Daily Check In

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Pete,
How can a Sunday be a failure? Sunday is an S Day, and you can eat what you want!

Pete,

I'm hanging on by my fingernails with this diet, but what I see that is different about it is that you restrict food only on weekdays. Weekends are fundamentally different. By saying SUCCESS rather than S DAY for Saturday and Sunday, you aren't seeming to differentiate between a successful N Day and a do-what-you-want S Day.

Last week, I had four days of failure before one day of success and then two days of eating what I wanted. I could get through the N Day without sweets, seconds, or snacks because I had just a few hours to go before an S Day when I did not need to restrict.

Is it possible that your weekday failures are due to your weekend failure to let yourself eat what you want? The idea is that the N Days eventually become habits that alter weekend behavior even when you have no restrictions on eating.

Kathleen thanks for your feed back.
The problem is emotional eating due angry reactions to certain situations I had to deal with this week.
To be perfectly honest, food is used as comfort to fill this void caused by my resentment.
I know it has nothing to do with real hunger.
What I am doing now is starting not to engage this anger, but stepping back and observing my reactions to the situations.
My emotional reaction to these situations is the problem.
Being perfectly objective, the problems are quite small in reality.
What causes the real pain is the emotional resentment within me.

Pete,

I think there may be another explanation. Your S Days may not seem like days of "unconditional permisison to eat" (to quote a phrase from another book, Intuitive Eating). You are calling your Saturday a SUCCESS. Well, I could call my Saturday a SUCCESS as well, since it was an S Day. The fact is that I learned on my S Day that, if you eat moderately all week and then return to pre-No S Day eating, you'll actually get sick! I ate so much that my husband was embarassed that I stank up my sister in law and brother in law's cabin bathroom and had to pass on a boat ride because my body no longer could take the amount of eating that was typical for me two weeks ago.

I lifted this off another blog and think it is a great summation of the No S Diet: "Take care of the N Days, and the S Days take care of themselves."

Great! Just make sure S Days are S Days and not N Days.
