Simpless's check-in
Success on my first day (yesterday) back on No-S. I realized how much I had been snacking. Maybe that's why I failed in the past. Hopefully this check-in will help, this forum, and the book when I find it.

Hi and welcome. Usually alcoholic drinks are not counted as "seconds" or not, though there is another everyday system for limiting alcohol consumption. Mostly, for the purposes of the NoS diet, drinks that are not very sweet, are neutral.

Hi and welcome! I agree with osoniye A couple glasses of wine, milk or coffee is fine between meals and definitely make it easier to from one meal to the next esp in the beginning.
The hunger for me was pretty brutal in the beginning but now it's just a mild stirring now. Remember it's ok to pile those plates to get you through at first.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the encouraging input! Third day was successful. I'm still hungry between meals but either I'm getting used to it or its a little less. I'm trying to drink more water. Some serious family drama is going on right now and I'm very emotional. I'm wondering if some of it could be hunger related.

Glad you're going to read the book! There's LOTS on these boards about S Days. The gist is: don't worry about them! Just take care of N Days, focus your limited habit-forming energy on N Day compliance, and absolutely free yourself from guilt or restriction on S Days. For at least a fair number of months, if not years.

sounds like you are off to a good track. best piece of advice i have is don't shame yourself ever for having one slip up or two... that's what leads to overeating and worse binges. just say "ok that happened" and move on. i find that with overeating i am my worst enemy when i start to shame myself for behaviors.

I think I like N days better.
What a great quote! That should be one of the "phases of NoS" that KCCC describes.

NoS success Tuesday. I looked up the phases of No-S KCCC posted - so helpful, thanks! I have that "diet mentality" and need to find my normal. I tried explaining No-S to my husband, but told him I'm afraid of jinxing myself by talking about it. He said, yeah don't talk about it. I laughed because I know he just doesn't want to hear about another diet. That's ok. I can come to the board

Hahaha, that made me laugh. I know exactly what you mean with "he doesn't want to hear about another diet". One of my best friends just doesn't have the patience to do NoS so she goes in between overeating and snacking and crazy diets every month and I just can't hear it anymore.
I think you're right - diet head is a dangerous thing. I know you'll get to freedom head soon!

Vanilla NoS means that you follow NoS without any modifications. Some people for example have floating S days or allow themselves one treat per day as a modification or count calories or bites. As far as I can tell from the boards vanilla NoS has a great success rate.
I wouldn't worry about modifications until you have at least 6 months under your belt.

I love this comment! So many of us try to describe "that feeling I'm not used to" but I think I like the way you put it best!Simpless wrote: My hunger or that feeling I'm not used to, seems to be less.
Since our hunger actually LESSENS as we are on NoS longer and longer, it goes to show how habituated our hunger is, based on what our bodies are used to receiving food-wise. Assuming we are meeting our caloric needs, hunger becomes a very routined and predictable part of our days, starting an hour or so before the next meal.

Made it through the weekend S days; listened to a podcast on mods. I know its early for me, but I thought not eating out of a container (like a potato chip bag) on S days, might help. Any thoughts or experiences? Monday was good, a vanilla day, even with unexpected family here for dinner. No one notices when you don't take seconds. I like that.

Keep hanging in there Simpless!!! I remember in my first few months on NoS I hit a few "hard spots" where the desire to snack came roaring back. I think it was about 3 weeks, and about 6 weeks. Each time I made it through, I felt more capable than ever that--"I can do this! I can stick with it! I can see myself NoSing 10 years from now." Your confidence will build as you keep habit-building day after day.

Hi again Simpless--I am quoting myself from a few posts ago to answer your question about modifying your S Days. I had a talk with my colleague who always gives up sweets for lent and she said something really interesting that I think applies to your current hard time:
"You would think that I'd be desperate for sweets at day 40 but I always find I don't need them anymore. Desperation comes around day 20 and you just have to stick it out."
So true for NoS as well. I had let NoS slide a little and only recommitted in January. Now I find it really easy but the first two months were a bit of a struggle. So hang in there - day 20 is nearly here and over

Wednesday - success, a little easier than Tuesday. Thank you eschano and automatedeating (may I call you auto?) for your encouraging words! With years of dieting its hard not to look for a way, like a mod, to make weight loss faster. I think I will do best on Vanilla NoS . I have a health screening this afternoon, which I have to fast for. Six hours without eating is a little more than I'm used to. This will be tricky, hope they don't offer me any cookies afterwards.

