Amy's 2017 Check-In

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Amy's 2017 Check-In

Post by Amy3010 » Sun Jan 01, 2017 7:39 am

Happy New Year, everyone! So nice to have a fresh start - and on an S-day to boot!

I decided to ask to join in on the one year challenge for this year. One year of committing to sticking with No-S and not being swayed by other fleeting fads or diet techniques. My main goal is sanity around food but losing a few kilos would be a nice side effect :wink:

No, in all honesty I've been maintaining a 10 kg loss the past ten years, but I never managed to get all the way into the healthy BMI range and that is a big goal of mine. I got closest to it the year I was very consistent on No-S and was running a lot (2012). Since then, due to injuries, I had to really change up my exercise, which had a big impact on my weight - and not just in calories burned. I found myself fighting depression without my favorite mood booster, running, and quickly put on weight.

I think I've finally got the exercise part of the puzzle figured out (I can run again but have to be very careful to balance it with other forms of movement like yoga, swimming and walking) and so now is a great time to get back to a full commitment to No-S habits. I look forward to seeing where this year will take me!

Thanks, Tobiasmom! It's so nice to see all the enthusiasm and some familiar faces on the board right now.

My first S day of the year was okay - we went to my sister-in-law's and then my mother-in-law's and then home and was so tired went right to bed. Food was definitely not what I would eat at home and definitely much more, but I didn't stress about it.

Now it's time to get down to good habits...

Yes, Zippadee, let's!

Day 1 = green!

B:pancakes with sliced banana, fig, walnuts
L: pumpkin soup, hummus sandwich, clementine
D: polenta, mushrooms, spinach, veg croquettes, salad

Exercise: yoga

Today will be a bit tricky as I have to navigate the kitchen at my volunteer work - there are lots of goodies there right now from the holidays. I tried Merry's baggie technique last Friday when I was there, and that worked really well, so I may do that again if there is anything especially good. Just must remember to have a baggie in my purse!

Hey there! I have a brick of polenta to use AND mushrooms. I must make it! I had spaghetti with mushroom marinara tonight. Love those mushrooms!

Glad you had a good day. I flopped a bit today...but onward!

Yes, mushrooms are awesome, Tobiasmom!

Tuesday = green

B: crackers with veg spread, clementine
L: pb&j sandwich, banana
D: veg croquettes, salad, red cabbage, potatoes

Ex: yoga + walking

The stuff in the kitchen at my volunteer gig didn't even tempt me yesterday - maybe because a lot of it's been sitting there since Christmas, yuck. When I got home at 4:30 I had a V-8 to tide me over til dinner, which really hit the spot.

Thanks, Tobiasmom!

Wednesday = green! First time in a while I've had three solid green days in a row.

B=toast, clementine, 2 figs
L= pumpkin soup, pb&j sandwich
D= 6 crackers with veg spread, 6 olives, clementine (split into two, half before yoga class, half after)

Ex: yoga class

Had a lot of stress yesterday but it was actually to the degree that it made me not really feel like eating, which is unusual for me. My sister-in-law (age 51) fell and broke her leg in four places, has already had surgery and will have more on Monday. Feel so bad for her. Will drive out to see her in hospital with my son (she is his godmother) this afternoon. She asked me to bring her some healthy food! So glad there is at least something I can do.

Hi Amy - thanks for stopping over on my thread. It is wonderful that your sister-in-law is turning to you for healthy food - sorting that out will benefit both of you!

I love yoga too - I use video routine from Yoga with Adriene on-line. It's lovely to go to a class though - hope you enjoyed your class.

Hi Rawcookie! I use Yoga with Adriene, too! Are you doing her Revolution series for January?

Both Thursday and Friday were green! My first fully green week in a long time, which feels good.

Friday's food:
B: coconut yogurt, toast, kiwi, clementine
L: salad with beans and red cabbage
D: individual pizza with mushrooms and onions

Ex: swimming (42 laps)

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Hiya, thanks for encouraging me on my thread.

Yes, I am going the Yoga with Adriene 'Revolution' - I'm a bit behind, just done Day 5 - and it's tougher than 30 days of Yoga Camp was, but good. It feels more kind of emotional - what do you think?

Thanks Zippadee, my sister-in-law's surgery last night went well and she had a good night afterwards. Hopefully I'll hear more today, but am just relieved to know it went well.

Monday = RED :oops:

I was fine all day until I went to book club, where I was planning on having an S-event, so I could partake (at our book club, the person who chose the book brings treats and they're usually related in some way to the book, and the people often go to a big effort to make something special, which makes me feel like a heel refusing every time), and that would have been fine, except I came home and had a glass of wine to wind down and a mindless snack with it. I was waiting to hear news on my SIL and was a bit nervous. So can't really, in good conscience, call it an S-event, or even an S day. So it's red.

Thank goodness book club is only every six weeks. But I'll be thinking of ways to handle it better next time, because I am very aware that it's in those difficult moments, if we can be strong and do something different than our default mindless behavior, that that is the point of change.

Onward and upwards, though, let's make today green!

Hi Amy

Just wanted to say thanks for the supportive post on my thread.

My daughter has a lingering cough now too. She's convinced it'll never go away. I told her yep she'll still be coughing at her prom and her wedding and even while she's birthing her first child. I'm such a fun mom. ;)

Hopefully yours won't be quite so long.

Still coughing ;-) ...and yesterday was red :oops:

Went off the rails a bit after yoga class last night. Only my second red day this month, so I am determined not to have any more. Four more chances to get green in January, so let's go!
