Cattywompus' Check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Cattywompus' Check in

Post by Cattywompus » Sun Aug 30, 2015 11:53 am

Hello :)

I'm not a total newbie here - I've been here before, but using a different name. I'm hoping that doesn't break some forum rule I didn't spot - if so, I'm really sorry - I just wanted a fresh start and didn't want to start out with the baggage of previous attempts.

I chose my new username after reading a post from Oolala53, whose wise words included "cattywompus" to describe her eating habits at one point, and I felt it was a fabulous description of how I feel right now.

Recently, I've discovered that the cause of various tummy woes and dermatitis flares was wheat, so I've been wheat-free for almost 13m. That, while making things a lot better, definitely sent my eating cattywompus, as the deprivation feelings from cutting out ordinary bread and pasta have been enormous. But after lots of experimentation, I have found a range of substitutes which although not quite the same, they're close. Unbelievably I haven't got around to making my own bread, despite getting a bread maker last Christmas, so that's something I want to try soon.

I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'd hoped that a magical side-effect of cutting out wheat would be painless and steady weight loss. It wasn't. Instead, it's had the rather unfortunate effect of making me binge on the junky foodstuffs I could eat, like sweets, chocolate and crisps (chips)! However, my weight hasn't increased either, so I'll take that as a positive sign. I'm ready to put some normal, sane structure to my eating now. No S is the sanest structure I know, so here I am...

Day 1 today - which happens to be a S day of course - though I will aim to stick to 3 plates anyway and only have other things if needed.

If you've read this far, thank you - and I look forward to sticking around here for a while and getting to know you.

Welcome (back)! No I don't think you're breaking any rules. Sometimes we just need to start fresh & that's okay.

I get hoping the side effect of doing something will be weight loss. I've wished that for just about every new thing I've done or tried be it moving house or having to take a new medication. Unfortunately the only way out is through but you can do it with the help of all this awesome support & the structure of NoS you can.

Best of luck,
Linda :)

Linda, thank you very much for stopping by. :) You're so right - the only way out is through, and goodness knows I've tried everything else with no lasting effects!

Day 2 today, and so far good and green!

Ah, pants, spoke - wrote - too soon. My N day has turned red.

Didn't enjoy my dinner, which had the unfortunate effect of making me search for something else to eat afterwards. Dairy free chocolate and gluten free cornflakes followed.

Not sure how to handle the consequences of disappointing meals. I know I should be grateful to have easy access to good food - and I am - but I was eating up leftovers before they went to waste and not choosing what I really wanted.

Never mind, this is a process, and maybe it's good that things have gone wrong this early on. I want to work through this stuff this time around.

So...
30/8/15 Green (S day)
31/8/15 Red (N day)

Oh no sorry! Yep sometimes we succeed other times we learn a lesson. So hard when you're just not satisfied w a meal esp since we just have the three! When it happens I just tell myself I can make the next meal extra satisfying and look forward to that.

Tomorrow will go better!

Linda :)
