Noel's Daily Check-In

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Noel's Daily Check-In

Post by NoelFigart » Tue Dec 11, 2007 12:31 am

Okay, my first perfect day since I got back.

No-S
Exercise
Glass Ceiling.

I've been perfect on the Glass Ceiling since I decided I would do it, and it's been less of an issue than I thought it would be. I think in part it was because I was willing to blow off exercise or eating to get the most serious issue under control.

I'm really strict about "Glass Ceiling", though. If I make a wine spritzer, I still use a wine GLASS and it's a weaker drink.

But I do keep it to two literal glasses, and don't fool around with substituting and figuring sizes. A wine spritzer in a wine glass is ONE drink, and so is an appletini in a normal sized cocktail glass. (Which is smaller than glasses sometimes are in martini bars, but we all know restaurant portions are out of whack anyway). If I drank beer, which I don't, it'd be a regular 12 oz beer.

I have a party coming up this weekend where I serve something I call Evil Grownup Cocoa. (A very thick, rich cocoa with Ice 101 peppermint schnapps). This drink... it's deadly and it's easy to get away from you because it's very sweet and Ice 101 is very strong. I serve them in 6 oz glass mugs and it's not unusual for me (and my guests) to get lit at this particular annual party. So much so that I'm actually hoping people are not going to notice that I'm not going to be getting drunk. (Fortunately Evil Grownup Cocoa and just the cocoa look the same, so no-one but me will have any idea at all how much I've had or not).

While I'm not worried I'll break the glass ceiling, I don't really want to explain why I'm not drinking my usual or to talk about it. I'm embarrassed I let it get away from me in the first place.

I'm also noticing that I need to eat bigger meals earlier in the day. I often don't eat what would be a whole plate of food for breakfast or lunch and then I'm starving by dinner and want to cheat. I'm trying to make my meals each roughly equal in size. I managed it today and I had no desire to snack.

I don't shovelglove or do the urban ranger thing cause I like to swim and lift weights. I did get my rear in the pool today. YA!

Happiness and bliss.

Though I've decided that I'm counting really sweet drinks as an S, so am limiting my appletinis or any really sweet liquor to S days. Wine is about as sweet as I choose to get on an N day, and a glass of wine with dinner is pleasant.

There's an ice storm tomorrow, so I'm unlikely to make it in to the gym. I have my shovelglove all ready for the morning. I like working out at the gym, what with having PAID for it and all, but it's not worth risking my neck over when I've got a good shovelglove all handy next to my bed.

It's been nice just to eat three meals a day and be comfortably full after each meal. I don't load up plates particularly, mind, but neither are they scanty. But I think this is a more satisfying way to eat than grazing, when it comes down to it.

I know a majority of my weight problem is from uncontrolled snacking and I'm hoping this time I'm going to break the habit for good.

Congrats on your progress!

Glad you're doing well - and just glad to see you back. I always enjoy your comments - they're generally both insightful and helpful. :)

I'm especially glad to hear you're doing well on the Glass Ceiling - that's a potentially serious one, as you recognized when you returned. You sound very focused and practical about it. Great that it's easier than you feared!

Best of luck.

I was too lazy to get to the gym, but I figure that shovelglove counts, so I did that the last two days.

Arms are sooorrrree.

I've been grumpy the last few days, but it's been nice to say, "Okay fine, you're cranky, but you're still racking up a good habit, so you can be happy about that if you choose to, right?"
