Naomi Wolf years ago wrote a feminist work called The Beauty Myth in which she asserted that women had been diverted from being able to examine their real needs and rights to an obsessive concern with trying to meet a beauty standard that could never have been as generalized without the advent of the mirror and modern media. It's so culturally determined! And very challenging. There are a small fraction of women who aren't that much affected by it. I'd bet there are some studies of them, but I don't think anything can really explain why some people are immune. They can probably trace it to certain attitudes they have but not why they have those attitudes.
A psychologist named Judith Rodin wrote a book on how to escape from the trap of negative body image. I started it during the school year and was too swamped to finish it. Also, it's not my big issue anymore, but I like knowing stuff to help refute the argument for cosmetic weight loss, which I don't get into with too many people. She said in her academic circles she was looked down on by some colleagues because the topic wasn't considered serious enough. Interesting to me is that she didn't turn it into the main focus of her career. She went on to turn her attention to different problems and now heads the Rockefeller Foundation! So I guess she led by example.

Thanks for the info oolala. After my rave on your thread. Really, i'd like to be like Judith Rodin and move on to other things! It drives me crazy how much time i spend thinking about food etc. this should be how NoS works i'm hoping. I put these simple rules in place and then train myself not to think about it the rest of the time...

I wouldn't call it a rave.
If we lose you because you've moved on to thinking about other things, at least come back after a few months and tell us what became more compelling!

I hate that when snacks call, but if you don't give them to much power the urge will pass..if that makes sense...acknowledge them and set the thought free by hanging on to the thought it becomes stronger and stronger...

Hi middleager! Hope you start to feel more upbeat soon! As I read through all of our check-ins, it seems that we all have low times now and then. It's almost like clockwork, probably hormonal fluctuations throughout our monthly cyles.
It usually helps me to tell myself I won't feel low for long. I always get my energy and optimism back.

Day 21 today! Hurray! Could not say I have exactly mastered it yet. This week will be my first week with 5 NoS days in a row. First there was christmas, then my wedding anniversary, then our 4 day hike, then my son's birthday.
Anyway, tomorrow I am going to add in meditation, something that I often start but haven't ever been able to establish as a habit. Theoretically at least, this shouldn't sap my willpower, so it shouldn't be too much of a risk. Aiming for 10 minutes once or twice a day, but not sure about S days. I thought better to try and do every day.

NoS in trundling along. I think my dinners are too big. I still wasn't hungry by breakfast time.
Meditation. If I get interrupted in the middle i am super-annoyed. Far more agitated than when I started. I bet Gandhi wasn't like that. Reliving hurt feelings from 1986 probably not really the point either. Never mind. Just keep swimming.

I have decided to make yesterday a red day, partly because I am tempted to ignore my transgression so I can keep on adding to my "run". I had a taste of cake mixture. So, back to day 1 today.
I don't mean i had a taste of cake mixture on purpose to have a red day. I mean i was going to ignore it and then decided i had better not.
Probably my longest run of trying to do meditation every day already at 3 days or whatever it is.

Success today. Fierce hunger for an hour before dinner though. I think it might be good to treat myself to something nice to drink for this time. I don't really want to set up an alcohol habit and I also want to avoid artificial sweeteners. Perhaps i could learn to like soda water and lemon?? Maybe diet tonic water would be ok because it doesn't taste sweet? Maybe i should just have hot drinks. Hmm
Meditation continues. Was feeling slightly smug but then tonight my brain was whizzing around - work problems, what colours suit me, the internet....also I think the dog is a little concerned about this new behaviour. I do it out of sight of the people of course but the dog follows me everywhere i go.

I bought myself a mister coffee latte machine and make myself one here and there..I do use the artificial flavorings, but I"m sure you could add your own vanilla extract, etc. Just a thought...for me I hate say it but a 100 calorie drink.
Have a great day!

I'm with NoSnacker on using coffee before dinner if I'm really hungry. I usually just pour what's left in the pot from the morning (maybe half a cup) then fill it the rest of the way with milk and microwave the whole thing. It does the trick every time. If the weather's warmer I make a big glass of ice water and add lemon.

