I start a new job in the new year and have been spending a day a week at the new place. Today one of my new colleagues brought mince pies in for the office. I didn't really want one but it was such a nice gesture I didn't want to refuse.
It didn't derail me. I do think I'm over eating slightly at the moment though.

It certainly can but staying where I am was causing me stress and unhappiness. I've been working at the new place one day a week and whilst it has a lot more challenges the team are supportive and understand the issues.automatedeating wrote:Sounds exciting, but change can be stressful!

Congratulations on what sounds like a better atmosphere. Let’s hope the pies are a holiday thing.

You were certainly right to have the mince pie, I think. It was a pie of importance! Bonding with a new colleague. I’m sure Reinhardt would have had the pie.
If they offer more pies....well you can cross that bridge when you come to it...
Just don’t do what I’ve been doing, with one very kind ‘feeder’ friend. She gives me chocolate biscuits and I hide them in my handbag, then forget about them. This is very bad when combined with my other habit, keeping a bottle of water with a loose lid in my handbag. A while ago I found my keys encrusted in a sort of pastry.
Anyway, I’m delighted to hear about your new post, and wish you all the best! They are lucky to have you.

It's been a stressful few weeks in the run up towards Christmas, I have served my notice period at work, had a family meal where my 21 year old nephew announced his girlfriend is pregnant, not planned and my sister turned on me over something and nothing.
Whilst I was in the wrong for which I immediately apologised, her reaction was way over the top and very upsetting when I consider all I did this year to support her through her second divorce. She was determined to have a fight over it. Hey ho we live and learn.
My eating has had little structure but I'm not too worried but I think I'll make an effort for a nos day today.

Oh boy, I’m so sorry you’re having a stressful time. Sounds like your sister is trying to take out her frustrations on you. I hope she rethinks her reaction and appreciates all you e done for her. But if not make sure you take care of you.
Ps thanks for all your support on my thread & hope today goes well for you. 💜

I know this is Soprano's thread, but the Octavia "pastry key" story had me laugh out loud!
Ugh about the sister stuff. It sounds like you, very wisely, understand that her reaction is all about her, really, and not about you.
My eating has been breaking records this week and I'm sort of stumbling my way back to structure myself today - here's to both of us finding moderation today and tomorrow.

Thanks for the support ladies, it is really appreciated
I didn't quite manage a full nos day but ate significantly less and I was hungry when I did eat.
I skipped breakfast as I wasn't hungry.
My son bought me lunch whilst we were shopping and as a treat included a cake without asking so I ate half out of politeness.
As dinner was going to be late the family had something to eat at 4 but again as I wasn't hungry I abstained. When we did eat it was buffet style and I was relaxed about the plate but no sweet stuff
Let's try again today

Sounds like you’ve had a good day, Soprano. I too have managed to be moderate today. It’s time, isn’t it? The N days call. And yet, we approach the weekend. A little challenge for us all. I’m hoping to do without sweets and snacks - for once I don’t need to release of the weekend. But we shall see.
Sorry to hear about your sister getting on to you like that. So upsetting.
Btw, I have a new handbag...

Happy New Nos year everyone and thanks for your support last year.
I'm not sure I'm entirely back in the Nos groove yet and haven't stepped on the scales, I'll save that joy for Friday!
I started my new job which I'm sure I will love but am feeling very stressed and overwhelmed by all that needs doing. This is affecting my sleep but hopefully things will settle down.

I weighed today and from my lowest weight in November I've gained just under 2lbs. My scales weigh down to a 10th of a pound
I'm pleased with that as I did throw the nos rules out if the window for the latter half of December until after New year.
I ate more sweet stuff than normal but not in a binge like fashion. Most days were 2 or 3 meals of normal portions except Christmas dinner. But often 2 courses.
Back to normal now!

Still not got back to full nos and last weekend was a bit ott with sweet things. Managed another week of no alcohol Mon to Thursday so pleased with that. Weight today had stayed the same. Another win all things considered.
Quite a lot of stress with new job but I'm really enjoying it and I am managing my yoga twice a week.

