Reliable Scale Descriptors?

Post by la_loser » Sun Jul 27, 2008 3:55 pm

About bathroom scales. . . I do get the part about not being addicted to weighing every day and all so no need to reiterate everyone's points about that. . . however, that being said, I do want to be able to keep an accurate record of my lost pounds. (Inches, I'm already doing.)

My scales should be dependable as in new battery, scales not that old, not particularly cheap scales. . . but the results fluctuate significantly even I step on and off of them several times in a morning just to test them. I've tried the "reset" strategy so that I put something much smaller on them or just step on them for a moment to get rid of my prior weight's memory on them. But I still get strange variations within even a few seconds.

I do remember reading somewhere on here that there are certain specs or descriptors to look for in a good reliable scale, but searching for that yielded over thirteen hundred posts since I guess it popped up every entry with the word scale in it! When I searched for "scales AND reliable" I got fewer results but not the info I was looking for.

So all I'm trying to learn is what is the characteristic I'm looking for in a scale that makes it more reliable?

I don't care about all the fancy extras like BMI, etc. I can figure that out in other ways--mostly with a tape measure!

By the way--Yes-I AM relying more on the waist measurement metric and how my clothes fit so no need to inundate this topic with why I should avoid the scales-I just want to buy a scale that is more reliable for the once weekly or monthly times I choose to use it!

Thanks for any info you might have!

Tanita scales are known to be quite accurate.
There are all different types and price ranges, and you can get them online.
I have a Tanita digital bathroom scale I purchased several years ago for around $40.
for the convenience of "digital".
For many months I tracked it together with my balance beam scales,
in order to check it's accuracy,
and both consistently weighed exactly the same.