I stupidly weighed myself today and have gained weight since i started. Thoughts going through my head of mods, fasts etc etc I am trying to just let them flow through and not let any of them stick! If anything seems like a truly brilliant idea i might add it to my list of possible new habits. I made a list of twelve at new years but my idea is only to try and add a new one every twenty one days at the most! Meditation was the first on the list. 5 days so far...
I did find out today i am supposed to do a 6.5 km fun run with my sister in a month. I have only been walking not running for ?about 6 months. So i strapped my heart rate monitor on and went out with the dog today. I have a running system where i keep my hr in a certain range so i only have to run for little bursts and walk most of the time. Actually it was fine. The main barrier is having to get changed which i don't have to do for a walk.
S day today. I made shortbread for everyone and tomorrow i plan lemon tart
I am drinking soda water and lemon as we speak and quite enjoying it but will probably move on to wine soon.

From past experience, keep doing what you are doing sticking to vanilla No S, which I think you are...it will all balance out.middleager wrote:Thoughts going through my head of mods, fasts etc etc I am trying to just let them flow through and not let any of them stick!
I hate the scale, because we could be doing so great, sticking to habit and get on the scale and let it totally derail us.
The thoughts are just thoughts, as long as you don't hang on to them they will go away..when we hang on to them that is when trouble sets in.
Keep up the good work..it will all be good.

You cannot control what thoughts arise in you unbidden nor get rid of them. They go away anyway. The art is to drop yourself into the part of you that is aware of them. Thoughts can never know themselves. My teacher tells us that they are basically sounds that appear in our awareness and then disappear. Most of the time, they are no more important than soap bubbles that appear and burst. We think our thoughts ARE us, but they are not.
And actually, being present for the thoughts of the past or ANY thoughts is exactly the purpose of meditation. After awhile, we begin to be less interested in the content of the thoughts and more interested in just being aware. It's possible then that fewer thoughts arise, but that is not necessary.
Or at least, that's what I aspire to.

Bump, middleager--here's your old thread. And your last post was, "stupid scales". And the one before that was about mods and gaining weight. I think it's pretty clear why you were discouraged and checked out for awhile.

Ok then I'll use the old check-in! Learning from history and all that!
So day three of take 2 is an s day. I feel absolutely stuffed after a social dinner. Veges today capsicum, tomato, spinach, cucumber and i don't know if I should count chilli beans.
Auto you asked about running with my sister - maybe I should ask her again. I'm on week 7 of the 5k 101 podcast running programme so almost up to 30 minutes. Yay!

Day 7 of take two. Hurray! A whole week. I need to reward myself. I think with some nice boots to wear with trousers. I am sick of wearing red doc martins to work. Maybe i can get something a bit more lightweight and a bit more green.
Some of these n days are hard. I have to reming myself that i will not starve waiting for the next meal. And i need to drink more.

I bought silver boots instead of green. On sale
Thursday was all clear, friday i am not sure how to mark it. I went out for dinner and had antipasti and half a plate sized pizza. Theoretically could have all fit on one plate but morally probably a fail.
Today is an S day and i am going crazy on the sugar. So far including some fruit bread with honey, a biscuit, a sweet cake from the french bakery and a piece of butterscotch cheesecake.
Think my reward for the next week will be some running tights for winter.

I spent pretty much all weekend eating stuff because I was "allowed". Oh well. Research shows that the difference between people who are gaining weight and people who aren't is actually weekday eating as everyone overeats on the weekends. So here's to a good week coming up. Today ok so far.
I am sitting here to keep my 12 year old company while he finishes his homework before I can take the dog out for her walk.

I know it's been several months, but just wanted to send you a note of encouragement as we enter the holiday season. I f you gave up, don't feel too terrible. I started my first real attempt just before Thanksgiving of 2008, and had only two or three compliant weeks in more than a year until I committed Dec. 26 of 2009, probably about 10 lbs. heavier than when I started. Learning to eat less permanently is not a linear process for most people!
