Lurker, finally joining in!
After a year or more of lurking, I've decided today is the day to join you all! I could use some support, and I have been so impressed by how supportive (and non-judgmental) this community is to each other. Thanks for that. I've "played" with NoS for a year or so without truly committing. I hate New Year's Resolutions, so I'm sliding this in early and with enthusiasm!
A bit about myself: I'm a fifth grade teacher (29 years and still love it!), 51, have 2 grown college-age kids (one lives at home with some special needs and one is away in grad. school), am married, and have about 25 pounds to lose. They've been creeping on for quite a few years; I shave 5 or 10 off (a little portion control, a little online WW, a little low-carb...meh) and 12-15 finds its way back on...you know.
I also have migraines and see a specialist for them. If I don't catch the headaches early with meds (within an 1 hour or so), I am guaranteed 2-4 days of misery which my medication does not always resolve. The symptoms are not always the same, the medication expensive...I wait too long. Shoving sugar into my system is often my go-to, stupid strategy when I get the shakes, cold sweats, and the beginnings of a headache; my panic and denial mode. Often, my migraines are triggered by a subtle drop in blood sugar (diagnosed), weather changes, and (of course) hormonal shifts. That, a love of sugar, stress-eating, and not consistently committing to exercising are my personal challenges.
So I am recommitting to NoS with the caveat that if I get an aura, shakes, whatever, at any time, I will take my meds early and will eat a small carb if I need it. (Often half a granola bar or a few glucose tabs will do the trick). I'd like to commit to vanilla NoS, so I'll start by doing it whenever I can but use common sense strategies when I need them, get some regular exercise, and wean myself from the 2 chocolate squares I eat at night with tea.
I could really use some kindly support since restrictions of any kind on eating make me feel panicky, and I have gotten used to feeling (and believing) that I can't do this. I look forward to giving support in return!

welcome, good luck and don't be so hard on yourself...
anything that challenges your old habits, takes repeated efforts and you will have many setbacks and failures along the way, but hopefully they will become less and less over time...
commit to changing those habits, but be kind to yourself when you make mistakes.

I, too, toyed around with No S for more than a year before truly committing three years ago on Dec. 26. I'm the lowest weight I've been in at least a decade, I think, and had the best holiday eating in years, too. T I see things only getting better, and I think I'm far enough into it not to be still in the honeymoon phase. This is all after menopause.

Hullo!
No S seems to attract mostly men and women of a (ahem) certain age. Maybe there's something about that higher estrogen level which compels us to adopt extreme diets.
Then when the estrogen goes away we realize, whew, what was THAT all about.
I know there are many younger women (under 40) who have adopted No S so I am sorta joking.

I think it also takes a long time to realize that diets don't help most people learn to eat differently permanently. There is so much media attention given to them.

Yes, I feel like I have been around the block (several times!) with various forms of diets: ww online, portion control, low carb, Livestrong calorie counting...I lost weight on all of them, and most of them were experiments I tried during my summer breaks. They were like summer projects; as soon as I went back to the classroom each fall, I would just fall away in a matter of weeks. I couldn't seem to keep up with these approaches-too busy (so I told myself anyway). NoS is simple, I have to eat anyway, and it doesn't add more work to a busy day. I feel smart when I am on NoS, like I have discovered an elegant solution to my problem instead of some complex algorithm I need to calculate and track. Of course, it's all just talk unless I actually do it!
I'm a teacher, too, and No S works very well with my schedule. Luckily, we don't have lunch until 12:30 p.m. I might have more problems if we ate earlier, as a lot of schools do. But I find that any exercise schedule I get into in the summer goes out the window when I start work after the break. For one thing, we start at the end of JULY, and August and September are our hottest months. I'm in unairconditioned classrooms a few hours and day and it kills me. But I'm not going to figure that out now.