Hi, wanted to stop by your thread and say hi ! Also want to agree that one doesn't really how much they are snacking until they stop (your beginning posts on this thread really hit home to me.) I don't know how many times I walk into the kitchen and just open the cabinet and stare into it.
Not hungry, just curious as to what I could be snacking on.
But I am staying clean and really really trying hard to avoid the diet soda, another no reason to do it but I do habit.
My best to you,

Yesterday was my 21st day on No S. I definitely prefer N days. It is difficult for me to focus on habit rather than numbers. Since I started, my weight dropped 4 lbs., but after the weekend it is back up almost to where I started. I did some mindless snacking on the weekend, but didn't expect that much damage Well, its a new week.
I wouldn't worry about Monday weigh-ins too much. It's mostly water retention in my experience. I weigh myself daily, however, I subconsciously pay most attention to my Wednesday weight as it's right bang in the middle.

Tuesday - success. I think I could have been satisfied with less on my dinner plate, but it made it easier seeing my husband snacking in the evening. I took a chance and weighed myself today and was back down from that depressing Monday weigh-in. Thanks eschano! I'm still trying to get over a cold, so soup sounds good tonight.
Wednesday - Success. A friend was talking to me yesterday about a diet her daughter was on and how, even though its very healthy, she could never do it. I was tempted to bring up NoS, but thought I should wait until I'm more of a "testimony". It just reminded me of how many diets I have tried and how simple NoS is.
Thursday and Friday - success. I was wishing Friday was an S day because I really wanted something more. Evenings are the most tempting time for me, but seeing success, even though its slow, is helping. It seems Spring is taking forever to arrive here, but its not raining so I hope to get some exercise walking the dogs and working in the yard this weekend. Hope you all enjoy your S days

I still like N days better. Unexpected (but welcomed) family here last night meant unplanned food which I ate too much of. I know it was an S day, but I wanted to be more in control. Today I thought I'd compensate by not eating as much, but a 5 am call regarding a family member's health meant only five hours sleep. Then, too much coffee, too many sweets, and no energy. I'd like to sleep until tomorrow.

Don't try to compensate for a bad eating day. That's not a good long-term success plan. Just mark it and move on. Furthermore, you can't fail on an S Day. Try to save up your habit-forming energy for N Days and not scrutinize or try to control your S Days.

Thursday - Success. My son, who works with me, offered me an extra order of fries he had. At first I said no, but they smelled so good I changed my mind. I thought I would take them home and make them part of my lunch. I wrapped them up so I couldn't smell them and possibly eat them. By the time I got home for lunch, I decided to have leftover chicken casserole, vegetables, and fresh strawberries. I know I could have had the fries, but "the plate" looked so much better without them. I'm loving NoS and this forum.

I enjoyed the weekend although I am still a little fearful of them. Since we also had a celebration, there were more treats around, and I found myself eating more but not really enjoying everything. So maybe I just need to be more selective if I want them. I found myself in the kitchen more, opening cupboards just because I knew I could snack.
Monday - Success. A little rough getting back on track but good. Thanks for the support eschano, auto, MerryKat, Strawberry Roan

I know some of us get discouraged when the weight isn't melting off as fast as we'd like. I was thinking of the "sometimes" on days that start with S. I know there are no rules on S days, but I want to remember that S's are optional.
My husband, just trying to help ha-ha, asked if I could do another diet, then when I've lost some weight, continue with No S. I really don't think that's the solution. But, I really enjoyed some of the recipes on a plant-based diet we were on for a month and am going to try to make them on N and/or S days.

Tuesday - Success. I'm in my 7th week of No S and starting to feel more comfortable with it even on S days which made me kind of nervous before. The inspiration I get from this forum is so helpful! The weight is slow coming off but it is coming off, and I know what foods I need to eat to satisfy and still be good for me. Also, putting in some extra activity time (walking and yard work) is bound to pay off

7 weeks, that's great, Simpless!
Just a heads-up, I do remember having a few tough spots in the 6-8 week stretch...where my snacking urges came back a little bit. I don't know if that happens to most other people or not, but just so you're aware it might be a possibility.

