Well, that was a bit whiny. Hope everyone is having a nice weekend.

Our little guy has quite bad eczema, and all our efforts at removing irritants, keeping him dry and moisturized and so on haven't really helped. I was intolerant of casein (cow milk protein) when I was little, so I'm going to try cutting all cow milk and casein products out of my diet. The proteins can be passed through breast milk, and it will take up to 4 weeks for them to be gone from my system and the baby's system.
I'm not too worried, as my No-S habits are firmly in place, but it is a bit of a challenge. No milk, butter, cheese, yoghurt, chocolate, baked goods (unless they are casein free). Also, many babies who are intolerant of milk are also not tolerant of soy, so I've been advised not to replace with a bunch of soy equivalents. This will mean a big change to my "default" meals. It also means that my glass of milk if I'm hungry in the middle of the night is at an end.
Anyway, it will only take 4 weeks to check if this is the solution. And if it does work, it is totally worth it!

I'm struggling a bit this week with the introduction of the "casein free" experiment. I really want to do it, because it is important to me to rule out causes of the eczema for our poor little guy. But, I'm finding that having to modify a lot of meals is making me focus on food again and feel a little rebellious. Turns out casein is in all sorts of non-obvious things, like bottled pasta sauces and things like that. There is definitely a thought process that goes "ugh, there are so many rules and things I can't have, stuff it, I deserve a few chips if I can't have any milk". I'm trying to be aware of it and remind myself that stuffing up No-S really isn't what I want, even if I'm feeling childish about some extra food rules.
I think things will get easier once I find my "new defaults" and don't have to think about things too much.

I've decided I'll just use the habitcal. Things are going well, and the No-S habit is well established now, so I'm going to do as Reinhard suggested and only post here when I get a red day. Hopefully this means I won't be posting too often on this thread!
My weight trending calculation says I have lost 11lb, and my rate of loss is starting to tail off (as one would expect when getting close to goal weight). I now weight about 60.5kg (133 pounds), which at 172 cm tall gives me a BMI of 20.4. I'm finding No-S to be a fairly effortless plan, so I hope I can use it to stabilize at this weight.

Had a completely green week. Looking forward to some treats this weekend, although with the "no cow dairy" thing, it is hard to come up with suitable treats, so I'll be baking them myself.
In good news, removing casein (cow dairy protein) appears to have fixed our son's eczema! I'm delighted to have it sorted, however a tiny part of me is a bit annoyed, as now that I know it works I'll have to keep it up until I stop breast feeding (or he grows out of it). My mother tells me I grew out of my casein intolerance at about 18 months.
My trend line tells me I've lost another pound to reach 132 pounds, for a total of 12 pounds. That puts me back at my pre-pregnancy weight, which was my initial goal. Since I'm not counting any calories or such, it will be interesting for me to find out where I stabilize by continuing the No-S habits.

Hi Ironchef,
You're doing so well! I admire that you removed casein from your diet. I would find that very hard.
While I wasn't looking at the boards I really missed your comments - they were always insightful and inspiring.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks eschano! Removing casein was hard that first week, but now that I see such great results in our son's skin condition, I'm so motivated to keep going. I've worked out my new "dietary defaults", so habit is taking over. Eating out is tricky though; probably something I could afford to do less of anyway.
Thanks tobiasmom! Wow, only a few weeks to go now, how exciting!

Thursday 25th - RED
We had a friend over for a drink this afternoon, and I did strawberries in champagne and orange. One strawberry in my drink I would have considered ok, kind of like the olive in a martini. However, the strawberries were on the table while we had our drinks, and I ate 4 - 5 more while we sat there. So, that's a snack, not a garnish!
Sure, it's fruit, but snacking while I have an afternoon drink is not a habit I want to create. It could just as easily have been cheese and crackers, dip, or whatever.

hey tobiasmom! the weekend was lovely, although pretty warm here (35 deg C). I baked some banana cake that was non dairy, so I could have a slice, as it was my mom's birthday.
Sleep is still pretty erratic. Some nights (like last night) we do quite well and just have two or three quick wake ups. I know he can do it though, as he's slept 5 and 6 hour stretches before (and even a 7 hour stretch, one time!). I'm really looking forward to next month, when he'll be old enough to start solids. Hopefully that might contribute to some longer night sleeps.

Ironchef, Stopping by here to say Hi and thanks for posting on my thread. Looks like you are doing well, and congrats on the new baby.
Something I used to do that helped my babies sleep longer... I was nursing and I would get tired in the evening, so I don't think I had as much milk. I would make a small bottle for the baby- just at night. Baby was usually hungry enough for another 4 oz. and he slept longer.

Hey Sweetness, thanks for stopping by.
A green week here, and another 1/2 pound lost. I checked my body fat % on the scales at the gym this morning and I'm sitting at 29%, which I'm really pleased about. My secondary goal was to get my body fat % below 30%. Now I need to think about building me some muscles!
And, just for eschano, here is a full list of my Saturday S's!
Breakfast - same as N day, but with a teaspoon of golden syrup on my oats. Sweets.
Mid-morning - 2 dairy free mint slice biscuits. Snack and a Sweet.
Lunch - same as N-day, except with honey on my peanut butter. Sweets.
Mid-arvo - 1 slice dairy free orange and poppy seed cake. Snack and a Sweet.
Dinner - same as N day.
After dinner - mint slice biscuit. Sweet and Seconds!
ETA: and a 375ml can of lemon squash. Sweet!