1/2 lb off this week which was pleasing. Two yoga sessions and just one alcohol slip, had a hot chocolate one night and slipped a baileys in it.....
I did have a couple of sweet things as part of my meals this week. Not fully in nos habits but all under control and moderate.

Since my last post on 22nd Feb I've not really been fully in the nos groove. I've decided on 4 nos days a week for now but no alcohol to be part of it. That way I can enjoy a pre dinner drink with snacks on a Friday. Actually I used to have a relaxed Friday most of last year anyway.
I stuck to it well this week and was rewarded with a small loss. Not yet back at my nos lowest but only 1.5lbs off it.
This weekend will be a challenge as we are away for a wedding on Monday.
Have a good weekend everyone.

I lost a couple more pounds when I firmly started sticking to my alcohol limits. I'm not sure if it was simply the extra calories of wine, or if, as I've read, alcohol can sort of make the metabolism a bit stickier, probably by making the liver a bit off its game.
Anyway, good for you.

Good job Soprano!
I stopped drinking for a short time, and now I'm back to a drink here and there. It balanced out the entire lilikoi cake I ate pretty much myself over the course of our spring break vacation. I didn't gain overall, so it definitely helped. It's amazing how much it adds up.
Before the challenge, I'd have 1-2 drinks about 5 days a week. That's about a days worth of food in calories, so I'm happy I did it.

Whilst I'm here most days I haven't posted for a while. My weight is still up on my Nov nos low but is staying pretty consistent.
I finally bought a blood glucose monitor. Apart from a test reading mid afternoon when I bought it which was 5.1. I've been reading in the morning on waking. Interesting readings
Mon 5.9 but I did have dessert Sunday evening
Tues to Thurs consistent but slightly high 5.7
Today 5.9. tea last night was fish veg and mashed potatoes but as I was hungry at 9pm I had a small mug of hot chocolate!

Finally got back to the Drs to arrange my follow up diabetes blood test.
Interesting discussion, he said they don't recommend people buying their own glucose monitor. I wanted to know how long to wait after a meal to test your blood to assess the impact it had on blood sugar.
Any way my last result was 41 which is just below the prediabetic range so I'll be interested to see the results of the next one.

For goodness sake, what reason did the doctor give for not testing our own blood sugar?

Re: Soprano
I think he thought it unnecessary unless you were type 1
I suppose they are used to it being done to inform insulin and food requirements which isn't necessary in non diabetic or type 2.
Personally I think understanding the impact of dietary choices is a good thing.

Re: Soprano
Finally got the results of my blood test.
Liver and kidney functions are fine.
Glucose reading improved from 41 to 40. Apparently normal. Still high for my liking and I'd like to bring it into the 30s.
Cholesterol was high but pushed up by good cholesterol
Triglycerides were high but apparently as it wasn't a fasting test not necessarily anything to worry about.
Dr has agreed to retest in March but do a fasting test.
I need a plan!

Re: Soprano
Sounds like overall good results. Also, unless I'm missing something, sounds like you were proactive and pushed for the retest with the fasting lipid panel. Nice job there. Remember, I already didn't like your doc because he's not a fan of individuals testing their own blood sugar (haha I know I'm an annoying patient for sure!). Seriously, though, most docs just don't know this stuff yet. They are so busy they don't have time to keep up on the latest research, etc. They only know what the pharmaceutical reps show them. Ack! There are exceptions, of course. And if you asked your doc for a fasting insulin test - omg he'd probably say he doesn't even know how to run it. Another 10 years and they'll all be doing it. End rant. Thanks for putting up with me, Soprano!
Fasting blood tests definitely most important for looking at cholesterol ratios.
Probably the one I trust most to predict heart attack risk is Triglyceride: HDL ratio (which you'll need the fasting panel to do this).
Here's a little description from a fun website: https://www.thebloodcode.com/know-your- ... olesterol/
Your TG:HDL ratio is calculated on a fasting lipid profile. A calculator is here: Simply take the Triglyceride and divide by the HDL; the closer to one, the better. For example: TG = 120 mg/dL and HDL=40 mg/dL. 120 / 40 = 3.0, and indicates an elevated risk of heart attack and stroke. In fact, at 3:1 the likelihood of a heart attack goes way up!
Low TG:HDL is desirable. As long as the TG is not below 40, your ratio can be below 1:1, as it is in many well-trained and properly nourished athletes, for example a TG of 50 mg/dL and HDL of 80 mg/dL provides a low TG:HDL ratio of 0.6.
High TG:HDL, especially >3, indicates significant risk of heart attack and stroke. I realize that high cholesterol, especially LDL, gets most of the press, and this is due primarily to the interest in pharmaceutical industry interests hard-selling the cholesterol story. The research and relevance about the TG:HDL ratio is detailed further below if you like reading about research.