It's very slow weight loss but it is weight loss so hang in there I often feel like dreading on the same spot as it goes up and down and depending on the day you weight etc. However, I'm just back from my holiday where people see me ever 4 months or so and they all saw the weight loss! Can you imagine? That felt amazing!!!

Thanks eschano -
Welcome back! Hope you had a great time. That must have been nice having others notice your weight loss. I haven't lost enough yet but someday Yes, I just never know what that scale is going to say, just can't seem to get away from the habit of checking. I'm not going to worry about that habit now, though.

Friday - Success.
We have a routine of eating supper late (like 7) which seems to help me from getting too hungry in the evening. But since No S, I get so hungry close to dinner I feel weak. I'm trying to drink water when that happens.
Also, my S days have calmed down and I know I'm eating quite a bit less daily than before, but I've only lost about 5.5 - 6.0 lbs. since March 10. I've heard people say that with years of dieting your body likes to "hold on" to those pounds. I don't know if that's true, but I do know its harder the older I get. So its now or never

Simpless, 5 pounds in 1.5 months sounds pretty awesome! Those are pounds that won't come back, they were slowly lost as your body adjusted to regular mealtimes. NoS is S-L-O-W, and that's one of the things I love about it most! We're in this for the long haul, right?

Thanks auto - Yes we ARE in it for the long haul Lots of support here is helping me stay with it I know.
Today my husband announced he was going to make the rest of today an N day, that was after he finished his Arby's cherry turnover. I have mixed feelings about him joining me I think because he'll probably drop 5 pounds in the first week. But if he's serious maybe it will help both of us, at least there won't be so much sugar in the house

Oh definitely let him join you. My boyfriend starts doing it just unconsciously but I love that he is getting healthier now.
Your husband will probably drop a lot more than you in a lesser time frame but that's just nature. Don't compare an apple with an orange You're doing well and you'll be a healthy family!

How neat that your husband may be joining you in this No S way of eating. I can understand the concern about him dropping weight faster than you, but you probably already know that it can be challenging to live/eat No S when those around you are eating seconds, sweets, and snacks on a regular basis regardless of how you're eating--sometimes even encouraging you to do the same. I think this has the potential to be an encouragement to you. I hope it works well for both of you.

Oh, so sorry! It's terribly difficult to see your dear pet in pain, I'm sure. I can imagine that you lost your appetite from that.
Hopefully they'll get her on some good pain meds soon--and surgery?

Thanks for all the well wishes for my dog. She's a little better today, already on meds for her back, and after a long talk with Vet feel surgery wouldn't be the best route. Rest, meds and therapy. No walks for 3 months is going to be rough.

Oh poor her! I hope this route works for you! My former dog (RIP) had ligament surgery and unfortunately never fully recovered. I think we walked him too fast and too much but the Vet recommended it. Usually, the dogs know best themselves.
Great that you stuck to NoS anyways.

My dog is 11, was born deaf, and has had back and neck problems for a few years. I wish she could talk, but she has her way of telling me things and for now she wants to keep going. Being on NoS, I think has even helped me deal with this. It simplifies my eating, helping me not eat emotionally, which usually just brings more emotion. I don't know if that makes sense.

Saturday - Knowing it was an S day, I bought a favorite snack food but really went overboard on that and other things. I know it was an S day, but ugh. So much for "sometimes". I'm tempted to make up for it today, but know that's probably not a good idea. That's an old diet behavior that never seems to work.

Right, I find it easier to say this when it's not me, so here goes:
You ARE taking more steps forward than back. Be gentle with yourself.

Auto - you always seem to say the right words I've never been the most confident or positive kind of person, so being gentle with myself came back to me yesterday. No S is the way I want and need to live. It's simple, and sensible. But it takes time, and its easy to get impatient.

Thanks eschano, hope yours was good too. Mine was a little calmer than last, enjoyed a sweet time with my mother and my daughter. Really didn't need that last cupcake though.
Then was up with my dog a good part of the night. Her back leg that she's been using due to her torn knee kept giving out, so considering what to do now, made appointment with Vet. Lots of emotion
