Fondue's Check-in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Fondue's Check-in

Post by Fondue » Thu Aug 04, 2011 8:22 pm

I'm a bit of a long-time lurker in these parts. According to my profile I joined the site in Jan 09, but I'm pretty sure that I first came across NoS a year or so before that. I've dipped in and out of the diet, and found it great for maintaining my weight but kept abandoning it in favour of more dramatic but less sustainable methods, especially low carbing.

I started again at the beginning of April this year when my baby was 12 months old and I still had plenty of 'baby weight' (aka cake...) to lose, despite on-and-off low-carbing for several months. I just couldn't face having to eat 'weird food' for the long haul, so I decided to try to make NoS work for me and this time, it seems, I might have cracked it.

Since 4th April (I weigh in on the 4th of every month, not really sure why) I've lost 4.8 kilos (about 10 pounds). 3 kilos of that was in the last month when I seem to have really got into the swing of eating moderately, on N and S days.

However I'm quite nervous about becoming complacent, especially as we have a busy month coming up socially, so I plan to keep myself on the straight and narrow by starting a check-in thread. Here goes...

Thursday 4th August Success
B: Slice wholegrain toast, handful of green grapes, skinny latte
L: Slice wholegrain toast, chicken & noodle soup, golden kiwi fruit
D: Spinach pie with cucumber & tomato salad

Welcome, Fondue.

Congrats on your success thus far :D I think the accountability of the daily check in thread will serve you well - or at least it has me.

Best wishes on your healthy journey.
