Ranthan's Daily Check In

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Ranthan's Daily Check In

Post by Ranthan » Wed Jan 06, 2010 2:29 pm

Day 1: SUCCESS. No seconds, no sweets, no snacks. Thought I was going to die last night, but believe it was all emotional snack withdrawal.

Well done :) Do you feel proud of yourself now for not giving in?

Thanks. :) I'm not quite at the proud-of-myself phase yet. But I'll get there.

Day 2: SUCCESS.

OK, now I'm kinda proud!

Played D&D with my friends last night... There were 4 large pizzas of varying degrees of deliciousness out.

SUCCESS!

Despite having the rest of the night to go back for seconds and thirds and fourths, I did it. Took two slices and a heap of salad at the start of the night and never went back!

Way to go, Ranthan! I think it's these "little" victories that add up to the big victory of real habit change.

FRIDAY, 01/08/10 = SUCCESS

Had a nice couple of reasonable S Days. Allowed myself real sugar in my weekend coffee--I thought I was going to pass out from the bliss. I've been afraid of using real sugar for so long.

I'm listing my official, "Starting Weight", today even though I've been on No S for a week now. Weighed myself this morning using my bedroom scale. Dressed but no belt or shoes. 216 lbs.

My bedroom scale sucks. But I can already tell that my weight has gone a little. I'll do weekly weigh-ins here.

Thanks to those that have replied with support.

MONDAY, JANUARY 11= SUCCESS

I did have one bite of honeydew melon outside of my meal. I was demonstrating to my 10 month old daughter that it was, indeed, food. She was skeptical.

But I'm not counting that. ;)

TUESDAY JANUARY 12 = SUCCESS

Had a big, naughty dinner, though. Fried Fish N Chips and a beer. Delicious going down... Felt bloated later on. Should have had the cob salad. But it's freezing in Boston and the hot fish was just awesome. I almost wanted to take it outside so I could eat the piping hot food in the icy cold wind.

Weird probably.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 14 = ER... SUCCESS?

Frell it, I'm calling it a success.

Here's the skinny though...

Breakfast... No problem.

Lunch... No problem.

Dinner... My wife talked me into making this soup. And she was home late from work and we have a ten month old. So making this soup took several hours. I sat down to eat at 9:30. Lunch was at 12. No snacks. BUT... I ate a few pieces of soup ingreedients (few slices of chourizo) and a piece of millet toast that my daughter refused to eat. I figure that could have fit in my bowl.

I don't want that to happen again. No snacks I can deal with when I sit down to meals at a normal time.

Weekend Report: Went pretty well. I was all excited about eating some ice cream that my wife had bought, but found I couldn't eat as much as I could the last time I had ice cream. I normally put three scoops in my bowl... I could only get two down and then I was... Satisfied. Weird. Anyway... Some light grazing while cooking, but otherwise no bad behaviors. Went out for my Dad's birthday and ate steak n veggies, but no dessert as he's diabetic and didn't want that crap on the table.

Got some walking in, even walking down to the hardware store to buy a sledgehammer to make a shovelglove. Might try to start that up next week.

Monday Morning Weigh-In: 214 lbs. BITCHES! That's down two pounds from last week! Checked fully clothed sans belt and shoes just like last week on the bedroom scale. Confirmed on the good scale in the basement.

8)

I feel good today.

FYI... Weight Goals.

I used to be obsessed with my BMI and what my, "ideal", weight was. I am tossing all that out. I don't care anymore. I'm going to lose weight until I stop--until it balances out and more or less feels right. So I have no set-in-stone goal. BUT... It's been a long time since I saw the southern side of 200. A. LONG. TIME. So if I can slide my way to 199 or less and hold there... That would feel pretty darned spectacular.

:D

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were all SUCCESSES!

Kept pushing off coming here, though.

Had another D&D night last night. Two slices of pizza and I was good. This might sound stupid, but that feels good. I was satisfied with two slices. I've never been satisfied with only two slices.

Thanks. :)

Friday was a SUCCESS! Now I just need to get my shovelglove up and running. four failures in a row. :D

Monday Morning Weigh-In: 212 lbs!

As per usual, that's clothed for work, sans belt and shoes.

Ack.

Wednesday was a SUCCESS.

Thursday I'm calling a FAILURE. Added some maple syrup to my oatmeal in the AM without thinking. And for dinner, I got Thai take out with a buddy of mine and I went back into my Crazy Noodles for a second helping, and picked up one more chicken wing.

Me is shamed.

Friday = FAILURE, I don't remember why.

No S Days went alright. No binging.

Monday Morning Weigh In: No Change. 212 lbs.

What does this mean?

Well, it means that either those two failures prevented me from losing more, or I've reached what my weight is going to be if I don't add exercise into my day.

So we buckle down and get back to form this week, and try to add in some walks and/or shovelglove.

Wednesday was a success... But I got sick halfway through the day. Home sick today. Eating only toast and juice trying to keep that down.

Okay... Thursday and Friday were both sick days. Nasty Stomach virus that both myself and my 11-month old daughter contracted, so an added couple of S-Days there. Didn't eat much besides toast and a little soup until Saturday, so this morning's weigh-in, while a good number, feels a little tainted.

But according to both scales in my house, clothed for work sans belt and shoes... 209 lbs!

Holy Cats... How could I... I somehow didn't check in all last week? Wha? I really thought I did.

All last week was fine, SUCCESS.

Gave myself an extra S day for Presidents' Day. Maybe I shouldn't have... My weigh in today was 211 lbs (+2). BUT... No stomach flu this time around. And just got through a very sweets/candy focused holiday. My wife made me a 3' Heart shaped Chocolate Chip Cookie. Delish.

So up a little weight, and somehow screwed up the daily check in. I'll have to be better this week.

Weighed in at 212 lbs this week.

Monday, March 8 was SUCCESS.

Let's get back to the daily updates, see if we can't keep going with this.
