I didn't go through all the questions, but what about gum. It is either sugar or the other sweetners, so if we are chewers, is it okay to continue?
Is there a better solution?

The rules aren't "no sugar," they're "no sweets."
I often chew gum when I'm cooking dinner to keep me from snacking on it.