Re: Soprano
No need to thank me for putting up with you I value your opinion.
I saw a different Dr this time, a lady, very easy to chat with and the retest was actually her idea!
I think if I can lose some more weight that will help. Fortunately that has started to go down albeit slowly.
I think reducing alcohol will help the triglycerides, since moving we are socialising more. I also read high triglycerides can cause pancreatitis!
I'm going to switch to more wholegrains and reduce carbs a bit. I tried Atkins a few years ago and it didn't suit me but less carbs I'm sure will help.

Re: Soprano
The South Beach diet is a bit over restrictive for the long haul, and unfortunately IMO doesn’t offer enough guidance for weight maintenance. But I think the basic principles are excellent. Designed by a cardiologist, and a very healthy way to eat to get levels of things like triglycerides, blood sugar, and cholesterol down.

Re: Soprano
My weight has been pretty stable at around 3 or 4 pounds higher than this time last year, which considering it went up from Christmas onwards is quite pleasing.
Work is still stressful which doesn't help.
I still eat pretty much 3 meals a day but if I have a late breakfast, especially cooked one will then only eat again at tea.
I've missed the odd breakfast to do a 16 hour fast.
I am eating the odd chocolate or biscuit when I shouldn't and since moving we are socialising more which means more food and drink.
I have also been trying to reduce carbs in my meals especially refined ones.
With Christmas looming I'll be happy to see the new year in at my current weight.
If I can stick to max 3 meals without overeating at them this might be achievable

Very nice progress/maintenance, and goals!
Overall sounds like your new location (since moving) is working out nicely for the social aspects of life? That is so important - happy for you about this.

Re: Soprano
Time to take stock I think.
I committed to Nos in March 18 when I was, apart from pregnancy at my highest weight of 11st 3.2lbs. by the end of November 18 I was 10st 3.2lbs a stone off and it had felt relatively easy to achieve. I was disappointed in the beginning at how slow my weight came off to the extent I went to the Drs in June 18 who did a blood and thyroid test. All was well except my HbA1c test was 41 and the doctor suggested as it was quite high we retest in a year.
By November I was unhappy at work and finding it stressful so I left to start a new job in January which whilst more stressful I was happy in. However I had lost the Nos habits over the Christmas period and never fully got back on track. We then moved house in June and still wasn't fully back in the groove I delayed my blood retest because I hadn't registered at a new Drs but eventually went in Oct 19 the results were an improvement down to 40
Meanwhile my weight had been increasing, the highest was 10st 10.8lbs in Aug 19 but by mid December was 10st 5.8lbs.
I rarely get on the scales directly after holiday periods so am not sure where I am now but I don't want to waste another year not improving my health or eating habits.
I have anther blood test due end of March and really want to see improved figs again
So my plan for this year is to gradually introduce changes that will improve my health namely
1. Continuing to not eat in between meals but also to stop having tea and coffee with milk in between meals as this induces an insulin response.
2. To aim for a 12 hour period between my last meal or drink of the day until the next morning. I can quite easily not eat for a while but will miss that cup of tea with milk when I wake, though I can get round this by not having a late cuppa before bed!
3. To have 2 days where I have a 16 hour period between the last and first meal
4. To continue to eat as little processed food as possible
5. To reduce carbs in my diet, I already eat very little bread but need to look at alternatives for pasta potatoes and rice
6. To enjoy S days
7. Remember everything is ok in moderation
I'm setting Monday as the day to start which will also include a 3 week alcohol free period.
I'm not intending on working on it all at once but will have a couple of days deciding where to start
I've not been one for daily updates but might include some for a while to keep me focused
Wish me luck

