Greetings from a Grandma

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

Greetings from a Grandma

I'd heard about this concept (the No S and Shovelgloving) about a year before, but it didn't quite click. Well, we had a snowstorm up here in the Midwest, and that reminded me of shovelgloving -- more precisely, just how sore I would NOT have been if I'd been working out all along!

My spouse has a heart condition, and our son lives 2 cities away; so, even though I'm 54 years old, arthritic, and roly-poly, I was the one who had to do most of the shoveling. We don't have a snowblower. I got the driveway cleared out twice, but when the plow pushed knee-deep snirt into the throat of the driveway, there was no way I could clear it. Thankfully there were some young neighborhood guys with a snowblower who helped out.

I'm starting out slowly, just learning the movements with a broom and not worrying about time. I'll graduate to the lightest sledge hammer I can find. Next time it snows, I want to be in such good condition I'll be able to shovel it all out and won't even get a backache!

Since it's Lent, I thought it would be a good time to start No-S 'ing.

Welcome, Mary Rose!

Starting with a broom is great idea. The hardest parts are building the habit and not overdoing it. A broom is great for both of these.

Lent is a perfect time to try out no-s. Best wishes and looking forward to hearing more from you,

Reinhard

Good luck, Mary Rose. SG is great exercise, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