I decided to start my 3 weeks without alcohol today! Success for day 1
Somebody in the Facebook group suggested using Google sheets to track green day's which is great. I used habitcal when I first started but not found it working well since the upgrade so rather than recording everything here I'm going to use that. Marking days green was a real motivator for me in the beginning.
Mentally I'm pretty geared up for this which is 90% of the battle
Just wondering whether to weigh or wait..

Re: Soprano
Good job on no alcohol! I really do love my wine, so it'd be hard for me to not have at least a glass or two 2-3 times a week. LOL, I'm not sure what that says about me.
Re: Soprano
Thanks Auto and ifly
Day 3 Another success re no alcohol and Green re Nos.
Achieving 12hrs fasted is difficult now I'm back at work but I did only drink water between bfast and lunch. By 2.30 I needed a mid afternoon cuppa
Auto I'm struggling to find that forum?
Work is really stressful still...

Sorry to hear that work continues to be quite stressful for you. I think the cuppa makes perfect sense!

Thanks Auto
I found you on the coach me site, happy herder looks adorable
Day 4 another success re no alcohol and another green Nos I just drank water between breakfast and lunch again.
Had a cup of tea tonight at 6 and will not have anymore for 12 hours!
Feeling positive re this, work was calmer today though I worked half a day at home which is always more relaxed and I get so much more done.
Full day in tomorrow but then hopefully from home again Thursday.
Thanks all for your support

Re: Soprano
Day 5 no alcohol hubby had a glass of red wine with tea but it wasn't too difficult to pass it up especially as I am popping out later in the car!
Green Day for Nos. 12 hour fast over night and planning 16 for tomorrow as I'm working from home.
Hoping to do yoga dvd in the morning, I did it on Sunday and can still feel some aches.
Drinking few cups of tea and getting hungrier, guess my glycogen stores are now lower.
Still feeling confident and positive about this and also eating reduced carbs.

Re: Soprano
Thanks auto, I just hopped on the scales and am only 0.2 higher than my mid December weight so feeling pretty happy with that.
2.5 hrs left of 16 hr fast. Fingers crossed
Yesterday one of my team members gave me a piece of her birthday cake. My heart sank when I saw it. My response was "How lovely thank you do you mind if I take it home and enjoy it after my dinner" Hubby had it, I wasn't even tempted

Day 6 no alcohol
Hubby had wine again!
Managed my 16hr fast and just had 2 meals today.
Tomorrow we are out with friends so not drinking will be a real test but since tomorrow marks a week that should help me desist!

Re: Soprano
10 days alcohol free, must admit my mind is much clearer
I was 15 mins short of a 16hr fast today, I was really hungry and it was a convenient time to eat at work.
Despite work still being stressful I'm coping well.

Re: Soprano
Well done! I have been on a pregnancy/nursing imposes alcohol ban for four years and found my mood massively improved (before it went back down from lack of sleep ). Do you find that?
15 is probably physiologically irrelevant as your body doesn’t have a clock.

Re: Soprano
Thanks Teammoney, I got my head around my moods a couple of years ago but I can easily see how it is affected by alcohol.
Lack of sleep is a killer but it will pass
I agree re the 25 mins it is easy to get hung up on things that don't really matter.

Re: Soprano
Well done! I know those days where I hang on by the skin of my teeth will come and anticipate them with dread as so far I’m still in the honeymoon phase and I am very inspired reading that it is possible.
